1368.1 | Few bare boats in Hawaii | FRAGIL::MCBRIDE | | Mon Oct 16 1989 11:03 | 14 |
| I looked for information on Hawaiian bareboat charters and found that
there aren't many opportunities. Most of the charters are crewed.
From what I gathered the waters surrounding Hawaii are quite
treacherous for the uninitiated and can get quite rough. The waves
hitting the western shore have Made in Japan written on them so they
have some time to build up a head of steam. I also believe that there
are not many good harbors to duck into so adding all these up leads to
a lack of bareboat operations. If you are experienced enough, you may
be able to talk someone into letting you charter their boat privately.
If you were to make a comparison, I would say it compares more to the
Grenadines, St.Maarten, Antigua etc.. The distances between anchorages
can be long relative to the Virgin Islands. I think the weather is
comparable in both locations.

1368.2 | AHHHH .... HAWAII! | VINO::LIU | | Mon Oct 16 1989 16:31 | 15 |
| I went to Maui in May as a regular tourist. Took boat over to Lanai and
back but saw no places adveratizing bareboat chartering. Did notice
that Maui has only a few harbors or coves. Lahaina has a man made
breakwater enclosed harbor. Molokai has 1000' cliffs all along its
northern shore. Nothing there. Don't know about the Big Island but
I don't think Kuai has anything. Most tourists go to Oahu. The smaller
islands don't get many tourists and one is privately owned and off limits
to all but native Hawaians. The waters can be rough, particularly in
the afternoon. From Maui you can see Oahu, Molokai, Lanai, Molokini,
and the Big Island (Hawaii). The winds are pretty steady and if you get
lost as some people do the next stop is Midway or Fiji.....
A real nice place to visit! Blue skies and following seas!

| I asked my local sailing expert the question. As in .1, "not enough
harbors" was the answer. 'Matter of fact, he and his family are going
out there in two weeks...they're taking their bikes, not their sailing
gear!

1368.4 | Article on Hawaiian charter? | FRAGIL::MCBRIDE | | Tue Oct 17 1989 14:07 | 7 |
| There was an article on Hawaiian charters in one of the mags awhile
back. It was written by a woman who took her teenage son (?) on a
charter there. It was a crewed charter though. She had good things to
say about the experience. I cannot remember if it was a sailing
magazine or Yacht Charter Magazine that had the article. Anyone else
see this?

| I recall a good article in Cruising World - primarily dealing with
the Big Island and Maui. Could have been about 12 months ago.
Certainly worht a trip to the library
