296.0. "European Cup WInners Cup FInal" by REOSV1::ONEILLS () Thu May 13 1993 12:58

I was priveleged to witness a superb display of Italian football by Parma in last
night's European Cup Winners cup final at Wembley. The margin of victory (3-1)
does not reflect Parma's superiority over Antwerp, despite the absence of their
Colombian star Asprilla, the leading scorer in the tournament.

I must admit that I decided to go at the last moment, fearing a boring game.
Nothing could have been further from the truth. Two goals in the first 15
minutes set the game alight. Parma took the lead on 10 minutes through their
captain Minotti only for ANtwerp to equalise 3 minutes later through Taeymans.
That was really Antwerp's last chance with the exception of a set piece in the
second half.

We were then treated to a display of beautiful football with both Parma
full-backs more often in enemy teritory with tantalising runs down both flanks.
Just behingd the strikers, Osio provided a diplay of Cantonesque proportions with
neat flicks, wonderful ball control and vision. When he retired midway through
the second half, the game had already been won, although the third goal didn't
come until the final minutes. (Leeds please observe that there could
be life after Eric!). In midfield Melli ran the show - showing why he has been
introduced into the Italian squad.

The game was attended by a well humoured crowd (37,000) with very few locals in sight.

oops, got cut off before finishing. I was surprised at the lack of local
interest...London radio didn't even mention the game preferring to report on
the management appointement at Wycome Wanderers who have recently taken the
heady step from part-time non-league football to the Third Division. The BBC
didn't even give the score this morning.

That's the first leg of what could be an Italian clean sweep on European
competitions this season. It's easy to see only AC, Inter and Lazio are ahead
of Parma in the best league in Europe.

I watched it on French TV and I was also very impressed and entertained by the
Parmasans (well, that's what the French commentator called them). What about
that goal chopped off for offside? As fine a goal from a set piece as you
could get, and it wasn't offside either according to the replays.

In the first 15 minutes Antwerp looked as though they were going to put on
a performance but they fell to pieces. The difference in teamwork and skill
between the teams was enormous. I don't know if Melli is regarded as a goal scorer
but last night he really should have had about two hat-tricks.

I was getting a bit worried until the Parma 3rd goal, visualizing a sneak equalizer
by Antwerp and on to a penalty shootout. There have beeen too many Euro finals in
recent years where the best team did not win. Anyway, well done Parma. Italian football
really does seem a bit special these days.

Iteresting point made by the TV commentator: apparently Parma is a town with only
200,000 inhabitants. And they have a team like this! It makes one wonder.

Glad to hear that for once a final was a real final ...
296.4NSDC::SIMPSONThe future sure isn't what it used to beFri May 14 1993 10:375
Parma have done really well in recent seasons - 3 years ago they were in the
Italian 3rd division.

It was also they that ended AC Milan's incredible run of league matches without
defeat.

> DIV 3?

Surely more then 3 years ago, I think 6.
They started to do well in div2 when the trainer
 was Arrigo Sacchi.

Parma is a city of 170000 people and the reason
of his football success is mainly due to a big
industry that transforms milk end distributes the
 derived products.

296.6CLARID::STUARTFri May 14 1993 12:584
Does Parma football club own this big milk-transfoming industry? Or is
there a millionaire owner of the industry who invest money in the club?

I'd say it would be the latter. As far as I know the club's main
sponsor is PARMALAT. I don't know if the owner of PARMALAT is the
club president, but it wouldn't surprise me.

I missed this match as the highlights were buried on BBC at some
ungodly time of night. Almost no other mention of the game even
though it was in London. Stay tuned for more parrochial ManU
    news ..
