1281.0. "Nautical Taboos" by SRFSUP::PAPA (weight to weather) Thu Jul 13 1989 19:24

While hanging out around the waterfront, from time to time I hear
sailors handing down sailing traditions and taboos' which must be
followed. What's more interesting is hearing the same nautical
taboo from more than one source. Not that I'm paranoid, but I would
avoid disturbing the spirts any chance that I could. After all,
ignorance is no excuse in the hands of peril. So, I thought I would
express an interest in hearing any nautical taboos' you would care
    to pass on.

I thought I would start with a few...

if a boat is to be renamed, it is better that the boat is pulled
from the water and the name is given by the new owner.

bananas(the fruit, not the plant) seem to bring misfortune when
    carried on a boat.

(the old standard) red sky in morning, sailor take warning, red
    sky at night, sailors delight.

**** A silver coin under the mast

For me, it's a pre-sandwich quarter taped to the step. The tradition
apparently comes from the ancient Greeks who buried people with
silver coins on their tongues to bribe the guards along the
river Styx. Since dead sailors couldn't get a proper burial, coins
were placed under the mast to take care of the afterlife gratuities
    for the entire crew.

    **** Women aboard

    No explanation required :-)

**** Everything must be stowed right side up

This goes for books, charts and cans of Dinty Moore. Apparently, this
one comes from some primal fear that if things are stowed upside down,
they'll end up right-side-up when the boat sinks.

    -	Don't rename a boat. Her soul will depart and wander aimlessly.

    -	A fast boat is joyous...A joyously sailed boat is fast. (The
inverse, I suppose, is the taboo)

    -	On the practical side, a phrase taught to all young sailors
where I grew up, before any were allowed to participate in
sailing classes or board a small boat: It is bad luck (sic)
to board a boat without "pump, paddle, preserver, knife, an-
    	chor, extra line."

    -	Never tie a knot you can't untie as fast as you tied it.

    -	A splice is nice, a knot is not. (for running rigging under load)

    -	Never bring salt on a boat. (An insult to Neptune ?)

    -	Right over left, left over right,
Will give you a knot that will never go tight.
Right over left, right over left,
Will give you a knot that will leave you bereft.

    	(Square vs granny knots)

-One we tell our crew is "A clean boat is a happy boat, and a happy
boat is a fast boat." Sometimes it even works.

Never whistle on a sailing vessel as it will cause a wind far stronger
    than desired.......

If you're becalmed, scratch the mast & whistle to bring up the wind.

Never turn a winch backwards. If you do, each click means 1 sailor
    will die.

Never cut hair on a boat, never shave. It will bring misfourtune.

Never chase away a bird that lands onboard.

as said " Never leave on a friday for a long journey"

Allway carry a bottle of rum or wine to share with king neptune

never come down a ladder backwards.

Never name your boat with a name that begins with a "S" ! Very Bad
    luck.

Boat names of 13 letters - Bad Luck

"A Clean Boat is a safe boat" - common sense

Renaming a boat at all - Bad Luck

So, don't rename your boat with a 13 letter name while whistling
and storing salt while hoisting anchor on a Friday with a red sky
at dawn and you should be okay!

The "Red sky at night, sailors delight, red sky in morning, Sailors
warning" one originates in UK and does have some basis in fact.

Red sky in the evening is caused by the late evening sun ( which
sets in the west ) shining on clouds in the eastern part of the sky.

In Northern Europe, the weather tends to come in from the west,
so red sky at night means that there is cloud in the east, but not
in the west, i.e. the weather is clearing.

Red sky in the morning means it is cloudy in the west, but not in
the east, i.e. its clouding over.
