567.0. "RC Promise 6; Act like a CU not like a bank" by SMAUG::GARROD (Floating on a wooden DECk chair) Mon Jun 08 1992 21:56

o In short, turn the DCU back into the successful credit union it once
was. We need a credit union that is committed to serving its members,
not one that is committed to trying to imitate a commercial bank.

Trying continously. Will take some time though. This is a very
fundamental change of mindset. Not all agree on what "committed to
serving its members" is. I know what *I* think it is.

Thanks for those answers, Phil, in this topic and in the previous
several. I presume more will be coming, but these did help some.

    RE: .1

What are some examples of "committed to serving its members" as
thought by various board members & DCU management folks?

I'm curious where disagreement might come in. I would think most
of the fundamentals would be straightforward.

Or do we have some seriously latent bankers floating around? :^)

    Thanks,

    Karl B.

    RE: .3

Well, for example some may believe that the best way to serve the
membership is to expand into new service areas. Others may believe
that lower loan rates may be best. A third group may think that ATMs
on every corner is the best approach. I can only speak for myself,
all others will have to give their own opinions. I will write up
a detail description of my priorities and post it here.

567.5A big 0 out 10 here -- zero progressSMAUG::GARRODFrom VMS -> NT; Unix a mere page from historyTue Jan 19 1993 23:3911
I feel performance on this front is very poor. Things like credit cards
still require annual fees. The statements I get each month still don't
tell me what the interest rates are. The software in the ATM machines
is abysmal (eg you can't get a screen printout of balances, you have to
get bits of paper). Also it annoys me that when SHARE 5 goes below 0 it
dips into CREDIT LINE before dipping into SHARE 10.

All sorts of operational things like the above need to be improved. I
see little to no progress here. All of the above except the last are
done better by Baybank. I expect better than Baybank from my credit
    union.

Things like credit cards
    still require annual fees.

Not completely true. Annual fees are waived if you meet certain
    criteria.

The statements I get each month still don't
tell me what the interest rates are.

That information is available from EasyTouch, Livewire, and branches,
    isn't it?

The software in the ATM machines
is abysmal (eg you can't get a screen printout of balances, you have to
    get bits of paper).

Does anyone's ATM do this? I think of this more as a security feature.
It's harder to read account balances over someone's shoulder if it's
printed out on paper instead of the screen.

Also it annoys me that when SHARE 5 goes below 0 it
dips into CREDIT LINE before dipping into SHARE 10.

I agree. I'd like to see an option to have overdraft protection in
Share 1 or 10 before going into the credit line, especially since the
interest starts accumulating from the moment the credit line is
accessed and there is a delay in notification that the credit line has
    been accessed.
567.7DCU = bank? Again?SSDEVO::HAMPTONPhil Hampton, HSC Software Devel.Tue Jan 10 1995 15:389
I couldn't find the topic I really wanted so this one'll have to do...

Remember all the talk about comparing DCU to banks when it came to stuff like
interest rates, service, etc? Specifically, didn't Phil G. make a major point
of bringing this up whenever the "old board" tried such tactics?

Well, did anyone notice and find "interesting" the little table in this
month's Network newsletter? It compared DCU's rates with eight other -- you
guessed it -- banks. Hmmm, the more things change, ....
567.8CRASHR::JILLYCOSROCS -- In Thrust We TrustTue Jan 10 1995 16:144
Well since the BoD don't have direct control over what DCU management puts into
the newsletter it doesn't surprise me that DCU management is still comparing
against banks. Only one of DCU management has changed. Hopefully a new Pres
will clean house if these management people don't change their mind set.
567.9Where is workers on the list?STAR::BUDAI am the NRATue Jan 10 1995 16:526
From what I noticed it looks like they dropped a comparison of
1 or 2 S&L/CU/Banks, as compred to what they used to do...

I do not see Workers listed this time.
