746.0. "Checkmate infor wanted" by TROA01::DPURDIE () Wed Aug 29 1990 11:46

    I have heard the name Checkmate mentioned whenever I ask about
    fast boats. Can anyone tell me a little more about them? Anybody
    actaully have one and can comment on it?
    There is a 19 foot version with a 200 Hp for sale up here in
    Toronto for $10,500. Does this sound reasonable?
    If anyone actually has any leftover sales brochures or articles
    about this boat lying around I would really appreciate a copy.

746.1Price? Well I need more info to help you...FRAGIL::ZOGGWed Aug 29 1990 14:3017
    Hi,

    I read your note on the Checkmate boat and have a few questions. First
    of all what is the year of the boat, motor, trailer? Does it have a
    trailer? This info is helpful in helping you determine a price (US $).

    I have never owned a Checkmate but I've seen them around. The one you
    describe should be pretty fast depending on what pitch prop it has on
    it. I'd guess a 23 to 25 pitch. Is the prop Stainless steel or
    Aluminum?

    Is the hull in good shape? No chips, cracks, scrapes? Have you priced
    them at a local dealer?

    Check it out and reply. I'm sure that some one can help you out.

I don't know the year of either the boat or motor. It does come with
    a trailer though. I haven't actually enquired about it yet. I
    was hoping to get some more info about it first so that I can
    make a better estimate. The price was in CDN $'s.
746.3I have a small one but....OK4ME::OSTIGUYSecure it or SHARE itThu Aug 30 1990 10:4014
    I really know very little about boats but I do have a 12'
    CHECKMATE with a 35 HP Johnson and its fast.\

    I bought it second hand for about 1,600.00 US Dollars but
    it has stress cracks which are getting bigger.

    It is capable of pulling a water skier and does so every
    weekend.

    I am having trouble with the ignition switch (works sometimes)
    and the speedometer sensor is very loose and will have to be
    removed or the screw holes patched up and remounted.

    Good luck !               Lloyd

    What year is the boat? $10,500 canadian sounds reasonable if it not to
    old. But there are a lot of other factors.

    I am meeting a friend of my tonight from the Toronto plant, there is a
    Checkmate dealer in the next town down from me, If I have time I'll try
    to swing by and pick up some literature for you and send it back with
    him. His name is Gary Schabel and he also works in TRO.

                      I'll let you know tommorrow if I got it tonight.

    Having recently completed used boat shopping, I can comment on some
    used prices.

    I found and looked at 4 Checkmates;

    1986 18' bowrider, 190 I/O, real clean, trailer, $10,000
    1985 18' closed bow, 190 I/O, engine transplant, hard life,trlr, $8500
    1983 18' closed bow, 260 I/O, good but not great cond, trlr, $8500
    1988 18' closed bow, 260 I/O, super clean, trailer, $12,500.

    My wife's co-worker recently took me for a blast in his 1973 Checkmate
    16' with a 135 Merc outboard, super condition, he values the boat around
    $4000-4500 with trailer.

746.6Our Checkmate...AIMHI::SJOHNSONFri Aug 31 1990 15:0013
    We had an 86 20' Checkmate w/ an 87 150 Blackmax on it. We loved the
    boat and wanted to trade for bigger - but couldn't find what we were
    looking for so we settled for a BAJA (25' overall length) which we
    love!

    Our Checkmate is now selling for $12,500 (us dollars) up at Owens in
    Manchester, NH. It does 60 mph, is very well built (hand laid
    fiberglass), quality boat. I would recommend one in a second! The
    hull on our boat withstood some hard slamming on the big lake around
    here!

    Good luck,
    Sonia
