406.0. "Boston Harbor Advice Needed" by CURIE::THACKERAY (Ray Thackeray MR03 DTN 297-5622) Tue Jun 13 1989 15:47

Is anyone going to be cruising Boston Harbour or the Charles River
on Monday evening 3rd July, or during the day on 4th July?

I'm going to be in the area then (on an extended cruise for the
week) and would love to meet up with other boaters.

Also, could use some advice on where to anchor, etc. Or is it better
to rent a slip for the day/night? Any advice could come in useful.
I only have a small inflatable and don't want to row far, but would
like to be able to gain access to the nightlife in Boston, and get
back to sleep on the boat, which is a small Bayliner cabin cruiser.

    Anchors aweigh!

406.1Be There for Constitution Turn-aroundCURIE::FSMITHTue Jun 13 1989 20:2410
I plan to be in the area over the 4 day weekend. I will be at the
turning of the Constitution on July 4 at noon. We went last year
and if you are in the area, it's worth seeing. I would suggest a
slip. I am in Hingham (Hewitt's Cove) and it is a short run from
there to anything in Boston Harbor (Islands, Constitution, etc.).
The boat is 'LIBERTY', a 31' Blue Seas. Give me a call on 16 or
    call me at DTN: 297-3522.

I understand that there are slips available at Rowes Wharf.
You can get them on Channel 16 or you may prefer to call them for
    a reservation that week end.

I am also at Hewit's Cove Marina (Slip F-17). You might consider
calling them for a slip over the July 4th week end. They should
have some available because many of their regulars go off for that
week end. Like Fred mentioned, it is only a short run into Boston
from there and you would get an opportunity to see some of the islands
on the south shore. You can also purchase gas at Hewits Cove Marina
    or at Turn Harbor Marine.

THE CONSITUTION MARINA WILL COST YOU $5.50 PER FOOT PLUS A $5.00
DEPOSIT ON A KEY. IT'S LOCATED JUST BEFORE YOU ENTER THE CHARLES
RIVER. A SHORT WALK TO BOSTON'S NORTH END, WHERE YOU CAN TAKE THE
"T" ANYWHERE. IF YOU DECIDE TO STAY THERE, I'M ON DOCK "D". SAIL
    BOAT PASSE-PARTOUT.

With the stiff breezes of June, many a boater was happy to pay this
price. Supply and demand has put downtown slippage very expensive.
    But I agree, It's a rip off !

$5.50 for a 23' boat works out at about $230. I can get a mooring
all year for that in Narragansett Bay!!!!!!! Can't believe it.

    Even for a week, it's a rip-off.

I don't understand you people. Why is it a rip off?
Isn't the same thing by having our hamburger at McDonald's and
they(the ones that can afford it)have it at the Ritz.Of course
this is a dump example because I don't believe they go for plain
burger.Seriously, it is getting frightening what is going to happen
with the places we rarely can afford now.Maybe I buy heavier anchors
    and longer rodes.
406.8MSCSSE::BERENSAlan BerensThu Jun 15 1989 13:1315
There is a difference between a fair price for something and price
gouging. I believe that the rate at Constitution Marina is about $100
per foot for the summer. That's about $0.56 per foot per day for a 180
day season. If the slip renter is away, the marina rents his/her slip by
the day and gives none of the income to the long-term renter (or so I am
told by a friend with a slip at Constitution). I have been delighted to
see newspaper ads for vacant slips at Constitution Marina. The owners
(who are leasing publicly owned land) have apparently gotten too greedy.
By the way, the state refused to renew the marina's lease until the
owners agreed to make substantial improvements. It is this sort of price
gouging that makes me support public ownership of all waterfront
facilities (marinas, etc) with availability on a first come, first
served basis. (Oops, wrong Notesfile.) But look on this as an investment
opportunity -- buy stock in companies making ground tackle and mooring
equipment. Their profits are bound to go up!
406.9bad memoryWAV14::PARSHLEYThu Jun 15 1989 14:096
I'm sorry for leading you all down the error path. Last time I pulled
into Consitution, with a 37 footer, I paid 55.50 which comes out
to be $1.50 a foot not the $5.50. Simple memory error. So, the 23
footer would be $34.50 a night plus the returnable deposit for the
key. The slip has Water, Lights, Electric and ice for a buck a bag.
This pricing is more in line with other Marinas.
406.10gotta stop gouging.TYCOBB::J_BORZUMATOMon Jun 19 1989 15:0215
$1.50 per foot ain't that great but better than the previously
quoted price. Oak Bluffs has gone to $2 per foot, and now i undestand
that there is no use of grills at all. Friends of mine were
out there several weeks ago. They claim folks were leaving after
they found out what the new rate was, can't say as i blame
them, in my opinion its not at all a place i would like to
visit. As for rates in general there all about 25-35% to high,
the greed is on the run, but i believe there is going to be
a short coming, as these prices rise, there are fewer
people willing to pay for them, note i said willing, most
people prescribe the "good value for the money". i'm not
saying that they are not entitled to a profit, but gouging
    cannot be allowed.

This last weekend my friend was in Boston Harbor and he
paid $ 2.00 per foot. The mooring was beyond Rowe's Wharf
...took a little narrow street right before a 7-11 store
(not your usual 7-11 store, much nicer looking). The Wharf
I believe was called COMMERCIAL Wharf.

That's a fact...next week rates could be higher.

ps. $ 8.00 to park a car overnight.

Note 999.0 Mooring in the ocean (Boston area)??? No replies
AIMHI::SJOHNSON                                      12 lines  25-JUN-1992 13:19

We're planning on doing the 4th of July fireworks by boat this year.
We were wondering if there is any place that we can moar our boat in
the ocean that would be safe & legal in the Boston area. We have a 25'
BAJA speed boat. My husband seems to think we can just moar anywhere
in the ocean. I'm thinking we should avoid the water on the 4th of
    July altogether.

    Any suggestions???
    Thanks in advance,
    Sonia

406.14Harbor not a great view of FireworksROCK::SMITHThu Jun 25 1992 16:1826

    Sonia,

If you actually want to see the fireworks on the 4th
then you do not want to be in the Harbor, you need
to be down the river past the lock. At least from
my experience which has been two harbor cruises on large
cruise ships (ie: 250+ people). You can see some
of the fireworks but they are a good distance away and
many are blocked by the Boston skyline.

I do not know what it takes to get farther down the river
but that tends to be a real zoo as well. From the people
I know who have taken their boats there for the 4th about
half thought it was a big mistake and half had a good time.
I personnly would be far to worried about people bumping
into my boat and constantly being at the controls to hold
position and avoid other crazy drunks to enjoy myself.

Maybe others have more first hand experience about the
river, but the harbor is not the best place to see the
fireworks. It is still a good time in the Harbor as
long as you set your expectations about seeing the show
    properly.

Yearly I take my boat to the fireworks in the megagapolis of
Boothbay Harbor Maine, which in terms of crowd must be 100 times
smaller than Boston and even then I'm never sure that I had a
good time (my guests are, so if you don't mind playing captain...).

Too many boats, in the dark, all letting out ground tackle in close
proximity to one another. No so bad on arrival since it's still
light out, but afterward everyone hauls anchor together and takes off.

Night boating has enough challenges without dealing with crowds.

But still I do it... I think maybe this year I'll think about
trying to hang around a while until after it's over to let things clear
    a bit. That might help.

I understand during the parade of great ships the coast guard and the
Harbor Master will only allow pre reg. boast anchor along the parade
route.Check the Boston Coast Guard cmd.He the phone book.

Just a scribble from us in the Nations Capitol.

The 4th is allways a BIG party here on the Potomac River on the 4th P.M. One
can catch the fireworks on the Washington Monument grounds from the comfort of
one's boat. A good time....

Once its all over, picture 1000 runabouts, yachts, offshore racing types, etc.
going downriver @ once @ varying velocities... Is your insurance payed up???

Year before last there was a ~12' sail boat, no lights, except a flashlight,
tacking across the channel as the mass exodus went down the channel!!!!!!!!!!!!
It was cool though, he had the right of way!!!!!!!

Actually, a lot of the more sensable skippers hang around for an hour or 2 and
then cruise home @ a reasonable clip.

viewing & knows what the rules are of the harbor. My husband is
planning on putting our boat in tomorrow morning somewhere in Lynn &
driving in as far as he can to view the Tall Ships. Are time limits
being applied for the exiting parade planned for tomorrow? Can you get
anywhere near the boats? Is it worth the hassle of trailering from NH,

re:.31
Sonia,
I was anchored out on Specticle Island Green Can 3A and saw them
come in 10-July....AWESOME. Afterwards we were allowed to enter
the Harbour to view them at anchorage. It was "CROWDED" but
well worth the "nervous" excitment it caused. I had to go in because
I launced in Watertown on the Charles River and went through the
Charlesgate locks which are near the berth for the Constitution.

I have a map from the CG that identifies the anchorage positions
the following info may be of some help as to restrictions in Harbour.
Just enter the harbour from Deer Island and look for all the boats
at anchor. Pick one with boats same size as yours and you should
be fine. The CG have put plactic bottles (prestone etc) with numbers
to mark the boundaries. Watch out for lobster pot markers in areas.
Hope this helps
