I have the opportunity to crew on a 38 Bristol for the return trip from
Bermuda to Boston. We will be departing Bermuda between July 14
- July 18 depending on weather.
What recommendations can you make for clothes to pack, and other
personal gear.
I also need to obtain some foul weather gear. Since I don't have
a continuing need for it, I would like to obtain some inexpensive
but adequate foul weather gear.

The weather for our trip to Bermuda and back last July was mostly quite hot -- shorts and a tee shirt even during the 0200 to 0400 watch. There was one cold night leaving Buzzards Bay. Most any cheapo foul weather gear should be ok. The air and water are warm enough that getting a little wet shouldn't be a problem as long as you can keep the wind off. Do take some warm clothes just in case. | |||||
| 806.2 | Pack and then Unpack 1/2!! | OZZAIB::WOCHE | Fri Apr 22 1988 15:04 | 11 | |
When I've done the trip your contemplating I've brought a couple
of bathing suits (because I live inthem during the summer) and loose
clothing. Bring one pair of long pants/sweat pants and a long sleeve
shirt to keep the sun off. More than anything I would pack a full
suitcase and then unpack half of it. The tendency is always to
overpack. Remember, you can always wash out a t-shirt to use again.
I agree about the cheapo foul weather gear. You won't be needing
the expensive stuff to keep warm!
Good luck and have a good trip!

| 806.3 | DECK SHOES | CAMELS::MCGARRY | Fri Apr 22 1988 15:22 | 22 | |
One of the most important items are DECK SHOES. Don't
wear black soled sneakers or hard sole shoes. They leave
marks on a fiber glass deck. SPERRY shoes are very good
and expensive, but they offer canvas ones that are less
expensive then the leather ones. The important thing
to look for in the deck shoe besides comfort is the sole.
On a wet and slippery deck, you do not want to slip
overboard and deck shoes have special soles to help
prevent this. Wearing deck shoes also helps to keep your
feet safe from all the little hardware on the deck that your
toes just might find by accident (ouch!#%).
Sun glasses, sun tan cream, and a hat. You can not believe
the glare you can get from the water at sun set. Also a
strap ($1.50) for your sun glasses, you don't want to lose
them overboard. Have fun.

| 806.4 | Good Replies! | WOODIE::HOGLUND | Mon Apr 25 1988 10:56 | 11 | |
Thanks for the replies.
I used to own a sailboat and have deck shoes. I'll remember to bring a
hat or two. I was concerned that I might need some warm clothes for
some cold nights. It doesn't sound like that is a major problem. I'll
bring a sweater and one pair long pants. Also thanks for reminding me
to bring long sleeve shirt for sun protection not just cold.
