1463.0. "Bilge pump back-flow problem" by MAIL::MCLAUGHLIN () Sun Mar 25 1990 18:38
I just installed an automatic bildge pump and seem to have a problem.
Has anyone else encountered this? Have I done something wrong in
design of the installation? Suggestions?
My pump is installed in the keel sump, about 3 feet below the water
line. To get the outlet high enough, the total "lift" is about 5-6
feet. The problem is that when the float switch turns off after the
pump empties the sump, the water in the 5' of hose runs back into the
bilge, which is enough to turn the pump back on, and it will continuously
cycle. (The pump, a Rule 2000, has no problem with the 6 foot lift.)
I installed the (Rule Super Switch) float switch approx. on the same level
as the pump intake.
How have others solved this problem?
The only solution that jumps to my mind is to install a 1-way valve
just "above" the pump. Unfortunately my catalogs don't seem to list one
with a 1 1/8" ID, which is the size of the pump outlet and hose.
