8.3North Sails Cruising Course recommendedTRCA03::HALSEYI'd rather be sailing!Mon Apr 02 1990 15:4837
North Sails is offering a new "Cruising Course" in various cities
in the States and Canada. I have just attended one of these in
Toronto, and would like to recommend it to anyone from a beginner
    upto comfortable intermediate sailors.

I already have my Intermediate C.Y.A., and have gone cruising
in the B.V.I.'s. I initially hesitated about taking the course,
thinking that it might be another "keelboat for the dingy sailor"
type of course. After talking to one of the course instructors
ahead of time, I was convinced it might be of value.

Absolutely. It is very much oriented towards the person who
already has a keelboat, anywhere from 17' upto 40'+. It covers
some of the finer points of tuning your standing rigging, and then
covers upwind and downwind sailing from a performance cruising
standpoint (as opposed to racing). Their approach seemed to simplify
some of the theory you always hear, and try to make work on your own
    sails.

Also covered was weather (a bit shallow on this area), and heavy
weather cruising (always nice to know). As well as general seamanship,
safety, and sail handling (spinnakers, gennakers (North's name for a
    Cruising Spinnaker)).

In addition, they provide a fairly thick book (?$34.00 Can.)
they have just published, on which the course is built. This covers
the same material as the course, but in more detail.

They condense a fair bit of information into a one day seminar,
which if you didn't already have some understanding of your boat,
might be a bit too much. It seems like a good deal for $70.00 Can.

If anyone's wants, I can post the list of upcoming seminars
here. I found out about it when I was ordering a "gennaker" in
December, and later saw it in an ad in the Cruising World mag.

8.4The Contact List is GoodSALEM::KLOTZMon May 21 1990 12:3112
I was going to delete .2 because all of the starting dates have
indeed passed; but, I realized that it can still be use to get the
names and phone numbers of some contacts in various areas.

So - I will leave the note as it stands for now -- feel free to
call any of the listed folks for information on pending courses
    --
Towards fall, when I have some formal course updates, I will
    update the note accordingly.

8.12Learn Celestial this April at SeaRANGER::TELSEYSteve, DTN 226-2477Fri Mar 11 1994 16:3536

There's an opportunity in a month for folks to learn celestial
navigation aboard the roughly 100' schooner Harvey Gamage on a trip
from St. Thomas to Bermuda (and maybe crew from Bermuda to Fairhaven,
    Massachusetts.

The Harvey Gamage runs a special navigation practicum cruise each
spring and fall between St. Thomas and Bermuda. They have several
instructors aboard and spend the week teaching celestial to folks.
Classes are informal with a lot of hands on. Students are encouraged
    to do a day's work - morning sights, mid-morning LOP/running fix, noon
latitude, afternoon LOP/running fix, and evening sights. They may
stand watch if they really want to and can climb, steer, etc. just
about anytime. The ship provides a variety of sextants, sight
reduction tables, almanacs, charts, dividers, parallel rules, plotting
    sheets, small textbook, etc.

This year the dates are April 19 (depart St. Thomas) to April 26
(arrive St. Georges, Bermuda). The cost is $845 not including air
fare. If you'd like more information, contact Eben Whitcomb,
Dirigo Cruises, 39 Waterside Lane, Clinton, CT 06413 (203-669-7068).
I went last spring on a Bermuda-Gloucester cruise and can try to answer
questions if you send mail to me at RANGER::TELSEY.

This year the vessel will not be taking passengers from Bermuda to
the US. However, there may be some opportunities for those with time
available to stay aboard as volunteer crew (no pay, no cost) leaving
Bermuda around April 27-28 and arriving in Fairhaven, MA around May
    5. Last I heard they were looking for some additional crew, preferably
someone who was aboard for the practicum and was familiar with the
    vessel.

Standard disclaimers apply. I am not an owner of the vessel or Dirigo
Cruises and will gain no benefit (other than perhaps interesting
shipmates) from anyone joining the cruise.

8.13So, which line controls the throttle?VMSSPT::PAGLIARULOTue Feb 27 1996 07:5514
Hi,

I went to the Boston boat show this weekend. I have owned powerboats in
the not too distant past and the show reminded me just how much I miss the water
and being out on my own boat. Now I'd like to learn to sail. I'd like to take
lessons this summer but am not sure where to go or who to contact. Anyone have
any ideas on how to proceed? I live in Hudson, NH. If I do enjoy sailing as
much as I expect then my goal is to purchase my own boat (a 28' Catalina would
be nice). I am primarily interested in ocean sailing. Does that make a
difference?

Thanks,

George
8.14Learn in Marblehead?MPGS::BRODEURTue Feb 27 1996 08:2016

I started this sailing thing about 8 years ago. At that time I took
a few (3 to be exact) class's on a lake here in Worcester. Was fun,
taught me the basics but it was still lake sailing. Got a small lake
boat, did the lake thing for a couple of years then got tired of
shifting winds and working a lot to get 1/4 mile so decided to go salt
water. I took some class's in Marblehead MA. on Pearson 26's and a
Pearson 30 from Coastal Sailing School. To the best of my knowledge
they are still there. They offer both private and class's with 4 or so
students. I took a combo of both. Very good but not cheap (what is that
has to do with sailing......). They also allow you to rent their boats
once they have a little faith in you.

Give me a buzz if you want any more info,

For lessons in the N.H. area, I recommend New England Sailing
School. The owner, Mal(comb) Sandberg lives in Durham and last I knew
he sailed out of Wentworth Marina in Rye. My wife took a 3 day
course from him 7-8 years ago. He is very good and also laid back.

8.17Race and Win SeminarGRANPA::KMAYESStarboard!Tue Mar 25 1997 14:3028
I attended a two day "Race and Win" seminar two weekends ago that I thought
was good enough to recommend to others, especially the racers.

The first day was Bill Gladstone's Performance Racing Tactics. Presenters
included JJ Isler (the woman replaced by a man on "America cubed"). Topics
included race preparation, starts, upwind and downwind strategy and tactics,
mark rounding and finishing, and some discussion of the new rules. Really
good stuff, especially the many references to the "performance ladder".

The second day was "Ockham U", again presented by Bill Gladstone. This was
mostly devoted to target boat speeds, polar plots, VMG, and a relatively new
approach to sailing in oscillating breezes, the Wally. There was also an
interesting discussion on wind sheer and gradient, and for the Long Course
racers a useful chapter on VMC (Velocity Made good on Course) again dealing
with ladder rungs.

The Wally was the US's secret weapon in Freemantle in 1987 - it allowed
"Stars and Stripes" to beat "Kiwi Magic" and "Kookaburra" (both probably
faster boats), to challenge for, and then regain, the Americas Cup.

A bonus for me was that the seminar was held at the Naval Academy in
Annapolis. I had never been there before ... it sure is impressive real
estate!

Fascinating and stimulating material! Has anyone else taken these classes?

Regards,
Keith
