1928.0. ""Wind"" by VSSCAD::GABRIELE () Wed Sep 16 1992 09:39

Has anyone seen "Wind" yet? Is it worth plunking down the big bucks
now or should we wait for the video?

I saw "Wind" last nigh and it is worth the price. I felt that at least
half of the movie was sailing, of course it wasen't, but the part that
was is great. On board action, close ups of boat to boat action, and
    some really beautiful underwater pieces.
To much for a small video screen.

Two thumbs up. The plot was stupid, but who cares? The
12 meter racing footage was terrific (too bad the REAL racing
footage isn't like it), and the International 14 footage
was simply amazing. Also, except for a little bad language
it's perfectly suitable for little kids.

    Most realistic scene in film:

Hero on port, Australian boat on stbd.

Hero: "Do think we can cross?"
Tactician: "Sure, we can make it."
    Trimmer: "Uh-uh, shaking head."

Repeat above dialog sequence three or four times, then **CRASH**

Very easy to relate to since it happens a couple of times a weekend,
though usually not accompanied by the **CRASH** part.

Anyone see the filming in progress? A lot of it happened in Neport one
    or two summers ago.

Anyone catch Kevin Cosner's "Waterworld"???? The movie stinks, but the
video of Randy Smythe stunt sailing that tri is awsome. The clip of the
boat doing about 15 knts toward dusk is enough of a shot in the arm to
shake off the winter blues for a couple of days.

Easy plot to follow: The Good guys sail boats, The bad guys drive jet
skis and powerboats (aka smokers).... ;>) ;>)

Now I got to figure where to rig those big rocks up in the mast head
to make the sail unfurl in 5 seconds like Kevin's.....

It was nice and refreshing to see a sailing boat in a movie that was moving and
more importantly had its sails full.

I have seen a film with John Candy staring. In it he did up and old sailing boat
and entered a race. In the race he caught up a fast looking sailing boat. The
only problem was the sails where always flapping around on his boat.

re. 6 the movie is Summer Rental if my mind is correct. I love the
beginning watching him stress out at work (air traffic controller).
Reminds me of a lot of folks here...

What was that film that came out a few years back where they tried very hard to
make the sails look authentic? To the extent that they were actually motoring
the square-rigger backward to fill the sails when filming in near-calm
conditions? Looked good in clse-up, apparently, but the cognoscenti noticed that
the wake was streaming from the bows during the long shots!

Last year I was sailing between Marblehead and Boston when I saw
an old fashion square rigger off Nahant with lots of small power boats
near it. The bizzare thing was that the sails were full, but from the
wrong direction! And the ship wasn't moving. Note the wind was very
very light at the time. Could be they were doing something similiar.
