1160.1 | Try Liamos Market | TUNER::WHITCOMB | | Wed May 11 1988 11:27 | 12 |
| If it's lamb you want, then I would highly recommend Liamos Market
on Lake Street in Nashua. It is a small Greek market and from what
I understand from the native Nashuans, it is THE place to buy lamb.
They will even season it and put it on skewers for you if you wish.
I'm not sure about whole lambs, but I would give them a call; I'm
sure they'd be happy to assist you. We've bought lamb several times
from them and I can assure you, the quality is superb.
Their phone number is 603-882-1381.
Let me know if you have any luck!

1160.3 | buy live and have it slaughtered | HPSCAD::WHITMAN | Acid rain burns my BASS | Fri May 13 1988 09:39 | 25 |
| If it were me (and it will be sometime this spring) I'd look in the
Want Adveriser or the local classifieds for a live lamb. A lamb in the
50 - 100 lb range (live weight) will run between $50 - $100 depending on size,
pedigree, and condition. Most lambs are born in the Jan - Mar time frame and
the highest market for them is Easter. Those that are around now are being
fattened for fall sale at higher weight.
If you go this route you can expect 50 - 60% loss at slaughter (i.e.
a 100 lb live animal will dress out at 40 - 50 lbs). Take this into account if
you are doing price comparisons. The slaughtering should cost $10 or $12 and
if you want it cut and wrapped expect to pay about $.20/lb (dressed weight).
It usually takes me a 5 days to get back my meat (I have it cut and wrapped).
If you only want it slaughtered, you may have it back sooner.
You may not gain much cost wise, BUT
you know how old the animal was (most supermarket lamb is really mutton)
you know where the animal has been, what it ate (if you ask)
you are supporting local farmers and not New Zealand conglomerates
you'll have the best tasting lamb you've ever eaten
Al
P.S. I believe most supermarket meat departments will special order for you
if you're willing to wait a few days before your order comes in.

1160.4 | Another vote for Liamos | WOODIE::HOGLUND | | Tue May 17 1988 15:46 | 8 |
| Another vote for Liamos. It is the only place to buy LAMB. It is
N O T New Zeland lamb.
If you know of a local farmer or know someone that has sampled his/her
goods, it is a good way to go. I would be reluctant to pick a farmer
out of the phone book without any knowledge of the quality of the goods
sold.

1160.7 | Liamos for Lamb in Nashua, N.H. | CIVIC::WINBERG | | Wed Jun 08 1988 15:50 | 12 |
| At the suggestion of 1160.1, I checked out Liamos in Nashua, N.H.
It truly is an incredible little butcher shop. One of the owners
tells me their lamb all come from Colorado, and they butcher and
mail all over the United States, the Caribbean, Central and South
America.
I shared with the owners your recommendation, and they just glowed.
They fixed me some lamb kebobs that I did over charcoal for a family
cookout on Memorial Day. Tastiest, tenderest pieces of lamb I've
ever had.
Thanks VERY much for the tip.
