1446.0. "Where (in east MA) do you get good chicken?" by PIETRO::ANSELMO (Are those 2 really the best we have?) Wed Oct 19 1988 00:09

Am I just getting fussier, or is the quality of chicken in the supermarkets
going downhill? More and more it seems that I find wings with massive
contusions and hemotomas and even broken bones, breastbones that are
crushed and saturated with blood, and very large deposits of fat in and
around the thighs. I don't know whether the problems that I am seeing are
caused by breeding, diet, or mistreatment, but I would sure like to know
where I could obtain reasonably lean, flavorful chicken. It has always been
one of my favorite meats.

I know that this is not an appetizing topic for a conference devoted to the
preparation and enjoyment of food, but quality of ingredients should be a
valid topic of discussion.

1446.1Try Frank'sHOONOO::PESENTIJPWed Oct 19 1988 08:248
I've found Perdue to be relatively sound chicken. Also Holly Farms. These
are both premium varieties, and cost a bit more than the generic store brands.
However, they are usually prepackaged, and suffer less from the local
beatings given them by store personnel. Besides, if you have a problem with
Frank's chicken, you can always write him and get your money back.

1446.2Try a Kosher ButcherPVX::SFREEMANSam Freeman, DTN 223-5871, PK03-1/C18Wed Oct 19 1988 08:2614
    Try a Kosher Butcher. You will probably have to pay more
    but you will find unblemished poultry.

    In order to be certified kosher, the animal is slaughtered
    in a prescribed manner and is inspected to insure that it
    is free of blemishes and injuries. If the animal is
    blemished or injured it cannot be sold as kosher.

    There are kosher butchers in many towns adjacent to Boston
    proper. Look in the yellow pages under Markets - Kosher.
    Note that kosher markets close early on Friday and are
    closed all day Saturday and on Jewish holidays.

1446.3Bread & Circus SupermarketsSPGOGO::ALLENWed Oct 19 1988 12:2212
    Are you familiar with whole food supermarkets "Bread & Circus"

    I know they are located in Wellesley Hills, MA..Hadley, MA and
    I just heard on the radio Lincoln, MA/just checked for telephone
    number and they don't have listing for Lincoln. There is a
    Bread & Circus in Brookline and Newton..there headquarters is
    in Newton @617-332-2400.

    The radio advertisement was about their chicken and how they
    are cleaned etc....makes you only want to buy from Bread & Circus!!

1446.4Thanks for the replies.PIETRO::ANSELMODon't Worry, Be Happy...or else!Thu Oct 27 1988 07:528
Thanks for the pointers. I have used Perdue chicken for the last couple of
chicken dishes that I prepared, and there is a noticeable difference in
quality compared to the 'generic' supermarket poultry.

I look forward to visiting Bread and Circus when I have a chance. Sounds
like an interesting place.
