2256.0. "Force 5 vs. Escape" by POWDML::HUNTER () Mon Mar 18 1996 12:17

Has anyone heard of or had any experience with a small, Sunfish-type
    boat called the "Escape"?

I'm looking for a replacement for my old (nearly 20 years) Sunfish,
and have seen the adds for this but have never heard of it before
(it's apparently very new to the market, which could be a concern.)

I have also been advised to check out the "Force 5" - any comments/
    comparisons would be appreciated.

I've seen the Escape and it is definitely targeting begnner
sailors. If you've owned a sunfish whether it has been for twenty
years or it an old one you have had for a few years I think you want something
more challenging and exciting. I have never sailed an Escape, perhaps they're
fast.

I can't say I know much about the Force 5, but I know it's been an
established racing dinghy for at least 20 years.

My 2 cents , worth probably less

Given the choice between a Force 5, a Sunfish, and a Laser, I'd
probably go for the Laser. The Force 5 is a smiliar boat although
perhaps a bit heavier and with slightly more sophisticated controls. If
you have any interest in racing at all then the Sunfish or Laser make
more sense because both have fleets everywhere. I would judge the
Sunfish to be slightly more sturdy than the Laser.

If you don't need the boat right away, you may wish to hold off a
couple of months. From what I have been reading, small planing hulls
are being spec'd for the Olympics in Sydney for the year 2000. US Sail
has looked at several designs to submit to the IYRU for Sydney, but
an article in the latest edition of their magazine said they are
leaning toward a new design with built in wings on the boat. The
pictures looked like a cross between a Sydney-18 and an F-108 delta
fighter of the 50s. If approved, this would be the hottest selling
boat world wide as people tried to get up to speed for Olympics.
