1179.0. "Help Navigation Binoculars" by MJOSWS::REYNOLDS (Mark Reynolds) Sat Apr 15 1989 16:25

I am trying to locate Binoculars (preferably about 10 x 50) that
incorporate a compass, and a light for night reading, for coastal
navigation. I used one once, fell in love with it, but failed to
    note the brand name.

Does anyone know who makes these?

    Thanks in advance.

Steinert makes a good marinized pair of what you're looking for. They are
main suppliers of binocs to the German Army and Navy. Check the List of
Advertisers in your favorite boating mag; I know they advertise in SBJ.

re. 0:

Consensus of opinion seems to be that a magnification of 7 is about the
most that is usable on a small boat. With greater magnification the
field of view is much reduced (making it harder to spot small objects)
and the image tends of blur from the motion. Plus more magnification
usually means more weight, which is tiring to hold. Our Fujinon 7x50
binoculars are splendid and I wouldn't want anything bigger.

To answer the question in .0:

None of the common brands (Steiner, Nikon, Fujinon, Tasco, etc) offer
a model with both 10x and compass. And for the reasons Alan mentions,
you wouldn't want them anyway. (Ref note 335.*) I have both a pair of
Fujinon 7x50 and Nikon 8x35, and the Nikon's are next to useless when
the boat's moving, great on the mooring though, for bikini searches ;^)

You didn't mention the depth of your pocketbook so here's a range of
prices out of the Defender catalog:

    Fujinon 7x50 MTRC-SX $399.95
                     FMTRC-SX $489.95
                     MTRC(ARC) $289.95

    Steiner 7x50 Commander $559.95
              7x35 Scout $379.95
              7x50 Pilot $419.95

    Tasco 7x50 322BCW $207.95

Personally I think that all of the compass/binocular combo's are a poor
tradeoff over buying the best optics you can afford and then using
a handbearing compass like the 'hockey puck' or Autohelm PC.
