949.0. "Custom T top - Help" by CADSYS::CADSYS::BROPHY () Thu Feb 13 1992 16:15

I need some help trying to find a source for a T top for a
21' center console boat. At this point it appears as though
I'm going to have to have one custom made. The folks at Gouche (sp)
Bros Marine in Shrewsbury have suggested a place call "Marine
Fabrication" somewhere in Rhode Island. They where not certain what
    town or a phone number.

The T top I would like would be made of approx 2" aluminum stock
have a radio box, rocket launchers, and a canvas top.

    So My questions are:

    1. Has anyone out there ever had a T top made for them? stock or custom?
if so who did the job?

    2. Are any of you familiar with "Marine Fabrication" somewhere in R.I?
pointer to town or phone number?

    3. Do you know of anyone else who may help in the search for the
       elusive T top?

    4. Anyone out there know of someone who does Aluminum welding who may
be able to help me out?

Any and all pointers will be greatly appriciated. Mr. Mod please feel
free to move if need be.

    Thanks
    Mike

I have some info from CMI, Hingham MA, 617-740-1260.
I don't know much about them, but they claim to build just
    about anything out of stainless.

I believe that Boats Inc in Niantic Ct has a custom shop.

re .2:

CMI has rebuilt a pulpit and done some other stainless steel work for
me. Very good work and not unreasonably expensive. I'd think that
stainless steel would be stronger, more durable, and need less
maintenance than aluminum.

I'm curious, what is a T-top? Is it similar to what is normally
called a radar arch? You know, the thing that most people don't
use for anything except a place to mount their stereo speakers?

949.6Just like the nameLEVERS::SWEETFri Feb 14 1992 13:4611

A T-top looks like a T from the side. Think of it as a hard bimini.
Very common on center consoles. You have a post come up each side
of the console and the top accross the two posts. A radar arch is
just an arch, the T-top either has a canvas top or fiberglass hard
top. I sure wish i could have afforded one of those $1500 arches
for my radar, instead I went with a $200 post.

I can't recall the name- but there is a place that does all kinds of
marine alum/stainless work in Warren R.I.- right next to the Blount
shipyard. Call blount shipyard in Warren- they can steer you in the
right direction- also if the boat show is intown- here will probaly be
    lots of places showing there.

    Mike,
Marine Fabrication... or whatever, will probably be at the N.E. Boat
Show next week. I've seen someone in that business there every time
    I've gone.

Bruce, thanks for the description of what a T-top is. I can
picture it now. I had visions of the old hardtop Century
with removable panels over the front seat, much like a Corvette
T-top. Couldn't imagine why you'd want one on a fishing boat!

I'd like to thank everyone for your help. Please keep 'em comming.

Here's what I've found out so far.

Starting price $1800.....ouch, I was figuring about 1/3 of this...

Starting price $1000 to $1200 I talked with Dick and he did seem to
be willing to talk more with me. I will be sending him some plans with
measurements, and a picture of the boat to get a better price. Thanks
     Bruce.

So for now I'll be drawing up some better plans, and trying to think
of other options that will provide me with some shade, allos for my
2 whip antenna's to be out of the way, and will not have straps
running all over the boat. As Paul suggested I will be attending
another boat show (I went to worceter and there wasn't much there)

     Thanks for all the help,
     Mike

Mike,

The fellow in Marlboro I mentioned to you yesterday is Herman Hudson.
Like I said, I think he is retired and just does this work out of
his garage/shop.

I'll bet that you could really cut the price way down if you would
purchase and cut the aluminium to size yourself. Just have Herman
weld it up into the specified configuration.

I haven't been there in a couple years, but here is the number I have
for him: 485-2356. His shop is near a xmas tree farm.

If you go the buy and cut yourself route, I would recommend picking up
an electric cut off saw to insure good angle cuts.

Another route, go to the plumbing counter section of Spag's and
to the left of the counter on the stairway are some aluminium fittings.
They are connectors that would enable you to build the T-top without
welding, since all the connectors use set screws to secure themselves
to the pipe. They are the same idea as what you have for the connectors
on the handrail of your Starcraft.

Once you build your tinkertoy T-top you could always have those connectors
heliarced to the aluminium pipe.
