OK, I'd be interested in the following-
For sure: Fenders, dock lines, a better anchor, an OS
supplies dry suit.
Maybe: Barefoot boom, trailer winch.
The maybe is dependent on whether I buy a new boat, should I
include THAT in the list ?

& Others...
Seriously. This is a super Idea! If we could form a club, a nonprofit
orginazation, and make purchaces in bulk on certain items, Huge
discounts could be had.
This could be a WIN-WIN situation for all its members.
I'm sure a lot of you may say" Yea, But how many people would we have
to have involved to make this work?"
Well lets find out! If your interested lets form a list of people.
I'd be willing to keep track of everybody and keep you all informed.
Jim? Lets make it work!

|
RE: .6 & .7
.6 in general i don't see the outboard as a problem, as for financing
i'll check into it with the vendor. (if you want) but responsibility
for it is yours. Need the brand and H.P of the outboard.
.7 I have checked with the moderators, we will be using this note
as a central repository for all replies. Consider yourself as
added.
Just one further note in general: I want to have all the lists with
the specifics, by JAN 15, 1990. This is usually a slow time for
these folks, any later and their off thinking about boat shows
and other things. Best to hit them in the lull, BETTER PRICES.
IN YOUR LISTS MAKE SURE I HAVE THE SPECIFICS, ONLY TAKES A FEW
MINUTES. IMAGINE FOR A MINUTE THAT YOUR ASKING ME TO GO OUT AND
BUY, WITHOUT HAVING TO CALL YOU FOR MORE DETAIL. DON'T MAKE THE
ASSUMPTION THAT I OR ANYONE ELSE WILL KNOW WHAT YOU WANT.

547.11 | What About This? | PACKER::GIBSON | DTN225-5193 | Thu Oct 26 1989 10:42 | 19 |
| Ok. I see a lot of Tangental Questions. Lets Start with the Idea of a
"BOATERS CLUB"
If we form a legitimate "Club" with a real charter, this would enable
us to purchace "Wholesale" from manufactures and vendors. It would also
give us social diversion as we could have a monthly meeting to dicuss
new Idea's on Boating places, equiptment and maintaince.
This would not limit us to only being able to purchace at a particular
time. It would be an ongoing function.
I'm sure that with the diversified knowledge of all potential members
that we could be of mutual assistance.
If this sparks your interest? Let me know. Maybe we can brainstorm
Ideas and come up with a draft???

| Walt,
Count me in. I like your idea. I don't have a list of "big" ticket
items off the top of my head (I think I bought them all last year),
but I like the idea of a "club" where we could order anytime or
at
specific times during the year.
besides "big" ticket items, I can think of a whole lot of everyday
items, oil, boat cleaners, grease, etc., etc.
Jim
PS thanks for the delivery. I try it Saturday!

| Your absolutely right Lou. "BIG BUY" I"d like to hit $20k or better,
its possible, i blew 3K last year, putting in what we wanted.
Please give me some specifics on items 1 & 2 you can always
come back and change it.
On my comment about Mass. and distance. I actually said i'm not
sure about those who are distant "from Mass." thinking here
that if someone wanted to participate, for example lived on
the West Coast, shipping costs might eat up some of their
savings.
As mentioned in the base note, i did this last year on a small
scale and it did work. This one has the makin's.

547.16 | Separate Notes. | TYCOBB::J_BORZUMATO | | Thu Oct 26 1989 12:38 | 25 |
|
I think we have some great ideas here. 2 basic schemes.
1. A large purchase of Marine Supplies, i.e. money talks,
and you know the rest. The deposit for this purchase
should go into our vendor(s) by mid feb.
2. A Boaters Club, for many reasons, too include on-going
purchases of Marine Supplies.
Without objection, i'll handle item 1. Walt Gibson has volunteered
to handle item 2.
Could we seperate the 2 into different base notes, for clarity's
sake.
I would like to use this note to gather the specifics, and the other
for comments, suggestions, critique of the Club, and its charter.

Jim,
Couple things...
I'd like to place an order for a trailer jack. (Do you need specific model?)
Also;
SKI tow line. (Pardon my ignorance) I think a neoprene line that
is adjustable in length? Is there such a beast?
SKI gloves (large)
Not sure what they call this but its a tow line bar which is mounted
inside the boat. (again, pardon my ignorance, I have always gotten
by with 'old style' "stuff" 8^) )
Will you have prices on this stuff? or is there something I can look at that you
have?
Also, I am interested in a power trim kit for an 85hp Force (1988)
(interested more in price and brand)
Thanks.. Roger_who_is_chomping_away_at_my_xmas_list 8^)

Zincs for an OMC Cobra drive, zincs for my tabs

Deck chairs with rod holders (run about $100 at bliss)
Many OMC tune up parts...

| RE: .19, .20, .21..
WELCOME ABOARD. First thing you need to do, is get a hold of some
Marine Supply catalogs. There are quite a few out
there, and get me a little detail.
example: .19 Trailer Jack, for what tngue weight.
.20 mooring cover, for what type of boat, and is it i/o
or outboard. On the second anchor, cahin and line
What brand of anchor and weight, length, size of line,
and what size chain, and vinyl coated or galvanized.
.21 16' alum outriggers, what brand, what type of finish.
i.e. anodized, painted black etc.
ALSO GIVE ME THE BEST PRICE YOU HAVE FOUND AT THIS TIME.
I will take the info you give me, combine all the like items,
i.e. sizes of line, group the sizes of fenders, group the bottom
paints and look to but in bulk. On line, we buy as many spools
as needed to make up the total, fenders we buy in bulk packs,
paint comes in cases, i'm not suggesting we all buy the same
paint, but if we were to buy the SAME BRAND of paint we'll do
better.
Keep in mind that i cannot compile a list of generalities,
so be as specific as you can. If you need more info, I'm
sure one of us can point you in the right direction.

| Having just upgraded to a larger boat with bigger 'rags' hanging from
the over sized antenna pole, I am SURE that I am going to need 'much
stuff'.
New boat had been moored mostly on a lake and the bottom had been
covered with an 'INTERLUX' epoxy product, 2002, I think. Since I will
be mooring in the Salem area, I will certainly need anti fouling bottom
paint and since its the first time and no personal experience to go on,
I would most likely be interested in going with the 'flow' and buying a
gallon of what the 'group' decides. Also, it would be helpful if
sometime (a month?) prior to the dead line if a list of the items
requested could be posted as a tickler for the rest of to use .
Also interested in fender covers, dock lines, 2 mooring penants, and if
the price is right, a knot meter and depth sounder. Details to follow.
(sp?).
Walt, add me to the 'club' list.
I am also intersted in pricing things like a dodger and adding a 'Ultra
Violet' stripe to the roller furling jib. Is it posible that any of the
BETTER Sail lofts and related suppliers would be interest in 'dealing'
with a group/club.

547.34 | Details... | ROGER::GAUDET | Ski Nautique | Wed Nov 01 1989 13:47 | 36 |
| I guess it's time to add details to my list. Expanding on .2, here's
what I've come up with so far:
- Swim platform (teak, polycarbonate, etc.)
Since my boat is a 16' with a 54" transom, the standard full
platform (18"W x 64"L x 2"H) made by Dolphin is too big. I
don't know if they make a smaller version of the full platform
for boats like mine. They *do* make a half-platform
(16"W x 22"L x 1-1/2"H), two of which would fit on my boat. The
half platform goes for $53.95 (Ski Limited price), including the
removable brackets. I need the brackets for the 102-degree
transom. Of course, I'd be interested in hearing about a full
platform that would fit my boat, in either polycarbonate or teak.
- Mooring cover (for inboard ski boat, 16'L x 70-3/4"W)
Heavy duty ski boat cover, 13-oz. cotton canvass, with drawstring
and tiedowns, plus reinforcements around windshield, tow pylon,
and other stress areas. Completely covers topside, and extends
4"-5" over rail. $184.95 from Overton's.
- Marine carpet
Blue & black marine carpet, approx. 50 square feet. No price
information.
- Trailer jack
Crank type with single wheel. Rack & pinion, $43.95. Standard
screw-type, $37.95. Both are Ski Limited prices.
- Dry suit
Large. Stay Dry Pro Edition Barefoot Drysuit, $259.95 from Ski
Limited.

I am definately planning the purchase of a Barefoot wetsuit (Probably
an Eagle Eliminator (179.95 from Ski-Limited or Barts or Barefoot

Kevlar non-stretch barefoot line (39.95 from Overtons') and possibly

Hopefully (but doubtful) a Barefoot Int'l "BOOM" (about 350. bucks)

| I'm interested in joining the group purchase too, but I haven't had
time to make a shopping list. I have a question: do we have the
option of backing out of the purchase if you do not meet or beat the
target price? What if a store offers some things at a great price in
return for a not-so-great price on a big ticket item?
|
547.39 | questions and answers. | TYCOBB::J_BORZUMATO | | Thu Nov 02 1989 09:45 | 42 |
| The game plan is to send out the list for BIDS. We'll know up
front what the costs are. If we like what we see then we'll get
out a deposit. You are not obligated in any way, until we
give them a deposit. I find it difficult you will find to beat the
prices we get get on a bid. The vendors are aware we have catalogs
(cause i tell them) and we done our homework.
My personal approach is this: if my list consists of 10 items
i'm looking at what the bottom line is. (i.e. the sum of the items)
and base my decision on that.
Also last year one vendor bid on the basis of "all or none" we could
not pick and chose the items we wanted. I called the vendor to inform
them that "they were not be considered, because of the stipulation".
Last year, we purchased goods from 2 vendors, we took the best prices
from the 2 and purchased accordingly.
Most people aren't aware of the fact, that the list we give them
actually works in their favor. They combine our order with theirs
or even another vendors order, and get stock for themselves at
a reduced price. Believe me when you understand what they do,
and you make them aware of it, all the B.S. goes away.
I have some very stiff conditions in the contract they will sign.
EX. 1. all materials are new and in the original packages, complete
with warranties. On larger items, a reciept must be issued
in the purchaser's name for warranty purposes.
2. we reserve the exclusive right "without question" to refuse
any materials at the time "we pick it up" this exclusion
will have no effect on the price of the item. I'm referring
to the vendor not having met his obligations. i.e. no owners
manual in the box, or missing parts, we will not pay for
or take delivery until all we are satisfied.
hope this answers your questions.
Jim.

looking for and lots of good advice to help you select the brands you
should consider. For example, there's a note (or notes) that discusses
beginner skiers and the equipment you should look for. Lots of good
pointers. You'll find that many of us here lean toward mail order
catalogs, but there are exceptions, like this note for volume purchase
via whatever the least expensive mechanism turns out to be, and there
are a few local shops that will match or beat any catalog price. It's
just finding them and checking if they have what you want in stock.
Welcome to BOATS!

| I was able to get a 30% discount on new and rebuilt props from
H&H this year when I used my Rod Building tax number. They almost
opened me an account but they I did not have enough credit references.
Based on this I am sure we could work something out with them with
the kind of volume we are talking. I guess I could sign up to follow
up the prop angle if you all agree to it. I am kinda leaning
towards buying a 15x17 stainless myself. If I do I will have
have a 15x17 aluminum that is like new to trade in (or sell to
someine in this conference).

.52 I have no problem with N. H., here's the only caveat, if the
outfit we do business with also has a outlet in Mass. and
a Mass. resident buys there we might have a problem. I know
its does apply to mail order, especially Boat U.S. they have
charged me sales tax, even tho the item came from their
headquarters. Maybe its different if we go to N.H. and
pick it up Could you make some calls around to some of the
Marine Suppliers and inquire if they would be interested
in a Large purchase.
.53 Seems you have a good handle on this prop repair, could
you check into it further, and get some estimates on
repairing those that have been listed so far. I'll
check on a source on this end.
From the activity we have to date, we're headed in the right
direction, KEEP IN MIND our goal is "TOTAL BOTTOM LINE PRICE"
This includes everything, sales tax as well....
If you have a particular supplier in mind, please enter it in this
note, i'll be sure to call them, and send them a copy of our
list.

| Re: .77
I am one of those that said sign me up and my list will follow. I have
bugun to consolidate a list and will be prioritizing it soon. I ended
up with a list that would cost about $5,000 more than I have to spend
on my boat. So, I am working to figuire out what items are most
essential (ie 300' of anchor rode vs a spot light).
Soooo, My list is in the mail!
Second point!
I mentioned an acquaintance at my boating course who was interested in
bidding on the list. His name is:
Calvin Moore
c/o Moore Lumber Co.
22 West Main St.
Ayer, Mass. 01436
I spoke with him last night and he is interested in supplying what ever
he might bid the best on!
I'll have my list soon!

I would have extreme reservations about placing an order with anyone who
was not a legitimate dealer. I would think considerations regarding
product quality, returnability, etc. are key to determining who would be
awarded the business.
Based on the number of replies I would presume that the dollar value of
this business is quite high. High enough to interest legitimate marine
suppliers.
Thoughts?

Roger, your concerns are valid. I have the same concerns. I just
havn't said it as yet. I need specific data, back several notes
there is a form someone suggested we use. I NEED THE DATA.
NO DATA, NO LISTS TO SEND OUT FOR BIDS.
On sending out a list to a vendor who specializes, i'd suggest
you poll the participants, and see if they agree on paying
a few more $$ to support a vendor. It maybe worhtwhile to
buy from him to keep him in your area.
I SET THE DEADLINE FOR DEC. 30, 89, FOR LIST SUBMITTAL.

547.82 | Some new H&H info | LEVERS::SWEET | Capt. Codfish...GW Fishing Team | Mon Nov 27 1989 12:45 | 15 |
| My first pass on props with H&H yields the following. Clubs or
large groups can get a 10% discount on new props and rebuilding.
They only offer the larger discounts to large commercial accounts
such as boat yards that gaurentee volumes. I am not sure how I ended
getting the 30% discount I got in the spring, they must have thought
my rod building would turn out to be a large volume business...
So bottom line is we can expect a 10% discount (forgot to ask if
MA tax would apply for new props or not) if we go to H&H.
Has any one done a tally on how many new props and how many rebuilds
we will have? These should be classifed as either Aluminum or Stainless
since the price is based on this.

547.94 | Questions??? | WJOUSM::MILLS | Intriguing | Tue Dec 26 1989 13:13 | 38 |
| Well I am still creating my shopping list. I stopped down at US Boat the
other night to check on model numbers and prices. I am impress by how
competitive their member prices are.
My boat is a 19' Stuery Center Console with dual in Hull fuel tanks. I
have a 140hp Evenrude on it. I will be ocean fishing and hopefully diving
with it. I think that covers required data for assessing these questions.
Anyway, I am looking for some help with some of the items I am looking for.
First: I need some fenders. I looked at AMCO's De-fenders 5"X19". These
are inflatable. Are inflatable fenders better than non-inflatable?
2nd: I need a new signaling kit. I liked the Sky Blazer aerial flares
because of their altitude. The kit I looked at was their Sigma Signal. I
couldn't find a model number, but the price wwas $42.95. Anyone know the
model to ensure I get the right one? Anyone have any other comments on
this item? It included Aerial, Hand held flares, smoke and Flag(2)? I think.
3rd: I want to replace/augment my fire extinguisher. I have taken the
CGAux Boating Course so I understand/am aware of the text book info. But,
what has been individual's experience? My boat is open. In a gust do any
work? Halon and CO2 are best in confined areas. Do they work at all in
the open? Is Dry chemical the best solution?
I tend to lean toward an extinguisher that can handle all three types of
fires. What do I sacrifice?
My current choice is the Fyre Fyghter 2A10BC Dry chemical model. Any
comments?
4th: What fuel line hose do people use? I found some precut in 10'
lengths. I haven't measured my requirements yet, but I don't think a 10'
section would be nearly enough. What brand is recommended?
5th: What is used for in line fuel/water filters? Are there significant
differences in brands?
When is the final deadline for summitting orders?

There's a rave write up of Marine Exchange in the s**l*ng
conference. Somebody said they'd matched or beaten all the defender
catalogue prices and had much more of the items in stock than
defender. FWIW; somewhere around Danvers or Peabody I think, though
from the notes they seem to have a store in Marblehead.

Well the Prop repair saga continues.... I spoke with
"Mrs's Martin" at H&H who abrasively informed me the only
Organized businesses can get discounts. She stated that H&H
was "protecting" the boat yards...
So unless one of us can qualify as an eligible business, then
I guess H&H is out of the question... any other suggestions?

105, on the Marine Exch. i've done business there before, they
will be on the list for sure.
106, we don't allow the use of Vulgarities in this notes file,
such as the "S" word, there are severe penalties for this.
I'm sure the moderator would support this. BTW hope you
feel better....................
107, on H&H, a friend of mine was up there last year, and
they had the balls to feed him the "zinc is short supply
and very hard to get" so they charged full list price
for them. He's new to larger boats and never had to buy
zincs before. If they're protecting the boat yards
their stupid, who's protecting them.

Should be no big deal. Spend 10 bucks, get a sales tax number.
Make up a letter head on one of your nearby laser printers, and
your an organized business - probably more organized than some
folks I have seen in the boat business.
BTW - Either deliver the gear in NH, or collect and dutifully
pay the Mass sales tax.

re props 'n such....
I have started some conversations with NAMP (North American
Marine Propeller, you wouldn't have guessed, right ?).
We *_MIGHT_* be able to get a "discount for employees of a
large company that has a big electronic network that spreads product
info like free advertizing, so we'd like yer business" deal. Also,
they may be able to help us with leveraging the repair shops - but of
course they don't want to hurt the retailers. The partners are going
to discuss it all.
I'll be getting stuff in the mail some time early next week,
will post then.

547.119 | My Apologies to Organizers, I did make some buys at Boston Boat Show
| RDF::GUNNERSON | | Wed Jan 31 1990 12:34 | 42 |
| I was asked by my Squadron (Minute Man) to represent USPS at the booth at the
Boston Boat show on Sunday, and I did. While I was there I had a little time to
walk around the floor. I couldn't take a lot of time, and like a dummy I forgot
to bring my catalogs with me for price comparison purposes, but it seemed to me
that a lot of "Boat Show Specials" weren't all that special. There were some
that did seem pretty good to me though. You've really got to know the prices for
the things you want before going in. The problem that comes up is when you
decide at the show that what you thought you wanted (and knew the prices of)
isn't what you really want or need and see something else that would be better,
offered at a special price. Since you haven't been considering that item there
is a good chance you don't know the prices for it and may end up paying more
than necessary.
In my case I was looking at inexpensive ($250-$320) Lorans in the boat catalogs.
At the show I found that I could get the Micrologic Voyager US1 Loran from the
Bliss Booth for $350. That seemed like an eceptionally good price, but I wasn't
sure since I had previously considered it too expensive and hadn't memorized the
prices on it. They showed me there latest catalog there where it was priced at
$420. When I got home the lowest price I could find was in the Outer Banks
catalog for $380. So, $350 Boat Show Price (not available at Bliss stores) for
the Voyager US1 by Micrologic seems to be a pretty good one.
On the other hand I was also looking for a digital depth sounder. I was looking
at the Standard DS20 ($170 catalogs). At the boat show it was priced at $150,
but I discovered that I really didn't like the the DS20 afterall and they showed
me the Humminbird HDR-400 bracket mount for $200 (I've seen $220 in catalogs).
Though it was more to my liking $200 was more than I could spend. Then they
suggested buying the Humminbird LCR-400 fishfinder instead, because they claimed
it provided the digital depth information I wanted, plus a graphic of the bottom
with indications of fish all for less money than either of the digital only
displays. $140 was the price. Based on their other good prices I thought that
that was probably a good price. It was, but wasn't as low as Overton's ($130),
and was no less than Outer Banks anytime, as I found out when I got home. You
see, I hadn't been considering a fishfinder, but here it was being offered as a
plausible alterntive to a digital depth finder, and I really didn't know much
about them, including prices.
So, you've got to know your prices going in, and you've got to be careful. And I
would take a catalog or two with me just in case you find yourself going down
another path.

Yeah, I'd like to take a couple - if they're
compatable/universal.
Mine is a Fram FCS1136M. With only a "few" hours on the boat
I havn't replaced it yet, but the book says to just drain out the
water from the bottom every{depends on your usage} hours. It looks
like a car/truck canister type oil filtre on the outside, but the
picture in the book suggests that it comes apart and the filtre
element inside is what gets replaced, i.e. it ain't a disposable unit.
This is on a PCM marinized ford 351.

There's a place on Rte 119, still in Littleton I think but
close to the Groton line. They cater mostly to radio hams and I'm
pretty sure they carry ICOM. The name is TELE-COM(M) maybe two Ms or
one, they might be worth approaching for a quantity deal on something
they rarely get a chance to sell.

Reg. I think you "missed the boat" The Concept is to buy direct from
the Manufactures or from their Distrubiters. The "Club" would be the
