579.0. "DCU_INFO: DCU Member Geographical Demographics" by PLOUGH::KINZELMAN (Paul Kinzelman) Thu Jul 09 1992 09:54
STATE SUMMARY REPORT
The State Summary Report shows the following:
- how many DCU members live in a particular state
- the total loan balance of members in a particular state
- the total deposit balance of members in a particular state
HOW TO READ THE REPORT
ST Members Loan Balances Deposit Balances
AK 21 $9,394.25 $18, 960.03
The first line of the report shows that DCU has 21 members in
AK with total loan balances of $9,324.25 and total deposit
balances of $18,960.03.
Please note that some states, such as California, have a large
number of DCU members (3,832), but no credit union branch or
ATM. In these instances, there is no large concentration of
Digital employees to support a branch or ATM.

Wow, DCU has almost twice as much in deposits ($350M) as it does in
outstanding loans ($205M)? That sounds like a good opportunity to
lower the loan interest rates to encourage more business on that side
of the picture.

I found it interesting to see how leveraged MA and CO members are.
ST Members Loan Balances Deposit Balances
CO 4,868 $5,089,344.19 $19,336,026.10
MA 38,496 $132,663,569.76 $194,568,030.81
CO members have a lot of spare cash lying around, whereas the MA members
are pretty much fully leveraged (no cash of their own).
Is this due to the relative economies of CO and MA?

More likely it's because it's easier for MA people to borrow from the
CU. I'm not sure if mortgages are offered in CO but I believe that
if they are they were still offered earlier in MA. And I suspect houses
still cost less in CO than in MA.

It probably has a lot to do with the amount of money loaned out in
the form of mortgages and especially home equity lines of credit and
when those loans were offered in various markets.
Or maybe us easterners just charge a lot more on Visa... ;-)
But by all means, borrow money from DCU!

| You can get a mortgage from DCU in CO, and having an office here makes it
pretty easy to borrow; but you're right, housing is generally
less expensive here then in GMA. Last time I briefly compared prices, a house
which might run $60,000 here was running upwards of twice that in GMA.

| I'd beg to differ with the characterization of Digital as having
insufficient concentration to support a branch. There are more than
enough facilities (and employees) in the South Bay area of San Francisco
to warrant a branch in perhaps Santa Clara.
Santa Clara, Mountain View, Cupertino, Palo Alto, Sunnyvale, with
San Francisco, Concord, Livermore, and a few others within striking
distance. Santa Clara is a whole lot closer and practical for a San
Francisco employee like me than Colorado Springs. I'm sure the folks
in LA would appreciate something that's at least in the same time-zone.

Michigan has 589 DCU members. It's not too hard to figure out that the
vast majority of them reside in the Detroit area.
Most of the Detroit offices are all within 5 miles of each other.
Sounds like a good place for, at least, a DCU ATM. Maybe more people
would join if this convenience existed for them.

I thought Mountain View was closed a while ago and that Cupertino had
been spun off into their own company and lost alot of employees in the
process.

Apologies if it already exists. I'll gladly settle for a pointer
to the note.
Thanks,
