367.0. "COLUMBIA Brand?" by DZIGN::SCALA () Mon May 08 1989 18:11

Has anyone had any experience with the "Columbia" brand of boat? Its
    a fiberglass sportfisherman built on Long Island ( so says the
    current owner). The company builds boats in the 30 foot class
    and based on the number of used ones around, very FEW.

    Any help would be appreciated.

COME ON JOE---Are you sure that somebody is not taking you for
a ride on a Columbia bicycle?
You must have to peddle real fsat to keep up with the tuna.

367.2Norm, You peddle; I'll drive!DZIGN::SCALAWed May 10 1989 10:1533

Here's the deal.

Its a 33 foot "Columbia" sportfisherman built in 1981, somewhere on Long Island.
Solid fiberglas, full bridge, Murry chair, outriggers, bait freezer...
Used as a charter boat. You get the picture.

The guy is a two boat owner and desperate to sell. He has had it
on the market for almost a year and will listen to offers.

Here is the catch.

The engine is a 375hp 3208 Cat-TA diesel installed in 1988.

But even with this engine it only cruises at 15 knots. Either its a real heavy
boat, or has the wrong prop or the design is flawed and it will never go
any faster than that.

The boat is in N.Y., so before I go on a wild goose chase I am trying to
find someone who has been on one of these or is in the area where they
are built.

Norm, my current boat is an Eastporter made by Passamaquaddy (sp?) Yacht
Company in Maine. Passamaquaddy is also the name of a company that makes
boat shoes! So why not buy a boat made by a company that has the same
name as a bike manufacturer! Makes sense to me. Want to take a ride to Long
Island? If we decide to bring the boat back with us, I'll drive and you
can peddle.

There was a sailboat builder named Columbia. They went under a number of
years ago.

Joe,
If the price is right she may be worh going down to see (or sea).
I really have seen a lot of "off" brand name boats that were
super. The speed sound about right to me as the tuna boat that
caught 11 last year (yes 11 GIANTS) is 35 feet custom built and
has a 3208. She runs at top end of 17 knots. It seems that speed
and comfort (meaning real sea-worthy) don't come in the same
package.
Remember I am available anytime for the delivery run.
GO FOR IT JOE.

367.5Don't know if it was a Columbia but...VICKI::DODIERWed May 10 1989 16:076
    	I know of someone that had a boat in that size range and it
    had what he called a wine glass hull. It was more of a displacement
    type hull than a planing hull. Very seaworthy but also not very
    fast considering the big cat diesal engine it had.

367.6Listed in the fisherman?LEVERS::SWEETCapt. Codfish...GW Fishing TeamFri May 12 1989 12:253
    Was this boat in the fisherman for a long time??

    If by fisherman, you mean the National Fisherman, then the answer
    is yes. It was in there with a broker. Now he is trying to sell it
    on his own.

    Do you know someting about it that I should know?

    He sent me a few pictures and a list of equipment. It is a good
    looking boat with an unbelievable list of equipment; from a bait
    freezer to a full galley. It even has a hard top bridge that is insulated!

    My guess is that he put the big Cat in hoping to get more speed out of
    it, but it didn't work. He runs charters out of N.Y. and speed has
    become important in that business. 15K cruise is slow but I could
    live with it. This boat is so well equiped, getting there would
    be half the fun compared to what I have today.
