135.0. "looking for a boat" by PENUTS::CPERSON () Fri Aug 26 1988 09:13

Hi,

I need some advice on a boat. I am in the market for one but really
do not know to much about them. I am looking for a 15-17 footer.
The engine is between 70-90 hp. Actually I will save money if I
used. How much does something like this cost. I love to fish and
this is one of my reason for buying it. My wife wants to get the
sun on it. Any help would be great. Were can I look for a boat
with a good deal. I dont want to spend a fortune just being married
and all. Well thanks in advance.

    You need to say more...
Fresh water/ saltwater, sheltered/ open water?
Passenger load? Six adults/ two adults & crumb crushers
    Waterskiing? Big people/ little kids?
    What kind of fishing?"
Are you going to spend the whole day on it or just take trips
    from a shore and return?
    Price range?

I paid $3700.00 for my used one in 1985 from a private guy who happened
to be buying used boats from people. He fixes up boats, swaps the
motor sometimes and then sell the boats w/motor. He still does today.

Three years later, the motor went bad. Lower unit was shot.
So, I traded it in at a Merc dealer for $400 bucks (YUP!) and a
    used 1982 80Hp Merc o/b. Runs good.

Today, if I were to sell, I would probably ask $5,000 for the
    boat/motor and trailer. 16 footer,tri-hull, holds 7 people, and
has 80Hp Merc. Plus a boat trailer.

Helpful hint: if you have kids, take them with you when you shop.
The guy I bought my boat from, saw my 2 pre-school daughters with me.
I told him I thought his price ($4,000) was too high for the used
boat/motor/trailer. When I started to walk away the girls looked back
at him with tears in their eyes. Then he hollered at me and said,
"Hey, wait a minute.. Let me see if I can bring the costs down!"

We made the deal...$3,700. Within 3 days I got a loan and a check
to pay the guy. Later that day, I took the family out on Lake
Champlain, went fishing, and the girls caught their first perch and
    bass in their whole life!...

    Good luck boat hunting!

    CP,

Sounds like I have the boat for you. I have just purchase a new
boat and I'm look to a home for the old one. See the following and
    see what you think.

    1983 Thundercraft Tri-hull 16ft.
1982 Evinrude 70HP Outboard (new motor)
    1983 Cox trailer
    Full covers

I have used the boat only in fresh water since 1984, used in ocean
in 1983 about 6 times. Good ski boat, good fishing boat (I do both)
and hold six adults. If you are still looking, give me a call.
    223-2327.
