As I've mentioned before, I'm also a member of the Navy Federal credit union - an institution that continues to amaze me with its extremely high levels of membership services and competitive rates. With all the controversy swirling around the DCU election policies, and candidate writeup "limitations", and the sore point of how "Nominated" candidates should or should not be denoted as such, I thought I'd share a brief description of NFCU's ballot: The ballot contains slots for 4 BOD members, and 2 credit committee members. For the BOD members, there were 4 candidates nominated by the Nominating committee (all are Admirals) and one Petition candidate (a Lieutenant commander.) The 4 Nominating committee candidates appear under the words "Nominated by Nominating committee". The petition candidate appears immediately below under the heading "Nominated by Petition". There is also a line for "WRITE IN" which is open to _ANY_ NFCU member. For the Credit Committe, there are 2 candidates (Both civilians) listed as "Nominated by Nominating Committee" - there are no Petition candidates, but there is a Write-in line. The biographies of the BOD candidates are only a few lines long, and are a resume of Degrees and Military ranks/assignments. (There are no Editorial comments or platforms included.) The 2 credit committee candidates appear to be NFCU employees, who are probably analagous to DCU employees judging from the Biographical data. My reason for this long dissertation is not to defend or criticize DCU's ballotting process, but merely to provide some Perspective on how another (top notch) credit union handles its balloting. -al

I just received the 1992 ballot for the DECUS Board of Directors. It's not a credit union, but perhaps it gives another data point as a not-for-profit cooperative group. Each DECUS BoD candidate is represented by a picture, a biography and a candidate statement. On the back of the ballot form is the following information: About the Candidates Each candidate was invited to submit 300 words about his/her background and 450 words why he/she should be elected and/or what he/she would like to accomplish. The statements have been typed in as submitted by the candidates. Slate of Candidates All candidates on the ballot have met the objective criteria outlined in the Chapter's election policies and procedures. xxxxx "xxxxx" xxxxxxx xxxx x. xxxxx * xxxxxx x. xxxxxxx xxxxx x. xxxxxxx * xxxxxxx x. xxxxxxx * xxxxx x. xxxxxxx * * In the opinion of LDEC [Leadership Development and Elections Committee], these candidates additionally met the subjective criteria outlines in the Chapter's election poilcies and procedures. There is no indication of incumbency, except in the candidate biographies as written by the candidates. (If I were using this as a model, I'd throw out the subjective references and all the he/she his/her and/or garbage; otherwise, I find the ballot package very helpful.) | |||||
