Andy Roxburgh resigned today as Scottish coach. He will retain his
position as Technical Director. Craig Brown, his assistant, will be
caretaker boss for the games against Italy and Malta. Craig Brown has
had a lot of success with the under age squads in recent years, and it
would not surprise me, although it would disappoint me, if he became
the successor to Andy Roxburgh. I would prefer the new boss to come
from the 1974 squad which I beleive was the best, and I would go for
Billy Bremner.

Archie.

Archie,

what were his reasons? I mean they're not actually out of the World Cup
yet.

Brian Clough and Terry venables are available!

What about Ally McCloud @:^)) He's the master of hype,Anyone who can
work fans up so much that 30 000 of them(bet you were there Archie)
turn up to wave the team off is ok in my book.

320.3Re-posted from WC topicPAKORA::AMILLARAnd some late news just in...Tue Sep 14 1993 21:0916

OK, I admit that I was at Hampden (When it had a North Stand) to wave
to the team. I still admire Ally McLoed for actually getting me to do
that! I even ran a bus to it from my work at that time - and the bus
was packed.

Newspapers today seem to be of the opinion that the SFA will take the
easy option and go for Craig Brown if he makes a reasonable job, ie
none of the players get killed, presumably, in the 2 final WC matches.

The run of 5 in a row for the WC looks over, will it be the end at 1 in
a row for the Euro championships. I'm almost saying "Who cares?" so
maybe it's time to bring Ally back.

Archie.

320.4It's getting worse.YELBUS::DSMITHGazza's my hero...NOT!!!!!Tue Sep 14 1993 21:3422

I don't think anyone was that surprised when Roxburgh quit. However,
the SFA in all their wisdom have appointed another "career" man to
run the national team for the next 2 games and will probably appoint
him manager in due course.

Now, I have nothing against Craig Brown, but the interest in the
international team is at an all time low. Surely it would have made
more sense to at least try to attract a high profile name to the job
and get the fans to support the team again.

I hope Brown can become a successful manager but unless the set-up
in Scotland changes, he'll struggle to build a decent team. There will
still be the usual half-dozen call offs after the players are forced to
play a league game on Saturday prior to a Wednesday international
match. How can a manager build a good squad of players when he's forced
to chop and change from 1 match to the next? The muppets currently
running Scottish football into the ground have got some serious changes
to make before we have a good international side again.

Danny.
320.5Aim for the best.ISIDRO::BREADIEWed Sep 15 1993 08:2811
Hey maybe we are better with an Ally type. I personaly am fed up with
the crap that we had ever since he left started by Jock Stein [world
class club manager crap international one]. He was first to con us with
"it's a marvellous achievement for a small country like ours to reach
the World Cup finals". Bullshit. No wonder we turn upand don't play.

If it's impossible for a small nation of 5 million or so to produce
excellent teams then someone forgot to tell Holland or Denmark in the
past or Norway and switzerland now.

Craig Brown - yeh that sums up the ambition.
320.6SFA partly to blame ??BREW11::RANKINEThu Sep 16 1993 15:0410
If were serious about having a credible international team then the SFA
have to be seen to be doing something. A couple of saturdays ago, the
English premeier league did not play, due to the international team
playing on the Wednesday following. In Scotland a full league was
played and 3 or 4 players were injured resulting in them pulling out
the squad.....wheres the intelligence in that ??

If we have limited resources, we have to utilise them all the more.

320.7They looked ahead for once ! KIRKTN::JJACKFri Sep 17 1993 03:128

The SFA knew before the match against Switzerland, that we were OUT of
the 1994 finals, and therefor didn't bother cancelling the previous
Saturday's matches.
If we hadn't been gubbed 5-0 in Portugal a few months back, you can
rest assured that there would have been a free week prior to the tie
against the Swiss.

Today's Sun carries an exclusive about Jane Nottage's affair with Andy.
Jane was Gazza's personal assistant, and one that told her story to a Sunday
newspaper. Affair been going on for a while, before she met Gazza. I think she
was at Italia 90 as England's press relations officer.

Have the SFA got a crystal ball then???

Remote though it was, Scotland did have a chance to still qualify, if they had
beaten the Swiss. The SFA should have given The National side all the assistance
it possibly could, by having the previous Saturday as a rest day.

Ireland suffered similar problems in the pre-Charlton era. Established
players withdrawing from the squad but making miraculous recoveries the
following Saturday. A strong manager can discipline these players.

It's just over a year since the European finals in Sweden but Scotland
look a pale shadow of that side. Scottish managers are doing very well
in England. Maybe one of them could be tempted to come back.

So you think if the SFA doubled a certain managers wages(which they
wont),he wouldn't consider it,attractive or not.I think he might.
