I am interested in any info about Newport 28 II build by Capitol
Yachts in Calif. Sailed one about two weeks ago off Marina Del
Rey and liked how it sailed...but I am still a novice and don't
want to buy the "wrong" boat. I am mostly concerned about how good
they are made...will it last etc. Most of my sailing is at Heron
Lake (7300 ft elevation) in New Mexico. I currently have a Hunter
23 and like it but better half requires private head and more head
room. Lake freezes in winter so I need to haul boat about 100 miles
south in winter (Oct-Apr) so I must be able to trailor boat. Capitol
says they quite frequently make mast hinge adaption and will provide
a method to raise mast with winch. Only dealers in New Mexico sell
J boats (wind & Water) and Catalina, Hunter & O'Day (Apache Marine).
Like most high mountain lakes Heron goes from calm to 30+ and sometimes
50+ winds in less than 20 min. We race thru whatever comes (nothing
lasts long on the lake...meaning weather) so want boat to do it
all (like everyone). As I said, lake is 100 mi from home so all
of us (2 kids and spouse) sleep on boat on weekends. If boat was
capable would like to sail in Sea of Cortez.
Any info or other suggestions would be welcome!
thanks
Rick

Trailering a 28' boat may be very difficult and expensive due to the boat's weight and beam There have been extensive discussions of trailering in SAMIAM::BOATS. | |||||
