76.0. "disks" by EAGLE1::EGGERS (Tom, 293-5358, Soaring ever higher) Fri Jul 15 1988 01:08

I didn't see anything on "disk" riding either. A disk is about 36 to 42
inches in diameter. It is not tied to the tow line: you stand on it
while holding onto the tow line. Foot friction and backward lean pulls
it through the water. Ten mph is a good speed, maybe a bit high. Fairly
easy to learn, so even raw beginners can do something. And EVERYBODY
falls, but at 10 mph, it's gentle.

    Things to do:

    1. Cross the wake	(Not as easy as you might expect.)

    2. 360 turns	(Easy.)

    3. Headstands	(Hard on the head.)

    4. Step ladders	(I've climbed up, but never down successfully.)

    5. Crack the whip	(Hard to complete one circle. You get
tripped by the wake after 270 degrees.)

    6. Submarine	(Move forward on the disk until the toes are near
the front edge. Slow the boat and CAREFULLY let
the front edge submerge. Be leaning forward or back,
you can make the disk dive or climb in the water.)

    7. All of the above with two people

Way back (1970), I remember my uncle would get on one of these
things....put a chair on it, and be towed around the lake reading
the Sunday paper. We all thought that was so "cool"!

They didn't have any of the toys we have now, like kneeboards,
ski bobs, skurfers, etc. Funny though, I can't picture my uncle
    on a kneeboard :)...

Well, your "way back" isn't my "way back".
I cut my disk out of marine plywood in 1956.
I still have and use it.

Hi gang, I'm looking for advice on placement of footstraps on a ski
    disk. The disk is homemade.

    Any ideas on:

-how far in front/behind of the diameter the centre of the foot
         should go?

-how far apart the feet should be?

Thanks - Ken (all fuelled up and rarin' to go)
76.4try a barstool dude...COMET::KLEINMMon Nov 25 1991 17:117
Are you sure that you need footstraps? What is your disk made out of
that makes it slippery? I put bindings on one once and didn't
    like it,not enough freedom.

I like standing on a barstool on my disk, you can do everything on the
stool that you can do just standing on the disk aftr a bit of practice.
I disk on a 42" plywood unit goin about 11 mph.
