331.0. "Livewire article on special meeting" by CLT::OVER::JACKSON (Collis Jackson ZKO2-3L06) Mon Oct 21 1991 11:00

Here's my shot at a request. Perhaps they will reconsider?

Subj:	Announcing the DCU Special Meeting in Livewire

Good morning.

In reading the DCU notes conference, I read that you have chosen to
not include in LiveWire an announcement about the DCU special
meeting to be held on Tuesday, Nov. 12. The reason indicated for
this was that the officers of DCU itself did not want such information
published.

I believe that this decision is worth reconsidering. If you are
willing to reconsider here are some points that might be helpful to
you in your reflections:

  - What is the purpose of LiveWire? If an article is simply factual
information of great interest to employees (which does not slander
or badger anyone), should it (not) be included?

_ What controls LiveWire? Are you a free and independent entity
separate from DCU? Are you willing and able to choose for yourself
what is newsworthy and fit to publish?

  - What is the stated goal of both the President of DCU and the
Board of Directors of DCU? In case you were not aware, both
the President and the Board of Directors have within the past
    month said that they intend to *improve* the flow of communication;
    not restrict it.

  - What is your responsibility (if any) to DCU? Is this responsibility
primarily to the current staff or to the owners (i.e. the
shareholders)? How will LiveWire be perceived if it refuses to
publish this factual notice? How will LiveWire be perceived if
it does publish this factual notice?

I am not familiar with the internal workings of LiveWire or how the
editor makes decisions. However, I will hope that you, like all other
Digital employees, will attempt your best to "Do What Is Right". I'd
be very intested in hearing back from you about any decisions you
might make and the reasons for them.

				Sincerely,

				Collis Jackson

Since I had originally submitted the request to LiveWire, Jim Johnson
called me early this morning. He indicated they are reviewing the
request. Like Leslie said, they have never had this situation occur
before. When he gets back to me, either way, I'll post the response.
I, too, hope they will do the right thing.

Regardless of outcome, this should be added to the list of grievances

331.5An updateCLT::OVER::JACKSONCollis Jackson ZKO2-3L06Wed Oct 23 1991 10:429
I had a very pleasant conversation with a LiveWire employee. It was
indicated that a situation such as this had never been encountered in
LiveWire's history before. My mail message will be passed on to Jim
Johnson. Evidently it is Jim's call. The decision will be reviewed
(I believe), which does not yet indicate what the final decision will
be. Jim has been very busy as of late, so I'm not necessarily
expecting an answer today (he's not in the office right now).

Would (polite) VAXmail to Jim Johnson be useful?
331.7WLDBIL::KILGOREDCU Meeting, 12-Nov, 7:30PMWed Oct 23 1991 14:197

I sent (polite) mail to GRIMLY::LW, and received a (polite) reply that
it had been forwarded to Jim, who is considering the matter. I can't
see that it would hurt for Jim to receive in this manner a few more
(polite)(short) messages indicating that others are interested in this
    situation.

Subj:	DCU special meeting notice

Thank you very much for your favorable consideration of my request that
you post the DCU special meeting notice in LiveWire. It is very
encouraging that you carefully reviewed the situation and decided
that it is better to publish information that the shareholders
(presumably) desire to know than to withhold this information.

I understand your reluctance to get involved in a dispute between
the DCU board of directors and some shareholders. However, I think
you will agree that your actions are simply a service to the
shareholders rather than taking sides in a dispute. Thank you again
for your willingness to do what you thought was right.

				Sincerely,

				Collis Jackson
