I just received a letter from my marina on Bass River on the Cape saying I need new chain for my mooring. This would seem reasonable if I hadn't had it done for three years. However, I had new chain put on last year. The marina said that the town of Dennis now wants at least 9 feet of 1/2 inch chain instead of the current 3/8 inch. The marina also said that probably due to high winds last summer (continuously) that a few of the links were pretty warn and won't pass town inspection. My question is twofold. One, is anyone else having to increase the size of their chain link? Is one years worth of high winds going to wear down the chain links such that they will fail inspection? Any advise will be appreciated. Jack

RE: .0, >>> The marina also said that probably due to high winds last summer >>> (continuously) that a few of the links were pretty warn and won't pass >>>> town inspection. 1) What's the town spec? Someone must have a standard of some sort they use to judge. Who is the local inspector? Would it be worth checking the chain wear yourself after finding out the acceptable minimums? 2) Does that marina do a big business in chain upgrades? ;-) J.

re .0: Replacement might be necessary. Marblehead requires chain replacement every two or three years depending on where the mooring is in the harbor. But, gee, only nine feet? My mooring has 30 feet of 1/2 inch chain and 40 feet of 3/8 inch. Guess what this does to my mooring costs.

is the need for replacement due to stress or to rust? is 2-3 year replacement extremely pessimistic, or is this just proper caution? - Jim

Jim, The person I spoke to at the marina (over the phone) said some links were worn due to consistent high winds and gusts during the summer. He said rust was not the problem. Perhaps my expectations are unreasonable, but, I would think that the chain links would be made to withstand the stress of continuous 10-20 knot winds and current. And I expect the links to last for more than a year. If I am wrong, fine. Perhaps the town of Dennis and the marina are being cautious. Maybe the recent change in weather patterns are driving that. But, I don't want to be taken advantage of because I own a boat which sometimes equates to being loaded with money. I'm trying to contact the harbormaster to find out what the new specifications are and what they look for when they inspect the mooring chain. Jack |
