How does this conference relate to the FIBER_OPTIC_LANS Notes
    Conference recently created on DELNI?

My guess is that this one will be more practical and deal with more
nuts-n-bolts issues, but thought I'd ask anyway...

I'm David Gagne from VMS Development. Linda Duffell, Bill Salkewicz,
and I work on the Ethernet drivers in the DECnet-VAX group within VMS.

We have been meeting with the FDDI adapter group to assist in their
design of the adapter/host interface. We will be writing the VMS
driver for all FDDI adapters to be supported by VMS. Our goal is
to make the interface to the drivers be very similar to the Ethernet
drivers' interface. It should be so similar that applications using
Ethernet should only need to add the FDDI device name to the
application code and it should work on FDDI.

I'm Paul Ciarfella from Communications Systems Engineering at
Taylor Street, Littleton. I am one of three engineers working on
DEC's implementation of ANSI's FDDI Station Management (SMT) standard,
which we call the Common Node Software (CNS).

	CNS

o is designed for easy portability and incorporation into any future
product which needs physical and logical connectivity to the FDDI
	   ring via the DEC/Motorolla chipset.
o manages the FDDI PHY and MAC levels, participating in PHY and
MAC level connection management between two physical stations.
o participates in SMT frame-based management protocols throughout
           the logical ring.

Two major goals of CNS are

	1. FDDI multivendor interoperability - this is a must for DEC's FDDI
products to succeed in the marketplace
	2. Easy portability so that new products will not have to
'reinvent the wheel', or in this case, reimplement the SMT software.
New products should be designed to incorporate the CNS software to
manage their connections to the ring.

Hi all,
My name is Alison Murray and I work for the PTT approvals group in
Reading. My goal is to get PTT approval for Fibre Products in all
those countries where it is a legal requirement for Fibre kit to be
approved for connection to "Public " fibre (ie Fibre run by the PTT).
At the moment there are only two countries who require approvals
for fibre and they are only interested in loss budget, safety and
	types of RX and TX.

Why am I interested in FDDI ??? The answer is simply that with 2km
between stations the links could easily go into the space governed
by PTTs. If that is the case then the kit MUST be approved !!!

I'm currently seeking approvals on a number of the FDDI products.
I'm sure that in the future that PTTs will start to offer a service
which will require "protocol" testing as well as "physical" testing
so I guess I'd better start to understand FDDI now before its too late !

Hello!
I'm Jim Chapman. I'm new to DEC and this conference.

I've been working with FDDI for 3 years now (since graduating), on both
FDDI and FDDI-II research projects for my previous employer in the UK.
My involvement was mostly with SMT/CMT/RMT/HMT
software design, and I'm familiar with the AMD Supernet-I chipset.

Now I'm working at DEC, Reading, UK, in Corporate Backbone Networks, as part
of a team developing a multi-protocol (including FDDI) bridge/router. So my
interest in the conference is both to get a feel of DEC's policies and
strategy regarding FDDI and FDDI-II, and to keep up with technical issues.

Thanks,
