Including or excluding politicians? 8-)
I believe these are many of the symptoms of people in positions of
power who have been in power for any length of time. That is why I
believe it is very important to have a limit on how many consecutive
terms any elected official may serve. The longer one holds such power,
the further away one tends to get from the people who put you in office.
And once you have the position, incumbency all too often is a lock on
the position, whether it's a Board position or Senator. The current
BoD controls the communications vehicles of the credit union. They
restrict access to information concerning their past performance in a
fiasco that has cost our credit union millions of dollars.
Only when people wake up, take an interest, get involved and demand
change and accountability will things improve. Otherwise, we will be
faced with endless streams of disasters like we have seen at DCU and in
Washington.
Stepping down my the soapbox now...

Once the old board is overthrown, we should ask the new board to
investigate how many pairs of shoes were bought with DCU funds.

| If you go to the DCU headquarters, on the wall at the end of the
main corridor as you go in, at the end nearest PK03, is a plaque
on the wall commemorating the building of the headquarters. It
lists the names of the president and the BoD at the time (Mangone,
Steinkrauss, et al). To me, that example of self-aggrandizement
typifies the fundamental flaw of the current BoD. That sort of
thing I expect of politicians; I don't expect it from the officers
of a credit union.
How much more appropriate would be the plaque listing all the charter
members of DCU that is currently hanging in the DCU branch in the mill
on 5-4.

| How appropriate that Mangone's name is on the plaque. I hope we can
keep that there for a long time as a rememberance of things past.

I know the popular press likes to do this, but here is a situation where he
was misquoted. The "to" has been added in. It still was a convaluted sentance.

All "spin control" aside, is this yet another case where what he said
(the Dano) differs from what the published text reads, but not from the
reports? I have seen at least two cases where what the "poplular"
press published has been attacked by Danies staffers based upon the
released transcripts, but when you "listen" to a recording of what was
said, the press got it correct.
Sorry for the non-topical disturbance.

Yeek. I got my quotation from _The Quayle Quarterly_, Volume 3 Number 1,
page 6. I just called the publisher (a Deborah Werksman; TQQ is out of
Bridgeport CT). She said that the author of the article (a Frederick
Clarkson) actually attended the Christian Coalition conference, was there
when Dan Quayle made his address, and has it on tape.
But she said she feels that being very sure about such things is important,
and she's going to call the author and review the tape. I promised to call
her back next week to find out whether that "to" is on the tape or not.
(Stay tuned.)

| Re: .-several
What seems to happen is that Quayle's speech writers give him a good
speech which Quayle himself then manages to botch by changing a few
words. So the original speech would not have the critical "to" in it,
but a tape recording very well might have the "to". This discussion
from an article in the Denver Post yesterday.
The question is, do the reporters use the same criteria when reporting
Quayle's speeches as they use for the speeches of other politicians?

Now now. Lest this head down a Soapbox rathole, I'll leave it at:
I thought the question of the day is - what do our leaders say and think,
and how do their past and present actions, both public and covert,
effect our lives, our finances, and our futures; for the positive,
negative, or irrelevant.
I'm glad to see we are finally getting back to discussing the issues
here at the "employees'" credit union. ;^)
It does seem to apply, doesn't it?

After I called her (see .9), the publisher wrote to the author. (The author,
Frederick Clarkson, attended the conference, taped Quayle's address, and
prepared his article from the tape recording.)
In response to my relayed question, Carlson went back and listened to the
tape again. He says that Quayle did say "never surrender to what is right".
The word "to" is on the tape, as is a stunned audience silence immediately
following.
We now return you to follies closer to home...
