274.0. "Details of CDDI ( copper distributed...)" by STKHLM::WEBJORN (Gullik Webjrn Product & Technology Group) Tue Jun 11 1991 08:16

    What does the FDDI 'thin_wire' connection look like, is it
    using 2 thinwire coaxes? Where is grounding done, at the
    concentrator? If so, how dou you handle a point-point link
    between 2 machines ( S_port - S_port )

    Same question as above for STP, connectors, etc. Are we using
    just 2 * (shielded PAIR) ? Are shields connected one end, or
    ( both,none )

    Is there some doc's available??

274.1Is CDDI an accepted acronym?FORTSC::TEMPLINWed Jun 19 1991 13:597
    I don't have any further information for .0, but I do have a further
    question. Is "CDDI" actually a commonly accepted acronym for "FDDI over
    copper"? I can't recall seeing this acronym used in any Digital
    publications, but I've spoken with customers who have used the term
    extensively. Thanks,

274.2A rose by any other name.....LEVERS::J_HILLMon Jun 24 1991 13:2914
    Hi;
         I've seen the term CDDI, as well as the term TPDDI which only
    confuses things, since there are many types of twisted pair, which are
    shielded and unshielded in various ways. The worst I've heard is
    someone saying, "Copper FDDI," what a horrible example of, "double
    speak." Unfortuneately, I am forced to resort to that phrase sometimes.
    Some documents I've seen have ambiguous titles like, "FDDI signaling
    over copper media." Thats good as a title but just try to use that in
    everyday conversation!

         While the phrase CDDI isn't very specific, some ironing out still
    needs to be done by the industry as a whole. I like CDDI, I cast my
    vote for that.
                                                         Jonathan
274.3KYOA::KOCHIt never hurts to ask...Mon Jun 24 1991 14:424
    Well, there is the statement that FDDI will be renamed "FAST" DDI.

    Then we can have CFDDI or FFDDI. But it will probably be a real
    political battle with the naming. Something else to waste time on...
274.4TPDDI a Trade MarkTMCUK2::G3WTV::BAKERKeith J Baker, UK LANs Marketing ManagerTue Jun 25 1991 05:3211
Hi

At our recent Networks 91 Exhibition [where we demonstrated CDDI!] Chipcom were
distributing buttons with the phrase TPDDI and it was marked TM [ie. they have
trademarked it].

I guess for this reason we should not use TPDDI!

Cheers

Keith.

    .3 Well, there is the statement that FDDI will be renamed "FAST" DDI.

    Fast, compared to what ? Signal velocity in copper is higher than in
    fiber. CDDI would then be called TURBO FAST DDI ...

I haven't heard anything about "Fast"DDI -- and I was at the FDDI ANSI meeting
last week...
