702.0. "METPAY won't cover 10-year-old boats" by KEEPER::THACKERAY () Mon Jul 02 1990 11:52

    I just heard some very disturbing news from my MRO1 METPAY rep. He just
    told me that MET are not insuring boats over 10 years old any more.
    When I arranged coverage overe the phone, four weeks ago, on an
    11-year-old boat, so I could cruise it from Hingham to Warren RI., they
    never told me that. I only just found out last Thrusday that they will
    not ratify the policy. Obviously they say they would have covered me, but
    if there had been a big problem, I just wonder.......

    Anyway, apart from being told this by the METPAY rep, I have seen
    noting in writing on this subject, but I thought I would warn you
    folks. I have no information on whether 10 year-old boats with existing
    policies are still covered.

    Insure it with Prudential. Metpay wanted twice what I pay to Pru for
    coverage.
702.2Try BOAT USMARINR::DARROWThe wind is music to my earsMon Jul 02 1990 17:4614
    Ray,

    For ease of doing business and reasonable rates, BOAT US has an 800 #
    and will issue a binder over the phone and you can charge it to you
    'BOAT US Master Card'.

    You can also go into thier Marine Center in Waltham and they will FAX
    your application in for you.

    Don't have 800# but Waltham is 617-899-2000.

    I forgot to mention that Prudential does not require that you have any
    other policies with them (homeowner's, etc.) in order for them to
    write a policy.

    As I understand it the reason that METPAY is not competitive is that
    they have only been writing boat policies for a few years and don't
    have the same base of premiums to rely on, as do other insurers.

    re: .2
    For me, US Boat was even higher than METPAY.

702.4I guess they have to over generalize, but not all 10+ boats are bad risks!JLGVS::GUNNERSONTue Jul 03 1990 13:307
My boat is over 10 years old. And how I know it! In any case I was insured with
them last year (they had the lowest rate that I could find in a hurry) and just
received the renewal form describing my coverage for the current year. So maybe
we can conclude that previous policies are being renewed, but new ones will not
be accepted.

702.5METPAY vs. Boats/USUSCTR1::FMACGILLIVRAMACGILLIVRAYMon Jul 09 1990 16:0217
    Metropolitan Insurance should not be in the marine insurance business.
    Their people are very inexperienced (had to ask me the difference
    between a sail boat and a power boat when I first went with them), have
    extemely high rates and wouldn't know the first thing to do in settling
    a claim. When I purchased my recent boat, they quoted me $1228 for an
    annual premium (with $300 deductable). I contacted Boats/US and they
    quoted me $580 (with a $500 deductable). In addition, I got $150 free
    towing coverage (which I later increased to $500 for a $25 premium).

    I had one claim with Boats/US last year when my outdrive struck a
    submerged log in Boston Harbor. The OMC dealer hauled the boat, made
    an estimate, called it into Boat/US and they approved it over the
    telephone. The OMC dealer stated that they understood the marine
    business, knew the part numbers (and costs) of what had to be repaired
    and had me back in the water in a week.

    Call them for a quote and compare them with Metropolitan!
702.6The Marlboro office knew what a boat was14752::GUNNERSONMon Jul 09 1990 17:085
    The METPAY claims adjuster who settled my claim was quite knowledgable.
    Too knowledgable for my benefit. But knew what he was doing none the
    less.

702.7Insure a boat, get a checkGOLF::WILSONWed Apr 08 1992 12:5110
    I received a pleasant surprise in the mail on Monday, a rebate check
    for $65 and some change from Metpay. The letter included with the
    check said that due to a better than average claim loss from Digital
    customers, they were rebating 48% of the premium which was paid. Of
    course, I immediately re-invested it in another $50 boat! 8^)

    I saw in the snowmobile conference that someone there received a 48%
    rebate on their sled insurance too. Anyone else get a check?

I recieved three rebates, one for each of my policies
(car, home, boat), which amounted to a little less than
$175. I'm not complaining....

    $187 on my house. Total surprise (a nice one for a change). Rick W.:
    did you say they won't insure a boat older than 10 years?

702.10GOLF::WILSONWed Apr 08 1992 15:406
    Wayne, nope I didn't say that. I put my reply in this base note
    because it covered Metpay. The original base note regarding 10
    year old boats was written by someone else back in 1990. I have
    no idea whether they'll cover a 10 year old boat or not.

       Wayne,

         NOT EVERYBODY will receive a rebate, NY residents wont be
    receiving a rebate, there are like 6 states that couldnt "meet the
    requirements". how they went about it I dont know but I have been in
    touch with metpay and all they said was they got a memo stating that
    the following states dont get rebates (i think 6 states in all dont).

         So if you live in one of the 6 states your pretty much SOL! The
    one drawback of NY state is the laws are so strict, but the boating and
    fishing cannot be beaten IMHO.

    I guess not everyone gets a rebate.From the bit I read of the letter
    that came with my check,the state of MA had fewer or less expensive
    claims than anticipated and therefore we were eligible.Maybe some of
    our bad drivers moved to NY during some of the purges around here
    and screwed up your numbers :-)

    Is *everyone* getting a rebate, or only those who didn't file a
    claim last year? Maybe if you filed a claim you don't get a
    rebate because you're considered a worse than average risk?

    Due to NH law, they cannot pay a "dividend" on NH auto insurance
    policies. Too bad. My home and boat dividends added up to $163! The 48%
    on the cars would have been about $600 alone. But not in NH. I'll take
    it, though, I's not bitchin'!
