| About $450 list. Haven't seen it in any discount catalogs, yet. 'Tis a
nifty toy, but there are many things higher on my I'd_like_to_have list.

What does KVH stand for?

| First 'discount' price I've seen ($359) is in the Coast Navigation
catalog which arrived yesterday.
But, CN is not noted for having the lowest prices. I'd try doing some
comparison shopping with Defender, Anchor Electronics, and West Marine
first. I'm sure they are all selling this even though the product
announcement was too late for most catalog printing schedules.
As Alan observes, looks like a neat toy, but I'm not ready for one yet
either. KVH has a history of making such rapid changes, features,
and improvements (not to mention prices) to their products (what other
company does that anyway?) that I'll bet they'll have a cheaper, better
model out by the end of the year. Besides, I'd like to see Practical
Sailor do a review too.

KVH are the initials of the owner (something Von something, sounds like
Helligan???)
Original name of company was: Sailcomp Industries, Inc.
How'd I do? ;^)

Very good!
KVH stands for two brothers Martin and Robert Kitzvanheinigan. My
spelling of the last name is probably wrong. I went to high school
with these guys.

Is this the fluxgate monocular? If so, it looks like 1/2 a pair
of Fuginons at 3/4 the price.

If a fluxgate monocular employs Flux Capacitor technology, I think
the power source aboard most vessels would be seriously deficient
for satisfactory performance.

This is a self-contained device (handheld) with a battery inside. The
claim is that this battery will 'last a season' whatever that is.
KVH makes several other types of compasses using the same technology
which are more or less permanently attached to the boat.
Some (PC103, Azimuth 314, etc) expect to be powered by the boat's
electric system or with a gel cell battery option and others (Sailcomp
100) have self contained supplies. I have a PC103 with header/lift
option and Datamarine Link Interface. The spec's claim a 95 mA current
drain (120 mA w/night lighting). I'd expect this to be a negligible
load on most systems.
Regarding my earlier comment about KVH's product development cycle and
price drops: The predecessor to the new Datascope was the Sailcomp
HB105 Hand-Bearing Digital Compass System, a relatively bulky,
expensive ($995) item.
BTW, I love the way Defender advertises the PC103 prices:
With FREE (header/lift) racing package - $595.95
Without " " " " " - $535.95

Ahh...no more. The use of room temperature fusion cells obviates
the need for weapons grade plutonium. I'm getting one as soon as
Casio comes out with their $9.95 model.

| But you will need room temp. superconducting wiring on your boat
to distribute the power. I've already ordered a new harness for
my boat. ;)
