184.2 | New Club in Portsmouth RI | SLSTRN::RONDINA | | Sat Sep 02 1989 23:55 | 13 |
| I have just found the Sailing Notes and glad to have so many sailing
enthusiasts at DEC. There is a brand new sailing club in Portsmouth,
RI, called Adventurer Sailing Club. There are only 35 members. Boats
include a 4 Rhodes 19',O'Day 23, Pearson 30, 34' S2, and a Sabre 38.
The owner is Bing Murray and he offers flexible memberships. Phone
401-683 3852.
Does anyone know of any other clubs on Narrangsett Bay or
Massachusetts' south coast? I was raised in RI and cannot get used to
the cold waters of Cape Cod Bay.

184.3 | A Sailing Club ? | WAV14::PARSHLEY | | Tue Sep 05 1989 17:26 | 4 |
| My wife attended Bing's sailing class this past spring. What is
the function of the club ? Why would you join ?

184.4 | My interest in Portsmouth Club | SLSTRN::RONDINA | | Tue Sep 05 1989 17:56 | 37 |
| I would appreciate having her opinions of Bing's Adventurer Sailing
Club. To answer your question about my interest in it:
I have been sailing since I was a kid, but mostly small boats. I want
to move up to cruising in 27'+ boats, but do not want to own because I
estimate I would only use a boat about 12 days per year. With my
family responsibilites I have other things occupying my time.
The Boston Harbor Sailing Club comes about the closest to what I want.
So I took their Basic Coastal Cruising and Night Sailing Courses so I
could certify for membership for use of their Pearson 26 fleet. But,
Boston Harbor, and surrounding waters seem so congested with commercial
traffic, plus navigating in and around the harbor islands can be
tricky. Lastly, I hate cold water, having been raised in RI with the
Gulf Stream warm waters.
I was in Portsmouth and visited the Melville Boat Basin where I saw
Bing's club. I have talked with him and he has a small club with
bigger boats available, 30-34 footers. The real attraction, though, is
that he will offer me a Flex-time membership so I can take the 12 days
of sailing when I want them. Other clubs either have full year
memberships or monthly ones.
Best of all Narragansett Bay with warm waters, less commercial traffic
and then off shore- Block Island and points north and south.
I am planning on going down on Friday Sept 8 to be checked out by Bing
as to my sailing abilities.
I would realy like to hear about your wife's experience with this club
and with sailing in Narragansett Bay.
Thanks,
Paul

184.5 | BING'S SAILING SCHOOL | WAV12::PARSHLEY | | Wed Sep 06 1989 15:18 | 14 |
| The cost of the sailing school was $385 for 3 days. The number of
students was limited to 5 aboard the Sabar 38'. The topics to be
covered were basic boat handeling, under power and sail. Docking,
sail boat terms, points of sail, navigation, electronics. After
the three days my wife would take the helm, if I sat next to her.
Take the boat out of the slip, if I told her step by step what to
do, and that's about all. She felt take she needed alot more time
handeling the boat than she got and Bing skiped over much of the
topics listed. Bing's style seem to be telling rather than instructing.
This past weekend the family when to P'town and back to Boston.
My wife remarked that she is starting to put in place more of the
stuff covered during the course. I would rate the school maybe a
"B".

184.6 | How about the club? | SLSTRN::RONDINA | | Wed Sep 06 1989 18:01 | 8 |
| Thanks for the input on Bing's Sailing School. How have you found the
club/membership programs he offers, i.e. Advernturer Sailing club?
Paul
Also have you heard of a school/club in E. Greenwich?

184.7 | Sailing the Charles | WAV14::PARSHLEY | | Thu Sep 07 1989 09:58 | 7 |
| My Wife taking the course was the only interaction we have had with
Bing. My son just completed his first year with the Charles River
club. He certainly advanced during the summer, sailing Mercury's
and other small keel boats. Next year he is going for wind surfing.
Don't have any information on E. Greenwich.

184.8 | Thanks | SLSTRN::RONDINA | | Thu Sep 07 1989 11:28 | 14 |
| Thanks for info. I will be taking a short "qualifying sail" with Bing
tomorrow. I am hopeful that I will find his program a good one. The
advantages of his club are:
1. Bigger Boats
2. Lower ratio of boats to members (1 boat for 7 members)
3. Flexible Program for renting
4. Free parking at the marina
5. Sheltered, warm waters of Narra. Bay.
If interested, I can let you know how it works out

184.9 | Evaluation of Adventurer Club in RI | SLSTRN::RONDINA | | Wed Sep 13 1989 10:31 | 41 |
| For anyone reading this note and wanting information on the Adventurer
Sailing Club in Portsmouth RI, here is my experience so far with this
club:
1. Fabulous Boats - well stocked with equipment and extra amenities.
The club leases boats from private owners, so you have a lot of extra
stuff, ie. charts, books, cushions, galley equipment, etc. (Some of
the other clubs have very stripped-down boats where you have to bring
everything including toilet paper.) Plus the boats are well-maintained.
2. Club owner - very laid back person once he knows you are a
qualified, responsible sailor. Doesn't require a whole lot of
formalities, i.e. instruction, testing, etc. We went for a half hour
qualifying sail in which he had me show him my skills, and then said
I could take the boats out.
3. Great marina, brand new - boats are kept at slips not moorings.
Free parking, easy to get to, don't have to get into any kind of
traffic.
4. Narragansett Bay - sheltered, warm waters, with no navigation
hazards and deep water all over, plenty of coves, beaches and
interesting places to go.
5. Right now the club is offering the rest of the season, Sept and Oct
for $200, unlimited sailing. Next summer the club will offer an
assortment of different kinds of memberships, day, week, month,
yearly and a Flex-time.
As you can guess I am very keen on this club. I checked out the 3
major clubs in Mass, Coastal in Marblehead, Boston Sailing Center, and
Boston Harbor Sailing Club, from my research neither of the them seems
to have what the Adventurer Club has.
If you are interested in discussing it with me, just call me DTN 276
9400. Or call the club, at 401 683 3852, speak to Bing Murray the
owner and tell him I reffered you.

184.10 | 1990 Membership Costs | SLSTRN::RONDINA | | Tue Dec 19 1989 13:06 | 17 |
| I have had a few calls about the Adventurer Sailing Club in Portsmouth
RI about their membership costs. Basically they have 2 plans, a day
sailer one and a Coastal Cruiser one. Within each plan they offer
different arrangements, such as weekend, weekday, 1 month, coupons.
For full membership, unlimited sailing all season (April tO NOV 1) the
cost is $950 for day sailers (includes Rhodes 19' and Oday 23) and
$2450 for the Coastal Cruisers (30-38 footers). The one nice thing
about these memberships is that the club owner, Bing Murray, will work
out a special arrangement if possible. In my case he has offered me a
half season rate on the Coast Cruisers for $1225, for either May-July
or Aug-Oct.
If you want more information, give me a call and I can relate my
experience. DTN 276 9400. Club phone is 401 683 3852.

184.11 | 1990 Adventurer Fleet Details | SLSTRN::RONDINA | | Wed Mar 07 1990 09:22 | 24 |
| I just got more information on the Adventurer Sailing Club out of
Portsmouth RI concerning their fleet for this season. Basically they
have 3 fleets, one they own, the other 2 are leased boats from owners.
First,the day sailor fleet includes 4 Rhodes 19, Freedom 21 and ODay 23.
Second,the Coastal Cruisers are Ranger 30, Pearson 30, S2 34', Sabre 38.
Additionally if there is a large demand, the club has these boats "on
call"; Pearson 30, 2 Pearson 34's, Pearson 36, Catalina 27 and a CS 36.
Third,the club also offers charter yachts in the 30-38' range for those
wishing to take cruises of 3-7 days. Prices start at $840 for 3 days
on the Ranger 30 and go up to $2100 for 7 days on the Sabre 38.
Since the club has leased boats and they maintain them for the owners,
I have found the quality of the boats to be exceptional. Also the club
has a policy of a guaranteed boat for every member who wants one.
If you want more information, the club number is 401 683 3852. Tell
them I sent you.

This sounds VERY high (outrageous for the Ranger). I'm sure lower
charter rates are available elsewhere.

184.13 | Another Narr. Bay Club | SLSTRN::RONDINA | | Thu Mar 15 1990 14:49 | 22 |
| I just got a mailing from another sailing club on Narr. Bay. This club
is in Warwick, Greenwich Bay, approx 19 miles north of Newport on the
west side of Narragenaset Bay. It is
called the North Star Sailing Club. The offer 3 membership plans:
1. Daysailer on a Cal 22- full season - $925, weekdays only $695
2. Crusing Membership on Cal 28 & O'Day 27 - Full season $2250, weekdays
only $1695
3. Coastal Cruising Membership on a Cal 33 - $600up front then rent by the
day/week for $200 per day or $950 per week.
Their ratio is 10 members per boat. They also offer sailing classes.
I do not have any other descriptive information about the club, except
to say that I have talked to the club owner who has said that the club
is basically a Bay sailing club, with a typical day trip being a round
trip sail from Greenwich BAy up to Newport and back.
The phone number is 401 884 8909.
