448.0. "Mercruiser Parts and Prices, Shopping around saves?" by SMVDV1::JGUNNERSON (JLG) Tue Jul 25 1989 17:57

Can anyone tell me if it pays to shop around for tune-up type parts
(points/rotor/condensor/plugs, as well as cap, coil, and wires) for
Mercruiser? Or should I just go to the closest, most convenient place?
I called several shops listed as Mercruiser dealers and asked for the
cost of these items. Sure I was surprised at a $20 cap, but I expected
more difference in prices than I found. They were virtually the same
on their prices, which I image is Mercruiser "suggested" list price.

Boating catalogs (and stores like Bliss) don't seem to carry these
items (expect for plugs) and I don't know where to go to save money.
I'd like to tune up my boat for this Thrusday (system problems on my
end prevented me from getting this note in any earlier than now) before
my inlaws arrive, so I can't really order from a catalog, but can reach
any store between Waltham and Worcester and Woburn to Cape Cod if
anyone has any advice.

There's Dedham Sportsmen Center (Sea Ray dealer) on Rt. 1 in Dedham.
It is just off of Rt 128. They carry a good inventory of Mercruiser
parts. I don't think they're especially cheap but I doubt you'll find
a discount Mercruiser parts dealer.

Directions (from Waltham): Rt. 128 South to Rt. 1 North. As soon as
you get onto Rt. 1 North you'll come to a set of lights with a Showcase
Cinema on the right. Dedham Sportsmen is through the lights and next
door to the cinema.

448.2NAPA for (usually) one stop parts shopping.ULTRA::BURGESSWed Jul 26 1989 13:2712
re .0
Its been covered elsewhere, but....

Auto parts houses usually have most of what you need. Be sure
to tell them that its for a marine application when shopping for such
things as head gaskets, water pumps, etc. See other notes re
explosion proofed starters and alternaters - and the fact that SOME
marine engines turn the opposite direction to their automotive
cousins.

Re. Its been covered elsewhere, but....

I did try all sorts of directory searches for such a general topic, but
couldn't find one. From what I remembered about the discussions on use
of automotive parts I thought that the general concensus seemed to be
not to. However your point is that NAPA would have some of the parts I
am looking for, in marine quality. Do you know if they have "meets
(marine) standard __________" label on them. Just to feel sure about
it. Taking some kid's word for it doesn't make me feel safe.

BTW - the points for my engine (1977 Model 888, 188 Hp Mercruiser) were
$20.75! Now you know what I ask. When I questioned the dealer he showed
me "the book". Print a book and you are lincensed to commit robbery -
editorial comment. His comment was that the points were very expensive,
much more than newer engines. Supply/demand/manufacturing volume were
also cited. The condenser was only $5.25, but two dealers didn't have
any and the one I got it from had only one, and had it since Aug 1986.

From what I can tell all Mercruiser dealers charge whatever the
Mercriuser parts book lists as *the price*. I was thinking that some
dealers (the ones at the "luxury" marinas) may charge full list, while
80% of the others charge a slightly lower "suggested list", not really
a discount, but "normal price". I don't think that that is the case
though. It seems that if you want Mercruiser branded parts you might
as well get them were it is most convenient.

448.4NAPA can save you $$$$$ATSE::URBANFri Jul 28 1989 11:0014
From what I know about it, there are certain parts on a marine engine
that differ significantly from thier automotive equivilent. But, there
are alot of parts that do not. Good automotive supply houses have
catalogs for marine applications of common engine parts.

I just bought new points for my Mercurser at my local NAPA dealer for
$6.00. They also have the rest of the ignition parts including coils
available at far less than marina prices.

There are times where you are just going to have to take the hit and
pay the full fare, but if you have the time, or if it's not too exotic,
there are alot of aftermarket sources and rebuilders around where you
can get a better deal.

I tend to collect catalogs. Sears Marine Accessories catalog has
a bunch of parts for many motors. They are Sierra parts, but Sears
prices are list. Ward Marine in Winthrop Ma. also carries Sierra
parts.
Doug Russell's in Worcester claims up to %50 off all parts for Merc
and OMC.
Middlesex Marine has a big selection of parts, at least I've had
good luck with them. Their in Tyngsboro Ma. But they are clost to
list price.

I usually go to the NAPA parts place in Maynard Mass., (most
of) the folks that work there are quite knowledgeable, but you need to
know something about the engine you are parts shopping for, i.e. you
may have to do a little translation from marine terms to automotive
terms. Asking for a head gasket to fit a '79 Stingray will probably
get blank stares, but if you can tell them that it has a (4, 6 or 8
cylinder) chevvy block of displacement xyz cubic inches and that it is
in a *_BOAT_* then they can probably come up with exactly what you
need (in this case stainless steel instead of fibre, most likely) at
the right price. Similarly for points and condensors (capacitors, if
you insist); although these have have mostly been replaced by
electronic ignition systems in cars they will still be listed for
marine engines.

448.12Mercruiser Parts?????BABAGI::TURBAYNEMon Oct 30 1995 13:1415
Where's the best place to obtain Mercruiser parts?????? I have a
1985 SeaRay 270 with a 330HP TR package. I want to replace my
transmission cooler and oil cooler. Reason being; too many friends have
had these fail in boats of about the same vintage. Basically a small
hole developed between the water jacket and the oil or transmission
fluid portion of the cooler. The resultant does a nnumber on your
transmission requiring several flush outs to get rid of the water. I'm
into P.M., so I want to replace them both before next season. Slip's
Capeway Marine quoted be $120 for the 9" oil cooler and $150 for the
5" transmission cooler (of course the smaller one costs more). I'm
wondering if anybody out there found a cheaper source for Mercruiser
parts or maybe after market coolers???????

448.13Overton's again... BTW: Order me an Airguide Pitot tube, will ya?KAHALA::SUTERand now for something you'll really like!Mon Oct 30 1995 14:0912

Steve,

The Overton's catalog I have on my desk doesn't specifically
list any tranny coolers, but it's not the complete parts catalog either..
I'd give 'em a buzz at 1-800-334-6541 cuz they do list parts like manifolds
and such...

Let us know what they say..,..

Mercruiser parts..........

Last fall I added a note looking for a good source for Mercruiser
transmission coolers/oil coolers. Somebody responded with an outfit
in either North Carolina or South Carolina. Bottom line, I can't find
the origional note and can't find the address/phone number of the
place down south that I was refered to. Can anybody help?

BTW....I did call those folks back when.......They definitely have
much better prices even with shipping tacked on then anything I have
found up here. Example: local Mercruiser dealer wanted $169. The
place down south wanted $70........both were Mercruiser parts

Another source is Ward Marine in Winthrop (call information for the
number).

Last summer I blew the top end of my Mercruser Alpha 1 drive. They were
about $2 more than Basic Power Industries.

I placed my order on Monday AM, and the parts arived at my house
(Salem NH) on Tuesday.

If memory serves my right, the whole order was cheeper from Ward, than
from Basic Power Industries. (I ordered extra gasket sets, and
water pump impellers also).
