I think its a brilliant idea having Italian football live on Chanel 4.
Instead of suffering through games like Crystal Palace vs Southampton we can
see the game as its supposed to be played - with players trying to
pass the ball to guys wearing the same colour shirt, not hoofing the
ball up to some 6'5 center forward, which is the way most of the teams
in these islands play. Maybe now young players will look up to the
likes of Ruud Gullit et al. instead of Mick McCarthy!
Thank you Channel 4.

but S.T.V will be showing Scottish football this season they have just

will also be goals from a 1st Division and 2nd Division game.

games are boring, i watched some last yr on Sky and there is passing to
the same coloured shirt Ok , the fullback givesit to the sweeper who
gives it to the othere fullback who roles it in turn to the keeper
who roles it in turn to the sweeper and we have about 1 hr 25 of this
then one player runs into the oppositions half scores a goal then it
gets really boring,
Fact the grass is greener on the other side, our football might not
be the prettiest to watch but it is the most entertaining,

boring football last season, or Juventus, or Lazio Rom, or Napoli, all of these
teams would kick ass in the premier league.... The Italian league was boring a
few years back approx 6-10, but then they started importing the creme de la

Re .14
Dear Mr Antell,
Welcome to the Football conference. I have been following your
unsuccessful attempt at provoking reactions in the Golf conference for
a while now and I must admit I have found them extremely unamusing.
Fortunately you have failed to drag that conference down to your own
level. I guess it was to be expected that you tried another hunting
ground (or is that fishing waters?)
Before you continue to litter this conference with more useless
diskfillers let me enlighten you that a certain Martin Cunniffe
(Known to himself as The Great Cunno, Angling Champion, known to
everybody else as the Great C**t) for years now has fished in these
waters, and I regret to say caught some big ones. There is also a
minority group in Scotland whose members enjoy indulging in Big Sea
Fishing, but they rarely catch anything. More often than not they get
caught by their own hooks.
In recent years the Football noters have learned to distinguish
Cunnoisms from serious entries, and I must warn you that in order to
generate any controversy in this conference you have to be far more
subtle than you have been so far. Otherwise your notes will be totally
ignored.
This is written in all friendlyness, I just don't want you to waste
any of your valuable time on a feeble cause.
Best regards,
Stefan

What Sky appear to be worried about is that the number tuning
in to watch these live games is around the 500,000 mark.
They have reason to worry because the weekly average for the
Sunday live games of last season on ITV/BBC was around 5 million.
I doubt they'll ever get these numbers either unless the price
of a dish and decoder was to come down by a huge amount.
The majority of the football loving masses in this country simply
don't have the money to lay out.

The dish and decoder aren't that expensive are they? What I object to

| I suppose this is the right place to give an opinion of "The Whole New
Ball Game" at the end of its first season?
Much to my surprise, I have been very impressed with Murdoch-Vision. I
have watched a lot more football than I used to on the box, and it has
generally been very well presented. I also (unlike most of you!) quite
like Andy Gray (When I can understand him) and reckon he is a bit like
James Hunt in his views.
Good Bits -
Having the score/time on screen all the time
The spread of matches shown - ie not always Man U, Looneypool, Arsenal
in some combination
The Footballers Football Show
The variety of studio guests (eg Bill Foulkes at the MU game last
night)
The generally very restrained commentaries
The lack of endless verbiage in the player graphics during games
The Club Show - some interesting angles for example Eagle Eye's view of
Palace
The interviews with fans and referees
The commitment to non-Prem matches, eg World Youth Cup, Eng U18,
Autoglass Trophy
The Bad Bits -
Rather gushing about non-descript games at first
The graphics for goals and at the add breaks
The Sky Strikers and Sumos
Too much intro on Sundays (2 hours is too much, the 45-60 mins on
Mondays is better)
Richard Key's jackets (By Yves St Laurent)
Ignoring the old Football League
Having to pay for it! (even tho we currently get it for around #5 a
month via cable)
Anyway, I have enjoyed it, Palace were on live, Salads Salako was kept
busy, and we'll be watching next season (assuming Palace stay up!)

Re pressure from the clubs on Sky.
You'll probably find this is the other way around. Football wouldn't
survive without the millions in dosh that Sky is pumping into it.
Sky have a big handle on the FA. and in a sport thats as much about
money as it is kicking a ball - its the man with the wallet who comes
out on top.
As for playing Thursdays, thats too close to the weekend. Saturdays
will always be big football day and some rest is required.

| Actually, football probably couldn't survive now without the money from tv.
It could have done if the ammounts hadn't become extremely silly over
the last few years, and some of them use these funds as a lifeline.
Siome of the money filters down into the lower leagues, and could you
immagine a small club suddenly getting nothing. Clubs would fold faster
than an expert at origami. I'm not saying that I agree with it. I find
the idea that some yob live Mr Vinnie Jones can earn over 3000 a week
for kicking a piece of leather around. The world of football has gone
mad and I wouldn't be surprised if the accountants decided it would be
much be much better financially if all the players were sacked, and the
accountants went out onto the pitch and compared figures to a crowd of
30,000.

| Except, that's not at all mellow, is it. Maybe it's some fancy new
trance-type-doobury. Why not pop over to UKMUSIC and ask in there.

| The following details are from the back of todays Daily Mail:
1. Sky is thought to be offering 600m for the Premiership coverage
for seasons 1997/7 - 2001/2.
2. Part of the current sky deal means that they can submit their bid
after other TV companies and they have full access to the other
bids. Apparently, ITV, BBC & Wire TV (Cable Co) privately admit
that they cannot beat Sky unless Sky decides it doesn't want to bid
for the football.
3. The Endsleigh League receives nothing from the deal at all whereas
Premiership club will get 6m a season.
4. Next season, 3 clubs go down with 3 coming up so Premiership stays
at 20. If this stays the case in season 1997/8 the Merson Cup
winners will not get a place in the UEFA Cup. A working party is
being set up to look at 2 up & 2 down in future.
5. Pay to view TV is part of the new deal so expect to have all of
Moan Utd's games televised.

Could you please explain this a little more fully. (I'm having a
rough morning. It's just taken me far to long to understand the
nature of a change in our code one of my colleagues was asking for.)

| Tony,
> Next season, 3 clubs go down with 3 coming up so Premiership stays
> at 20.
3 relegated from Premiership with 3 teams promoted which means that the
total n of teams in the Premiership will stay at 20.
> If this stays the case in season 1997/8 the Merson Cup winners will not
> get a place in the UEFA Cup
UEFA has stated that if a country has its top division with more than
18 teams, as from 1997/8 season onwards their League Cup competition
winners will not be invited into the UEFA Cup. Incidentally, the French
have just started their League Cup and have negotiated an opt out from
this clause.
>A working party is being set up to look at 2 up & 2 down in future.
The Premiership want to exclude crap like Leicester, Swindon & Ipswich
so will be making it harder for them to get promoted by reducing the n
of places available.
