1595.0. "Help to find school?" by AKOV13::BILLINGS () Fri Sep 07 1990 14:10

    Some time ago I seem to remember hearing of a sailing school in the
    Boston area that offers classes in early summer specifically for women,
    taught by women. I may have even read about it in this file.

    Anyway, I mentioned it to a friend recently, who is extremely
    interested and of course asked for name, phone or other info, none of
    which I could deliver.

    I have searched Learning_To_Sail, read most of the notes over again and
    done searches on Lessons, Women, Classes, all to no avail.

    At this point my eyes have glazed over, and I'm wondering if anyone
    knows or can remember the name of the school, a specific note in which
    it is mentioned, or anything else that would help.

    My eyes will thank you profusely, as will I.

    Thanks,
    Roger

1595.1Seen at Newport Boat ShowCHECK::DGUNNDale C. Gunn, Corp Conf Group, MRO3-3/N17, 297-5476Mon Sep 10 1990 13:4413

    I was at the Newport International Boat Show over the weekend and
    walked past at least 3 boothes of organizations aimed at providing
    sailing instruction specifically geared to women. I think I picked up
    some literature from at least one of them. I'll try to locate it at
    home and post the info here.

    Also, you might pickup any good sailing magazine, i.e., SAIL, Cruising
    World, Sailing, Sailing World, etc. and look in the back classified
    sections.

You may be thinking of Womanship. They advertise in Cruising World
(maybe in the classified sections) and possibly elsewhere. The
WoodenBoat School has in the past had learn-to-sail classes for women
only.
1595.3Couldn't Find Any Around NEAKOV11::GYOUNGDancin' at the Zombie ZooMon Sep 10 1990 14:0721
    I was looking for a woman's sailing program last winter as a gift for
    my wife. I searched through SAIL and this file and came up with the
    following ...... there is no woman's sailing program available in New
    England at a reasonable price.

    Womanship and Women for Sail are both geared specifically for women;
    taught by women ...... one's out of Annapolis and the other is out of
    Florida. They offer week-long courses for about $1000 ..... the Steve
    Colgate Sailing School offers a women-only course out of Chatham in
    the early summer .... also about $1000.

    In lieu of this route, I enrolled my wife in the Boston Sailing Center
    program .....Learn to Sail course. I had previously attended the
    same program and thought it was very helpful. She went for two
    consecutive weekends in May ..... and she enrolled a friend to attend
    with her. Learned a lot and had a great time.

    Hope this helps.

1595.4 Check the Sunday GlobeVICKI::MILNEMon Sep 10 1990 15:497

     This Sunday's Globe (9/9), featured an article in the Travel Section
    about a woman's only sailing school based out of New London Conn.

     Sorry I don't remember the name of the school.

1595.5Thank you to allAKOV13::BILLINGSMon Sep 17 1990 14:0116
    Thank you all for input/references/etc.

    Was able to track down Womanship in Annapolis (which was what I had in
    mind when my memory failed), and for the information of whoever else
    might have some interest, they do offer courses in the New England area.

    Base in N.E. is Long Island Sound, from whence most of their courses
    appear to start. In addition to some day programs (L.I. area) they do
    offer several multi-day overnight courses, Cape Cod area and Maine in
    specific.

    Of course, forgot to bring address and phone number to post this note,
    but will be glad to add if anyone interested. (That old CRS is
    beginning to attack the memory lobes!).

    Again, thanks to all.
