3036.0. "NUTELLA??" by MAMTS3::SHAMMON () Thu May 09 1991 09:37

    I recently received a jar of this heavenly stuff called "Nutella" which
    is a chocolate hazelnut spread. Does anybody have any interesting ways
    to use this? Any suggestions would be appreciated!

    How about putting it on toast or on crackers, like you do with peanut
    butter.

  It's great for generating 15 minutes of peace in a house filled with
  small children. Just take jar out of fridge, open it, set it on table,
  and say "who wants a special treat?". The rest is pure magic.

  Aside from that, we haven't found much use for it other than the
  obvious spread on bread or crackers.
3036.3PEACE HAS A PRICEBELFST::MASTERSONValerie MastersonThu May 09 1991 10:023
    I don't know about 15 mins peace, but who is going to clean up the mess
    for the next half hour?

3036.4here's some!SSVAX::PIERMARINIThu May 09 1991 10:088
    sometimes I put it on cookies like shortbread or pizzelles...
    use it at hot fudge on ice cream.
    on zucchini or banana bread
    or like we used to do in italy...just scoop it out with a spoon
    and enjoy.

3036.5Nutela is heavenlyMR4DEC::MAHONEYThu May 09 1991 10:148
    It has been a standard, everyday snack in Spain for ages...
    it is great spread over a nice piece of french bread, my Mom always
    gave me a nice glass of mild and a large slice of bread with Nutela
    when I came home from school... (oh, those wonderful days!) I now give
    it to my children when I find it.

    Diluted with a little bit of milk and poured over icecream is also
    great, but my favorite is just that, spread over fresh, crusty bread!
3036.6breakfast toppingENABLE::GLANTZMike 227-4299 DECtp TAY Littleton MAThu May 09 1991 10:4012
  The mess ... well as we're constantly cleaning up messes, it hardly
  makes a dent.

  But kidding aside, reply .4 from Italy did suggest another very nice
  use: as a waffle or pancake topping. Before Children, we used to do
  Sunday brunches and invite a dozen or so friends over. One of the main
  courses was a waffle and pancake buffet, with "roll your own"
  toppings, like fresh fruit, fruit preserves, honey, and maple syrup
  for the sweet toppings, and an assortment of savory toppings. I don't
  recall that we ever used Nutella as one of the sweet toppings, but it
  sounds like a great idea. We also had lemon curd, which is an English
  treat I haven't seen much in the States.

3036.8EASY TO BUYMAMTS3::SHAMMONThu May 09 1991 12:255
    I have seen it for sale here in the Washington, DC area at the Giant
    grocery store, and my friend got it for me from the Commissary.

    He told me in Paris, street vendors serve it on hot crepes. Yum.

  We found it at either Triple-A in Acton, or Market Basket in Westford,
  can't remember which.
3036.11SuggestionsNEWPRT::HANUSA_JAJaneThu May 09 1991 16:137
    I happen to like it on croissants, or if you're making your own spread
    it on the dough and then roll it. I also agree with previous reply that
    mentioned spreading it on a crusty bread (yum!), or by the spoonfuls (a
    chocolate lovers dream!!). Some of the other ideas sound tasty too,
    guess I'll have to pick up a jar at the grocery store next time I go.
    Gosh now I won't be able to stop thinking about it (never read this
    file during your lunch hour!).
3036.12Another place to get it...CUPTAY::FARINAThu May 09 1991 19:245
    It's also available in the Pheasant Lane Mall in Nashua, NH. I can
    never remember the name of the store, though. It's a deli-like place
    not far from the food court (as you head toward Jordan Marsh/Lechmere,
    it's on the right). I've never broken down and bought it, because I'm
    afraid that I, too, will eat it by the spoonful out of the jar!!
3036.13CSSE32::GRAEMEOnly elephants should wear ivoryFri May 10 1991 08:527
    There's also a note on Nutella in the Chocolate file. It's becoming
    available in a lot of supermarkets - Market Basket for one. Spags also
    has it on occasions.

    Try dunking some of those Pepperidge Farms pirouette cookies in a jar
    of Nutella. Or, spread some Nutella over the top of a brownie if you
    are into instant sugar shock! :^)
3036.14CTHQ3::SANDSTROMborn of the starsFri May 10 1991 09:469
    Geez, I didn't know it was supposed to be hard to find - I've been
    buying it at my local grocery store (Donelan's in Littleton) for years.

    Want a really decadent dessert? Make meringues in the shape of little
    tart shells, put in a spoon of your favorite ice cream, and drizzle
    with nutella. It's great with Ben and Jerry's Chunky Monkey or Vanilla
    Chocolate Chunk. Ooohhh, it's too early to be thinking about this!

    I just wanted to tell all of you that reading this topic made my mouth
    water!....I thought, I wonder if anyone had heard of it here in
    Chicagoland.....well I checked and no one had, and I was getting very
    depressed.

    Then I talked to a very dear person here at the office and she told me
    of a German deli that also carried many imported items! I called....
    and GUESS WHAT.......they have it! So on my lunch hour tomorrow I am
    going to the store and buy some! I will let you know how it is!

    For all you Chicago/Elk Grove people.....the name of the place is

    I just had to think of the fact that here in Germany you can
    find NUTELLA

                             Everywhere (!!!!!)

    and some of you Americans are trying so hard to find it.

    If only it could be like this:

                            Nutella hard to find in Germany,
                            everywhere to find in USA

    BUT:

    Ultra Slim fast everywhere to find in Germany

    This would be MY dream (Sniff).

    I lived in Germany for four years and this is a common thing over
    there. It is cheaper than peanut butter and my german grandmother
    always had it. It is hard to find over here, and when you do it
    costs alot. We always spread it on the wonderful german bread they
    have over there. It is used just like we use peanut butter over here.

    It is definitely my favorite, and I really miss it along with the
    german bread. And the german rolls over there that are like mini

3036.51For me, moderation is the keyword hereOCTAVE::VIGNEAULTFri May 31 1991 09:1614

    I must admit that I think Nutella tastes pretty good, especially on
    ice cream as previously mentioned. Beware though, 50% of the calories
    come from fat, and it's very saturated fat. I didn't note what a
    serving size is, but on the bottle I have at home, it's 9 grams fat,
    and 160 calories per serving. The first ingredient listed is Palm oil
    which is one of the most highly saturated fats available. In moderation
    this is definitely tasty stuff, but I wouldn't make it a daily part of
    my diet.

    BTW, I also think Idylwilde Farms in Acton sells Nutella if it hasn't
    already been mentioned.

    Anyway, it's not gonna last very long so you won't have to worry about
    it spoiling!! :^)

    Jackie, you are lucky in Chicago.

    I've looked here (Krogers, Tom Thumb, Simon David, etc.) and cannot
    find it here in Dallas.

  Sheesh, I can't believe people can get this excited about it. I mean
  yes, it's good, but it's not white truffles, you know.

  What would you say if we came up with a recipe for it? It can't be
  that difficult. How about pureeing some hazelnuts and mixing with a
  milk chocolate syrup? Maybe even add a little frangelico liqueur or
  something.

  Sugar + oil + milk + cocoa + vanilla = milk chocolate

  Milk chocolate + pureed hazelnuts = my recipe

  Not bad for a guess, huh? I only missed the emulsifier (which you
  wouldn't need if you could get it smooth by yourself, and which is
  already in some chocolates). Then I suggested adding Frangelico ... I
  think my recipe wins.

  Another idea would be to add Grand Marnier instead of Frangelico. That
  sounds even better.

    Hello,

    I just saw this note and I want to add something to it. I write from
    Italy and I grew up with Nutella as well as my children are. Generally
    we spread it on fresh bread, but we put it in cakes as well. Other
    companies have tried to create a different kind of Nutella but I still
    believe it is the best chocolate spread of all.
    Another thing I do: I make some shortbread, make it like a tart and
    spread Nutella on top of it, then put it in the oven.

    The price of Nutella is in Italy (for the big jar) around $2.

    It really doesn't need to be refrigerated as it keeps for a long time.
    Actually I believe that in the refrigerator it loses some flavor.
    It could happen sometimes that you see a little layer like oil, but
    that is OK, just need to stir it.

    Hope this answers some of your questions.

    Ciao

    Thank you, Marinella!

    I'm glad to hear that you don't refrigerate it; I'll take mine out of
    the fridge! My neighbor enjoys her Nutella on fresh bread, too!

    I enjoy mine any way I can! Made an angel food cake this weekend,
    melted some Nutella, poured it over and then topped with fresh whipped
    cream.

    And yes, I am going to aerobics tonight!

    Cherie - of course - If I'm going to be *THAT* decadent, may as well go
    all the way with a glass of liquere, too!

    to have it really fresh! Bet it tastes different!

We add it to our favorite chocolate frosting recipe. Straight Nutella is a
bit expensive (and a bit rich) to use as frosting, but it adds a really nice
flavor to frosting. It mixes well with coffee flavoring, too, which is
good, since we always add coffee to anything chocolate...

    Hi Jackie,

    I've been busy for the last few weeks. Yes, I did get the jar (in one
    piece). It's great. Now I know why everyone loves the stuff.
    Consider me a convert. I'm hoarding the jar for myself.

    "THERE IS A GOD IN HEAVEN!!" was my reaction when I tasted this stuff.
    I must have licked that spoon for 10 minutes. My wife kept asking me
    what I was doing in the kitchen. The look of satisfaction on my face must
    have been one only she was privy to in the past. I have been scouring
    the stores for this stuff ever since seeing it in this file. When I
    I saw it on the shelf I nearly killed three people in the aisle
    getting to it. I found it at the PACE merchandise warehouse in
    Manchester this past weekend. I think the price was simiar to that at
    SPAGS about $2.99. I am visiting friends in NJ next weekend and plan
    on bringing them a jar. Can't wait to see the look on their faces when
    they taste it.

    I second that!! A friend brought some over this weekend (he'd already
    finished his bottle) and we had it with brownies ala mode. We only used
    a portion (1/3) of the jar, so the next day (I'd put it in the fridge
    overnight) I used a knife and scraped the rest out! WOW! I haven't seen
    it in my area (Leominster) but will start looking!

    Whoever started this note should be commended. Life without Nutella,
    I've discovered, is seriously lacking.

at this rate, the whole eastern seaboard will start vibrating from all the
nutella addicts frantically doing aerobics to avoid growing
"out instead of up".

I have, so far, managed to avoid the call of nutella, but I know where it is...
and it IS calling to me. It even has my name. Now, if the chocolate was just
a LITTLE darker....I'd be a goner for sure.

    And no matter how long you keep it, in or out the fridge, it never goes
    off.

    The only reason I know this is because a jar of it got pushed to the
    back of the cupboard and hidden for over six months. I mean do you
    seriously think a jar of Nutella would survive that long otherwise ;-)
