| Does it compensate for the exchange rate? Do you have to pay extra
for it?
I'm going to Montreal in June. It would be nice to have this!

| Although I've not done this, I'm sure you get Canadian dollars
at the "current" exchange rate, plus some minor fee (probably
less than you would pay in a hotel or restaurant).
Also, you pay the standard network fee, at least.
For more details, call the DCU and ask.

Where in montreal are these ATM machines? Canadian banks
close around 3 on friday, and it's almost impossible to
get cash up there if you're just on a weekend trip...
Most importantly, is there one at DORVAL or St Hubert
airport?

24.4 | Royal Banks are ubiquitous | PBSVAX::HALBERT | | Thu Apr 23 1987 11:14 | 17 |
| As I mentioned in .0, I got money from the Royal Bank ATMs. I was
in the Toronto area, and these banks are easy to find. I also did
the same thing at Expo '86 in Vancouver, which had Royal Bank ATMs
on site. Since Canada has only a few banks, and they are all pretty
large, I think you should have no trouble finding Royal Banks in
Montreal just by looking in the phone book. I just tried calling
1-800-THE-PLUS, and giving a phone exchange in Toronto, but it claimed
there were no locations there, which is obviously wrong.
Other Canadian banks may also be part of the right networks. I had
no luck with ScotiaBank, and when I cashed some AmEx traveler's
checks at a ScotiaBank when it was open, they charged me $2! I would
have preferred an ATM!

I travel to Canada frequently, and now since the DCU ATM cards are
on the Cirrus system, I can find them *EVERYWHERE*!! JOUR/NUIT,
Banque du CANADA, Bank of Montreal, and every mall that I have been
to has a Cirrus machine that I can get Canadian money. Yes, the
exchange rate is fair (about 15% today) and it shows up on my monthly
statement already converted to American funds!! Just like other
ATM's though Cirrus charges the dollar. Now, if the DCU would only
convert my excess Canadian into American when I return......?
Come to think of it, DOES the DCU offer currency conversion services???

I'd doubt it. That's a BANK function. DCU isn't a bank, even though
it offers some of the same services. I believe almost any BayBank
branch will do U.S./Canadian currency conversion (excluding coins);
major branches do other currencies, sometimes needing advance notice.

Actually that is a COMMERCIAL BANK function. Something about a Federal charter
instead of a State charter needed to handle foreign currency.
