    "Digital and the America's Cup: The Computer Technology Behind the Win"

    8:30-9:00       Ralph Dormitzer
                    Introductions

    9:00-9:30       Vincent C. Moeyersoms
                    Overview of the America3 Foundation campaign for the
    		    defense of the 1992, 28th America's Cup; overview of the
    		    use of computer technology in America3's technology program.

    9:30-10:15      Dr. William C. Unkel
                    Summary of computer uses on the America's Cup boats and
    		    in the pre-race data gathering process; description of
    	            software for two boat testing, sail shape analysis and
    		    post race data analysis; demonstration of software will
    		    be made.

    10:15-10:30     B R E A K

    10:30-10:45     Digital's America3 video

    10:45-11:30     Dr. Jerome H. Milgram
                    Summary of numerical modeling for America's Cup yacht
    		    design; the central numerical tool is the velocity
    		    prediction program (VPP) which "sails a boat in a
    		    computer". The "inputs to the VPP include towing tank
    		    data, wind tunnel data for appendages mathematical models
    		    for the sails and computational fluid dynamics for the
    		    hull resistance due to sea waves. The rapid design
    		    evaluation made possible with computation allows tuning
                    the design parameters to the desired range of sailing
                    conditions.

    11:30-12:00     Jack Kleene

                    Presentation on America3 Foundation's computer modeling
    		    of sail performance, including the digitizing of sail
    		    shape and the use of computational fluid dynamics for
    		    sail shape development.

    12:00-12:30 Discussion and conclusion of Seminar

1942.1America's Cup/Digital Seminar (1942 set to nowrite)VARDAF::CHURCHDave Church@VBE (DTN 828-6125)Thu Oct 08 1992 10:2417
    Note 1942 (America's Cup/Digital Seminar) been set to no write!

    Ralph,

    Is there any possibility that the session is taped because I know
    members of the Digital sailing club down here would like to see it!
    Then we also have the sailing clubs in EHQ and UK to name just a few...

    If this is not possible could you pick up any handouts etc. which may
    be given out at the event and send them to me (Dave Church @VBE [Sophia
    Antipolis/Valbonne]).

    Also where could we obtain a copy of the "Digital's America3" video?

    Thanks and regards,

    Dave
1942.2Trying to get a Count...EMDS::DORMITZERMon Oct 12 1992 15:365
    Please reply to this note if you, or others you know are planning on
    attending the seminar. We are interested in getting a feel for how
    many people will be attending. The Doriot Auditorium holds 106 people.

    Thanks.

    	I am hoping to go, and I know of two others. I will not know for
    sure until Wednesday morning.

    Forrest
    Ps. As asked before will this be taped. I know they taped it
    		last time.

    Ralph,
      I plan on attending.

    I do.

    Me too.
1942.7Was it good etc.?VARDAF::CHURCHDave Church@VBE (DTN 828-6125)Mon Nov 02 1992 03:436
    So what happened, was it interesting...?

    I've sent a couple of mails to Ralph Dormitzer asking if it was tapped
    or not but as yet I haven't received a reply!

1942.8Really good, lightly attendedMILKWY::WAGNERScottMon Nov 02 1992 13:0018

    	It was pretty good. I sat right in front of KO (!) in the Doriot.
    Ken gave a good rah-rah, comparing his winning team to the A
    syndicate, etc. Then a bunch of different folks gave different angles.
    A little superficial for some of us technoids, but inside scoop, any
    kind, is always a treat.

    	Bill Unkel, local software guru, spoke as a sailing outsider
    getting rapidly pulled in, as well as bringing PC's into the world of
    saltwater. Jerry Milgram, local hull design/etc/etc guru had some
    tidbits on how far you _can_ really get with tank-testing. Neat. I
    forgot the sailmaker's name, but his effort, getting these new sails
    tested, was quite indepth.

    	Let us know if that tape gets available- I'd like to take it in,
    piece at a time.

    	Scott.

    I sat next to the camera person so I assume a video was being made.

    Since the event sponsor was the Maynard area training group, you might
    try Nick Ugrinow at LEDDEV::UGRINOW for estimate of when the tape will
    be available.

1942.10Thanks for the pointerVARDAF::CHURCHDave Church@VBE (DTN 828-6125)Mon Nov 09 1992 02:517
    Gene,

    Thanks for the pointer. I've tried mailing Nick a few times and I
    continually get node unreachable! Perhaps I'll have a go with Nmail or
    route it through MTS.
