209.0. "The greatest feeling of all..." by PAKORA::GMCKEE () Fri May 08 1992 01:55

How do you feel after your team has scored a goal over
there biggest rivals and how long is the celebration. ??

The reason I ask is that I have been taking some stick
over my view that there is ABSOLUTELY NO BETTER FEELING than
    Rangers scoring against Celtic.

    	Peter,
Yes I'll be back in notes for a while - when I have time.
I've been in read only mode for about a year!!!
I will be celebrating that goal til I die. It wasn't just the goal
that gave me my "greatest ever feeling" the whole day was one big
    	high.

I don't really comment on the gunners games in here as I don't get
to see them much now - my family increasing in size and all that.
The only footy I have seen live lately is a couple of treks to
Roots Hall to see Southend Utd.

Here's my greatest moments as a football fan.

1. Liverpool making it 2-0 against the Mancs to make sure that they couldn't
bridge that 25 year gap.

2. The faces of the United players leaving the field on that same day.

3. Ronnie Whelan's superb curler past Bailey in the '83 League cup final.

4. TGA's superb strike after 4 mins against Everton in the '89 cup final.

5. TGA's hat-trick against the Turks.

6. Meeting TGA at Ronnie's testimonial.

7. Hearing that TGA had equalled the Tranmere record of 40 goals.

8. Seeing TGA beat Zubbizeretta of Barcelona from just inside half-way.

9. Being at Wembley to witness TGA scoring twice against Wimbledon in '88 C.S

10. Packie's save and O'leary's goal - very original

11. Ronnie's cracker that beat Daseav in 1988 Euro C'ship

12. TGA's header that flicked the ball to Houghton to beat Shilts in '88.

13. Kenny's goal against Bruges in 1988.

14. The atmosphere in Rome for the Italy v Ireland game in June 1990.

15. Being in 1992 and not remembering the last time that the Mancs won a
league title.

re .24

That's one of my greatest moments too. Bremner was outstanding that day.

Another was Gilkes' penalty v Coventry at 10:45 Wed 2nd March 1988.

The Royals on their way to Wembley. That was a pretty special day too.

Being down at Newport when Reading won their 12th game in a row at the beginning
of the '85/'86 season. Never seen so many Reading supporters away from home.

Carrow Road 1st April 1977. First time I saw my heros ( Leeds ) with the likes of
Lorimer, Bremner, gray etc. Unfortunately we were made to look the fools with
Norwich winning 3-0. This was also my first, and still my only 1st division game.

England v Scotland 1984??

Great atmosphere, especially on the tube to the stadium. Unfortunately England
won 2 - 0.

That'll do for now.

    SCOTLAND v's ENGLAND games.

The best part about these games was the build up to them,Getting half

Werhayy! Last night myself and some chums went out for a few quiet
lagers to Pantiles in Bagshot. Someone said "Gary Linekers in the fron
bar". We said "Ohh yeaah!". "No really, hes in there". So we went and
had a look, and not only was Gary Linker there, but so was a large
proportion of the England squad. David Seaman, Rob Jones, Lee Dixon,
Mark Wright, Keith Curle, Tony Dorigo, David Batty, Paul Merson, Ian
Wright, John Barnes and Gary Lineker.

We chatted to David Seaman for quite a while. He whinged about Graham
Taylor and one of the lads asked him about the Rob Jones or Gary
Stevens thing. He rates Rob Jones highly and thinks Gary Stevens is a
poultice, but so does everyone else. Merson was propping up the bar in
the corner, and had 3 pints racked up when the bar closed at midnight.
Ian Wright was buzzing around and seemed friendly enough. In my group
of mates there is one Arsenal fan, one Tottenham and one Liverpool, and
they were straight over intro'ing themselves to Lineker, Barnes and
Merson respectively. My jaw was on the floor. After a few shakes of the
old hands we left them to it.

Also, this now means I've had a wee stood next to Keith Curle, Ray
Houghton and Dennis Wise (at different times of course). Please note, I
shook their hands before they went. Is this some sort of record?

The greatest feeling of all 1. Listening to the Killie v QOS on the
radio, Kilmarnock needed to win 5-0 to stay up,if Clyde could only draw
guess what Killie won 5-0 ,,,,,,but with 8mins of injury time played
Clyde are still drawing 1-1...9mins of injury time gone and Clyde score
,,,,2-1 ,,,,,the final whistle goes,,,,,Killie are down,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Sorry Sal but a couple of corrections are necessary there.

    1. If Clyde won 1-0, Killie had to win 6-0
    2. Killie won 6-0 Clyde won 2-0.
    3. Doug Barron of St Johnstone handled the ball after 96 minutes to
give McGlashan the chance to make it 2-0, which he did.
    4. Kilmarnock were relegated with the highest ever points total and by
       only goal.

Still, the feeling was probably the same !!

But isn't it a pity that gave you the better feeling ??

I'd prefer the last minute winner from Cally at Greenock or Shaggy and
Ally scoring at Dundee in the Skol.

Being at Palmerston as I was for that fateful Killie game I can
guarantee that the total high that we got for about 5 mins after our
final whistle and before the ref at the Clyde game decided to play
'next goals the winner' would be miles ahead of any smug feeling that
you ayr chappies might have got. Mind you, the total depths of despair
that we felt as we stood on the park celebrating as the news from the
clyde game filtered through might have been the world's lowest feeling.

Thanks Kev for your help,my memory sometimes lets me down..
As for the highs you mentioned i.e Cally's goal at Morton bla bla,
these can only be described as okay when compaired to other highs in
other seasons..i.e stuffing the Gers 3-0 and Doyle showing his
    whatsname to the Rangers fans.
The point I was making about Killie's slump to div 2 was that as
an "honest" man I totally despise cheating, and the 6-0 carve up at
Palmerston ,by the worst Killie team in 100years ,was quite clearly
cheating at its worst. So I found it rather funny when their dirty deed
was done ,Killie found themselves still relegated because Clyde (injury
time penalty specialists for about 3 weeks prior)had cheated to a
    higher degree.

Aye , right enough Sal, Fat Willie Watters scoring 5 against anybody,
even "An all-time worst incompetent Brownies Select XI" would be hard
to believe, So cheating was the order of the day.

I was there at the 3-0 stuffing of Rangers and a certain Ally Dawson
left the park not knowing what day it was after Doyle had left him
totally bewildered. If my (fading) memory serves me right, it was
Rangers first defeat of the season and they had beaten St Etienne in

re 39 Taking nothing away from reading that day. You deserved it. I am
amused that over the years the estimates of the percentage Reading
supporters made up in the crowd is assumimg the order of an urban myth.
I think we started off with a reasonable 50-50 split I now find that in

I was there unfortunately the game finished before I was able to count

At the time, it was reported that about 40,000 Reading fans were at
Wembley that day, making up around 60% of the crowd. As a fairly "loyal
Royal" myself (ie I go when I'm not playing), what really peeved me was
just how quickly this "support" disappeared again. A couple of weeks
after that game we were at home to Barnsley; it was a wet day and the

The greatest feeling had to be when Brian Gayle scored the O.G. that fateful
Sunday for Leeds. It was destined to be Leeds' day after that incident. Nothing
MUFC could do then could avert the certainty that Leeds were going to win
the league.

No one except myself and a few others dared believe that Leeds could win the
league. We showed them that day!

I bet you'll be terribly disappointed Gary, but next season the brick
wall will be hidden behind several rows of seats. And even the Luton
fans will have a roof over their heads in the away end.

    Dave,
Yes very true indeed. I take it you were only refering to the
defending goalmouth, your comments however typically applied to both
goalmouths whenever Luton took to the field last year.

Watching Thomas Brolin NOT get a penalty at the end of the first half
when he was tripped in the area.
It served him right, if you leap 15 feet in the air everytime an
opposing defender comes within 5 feet of you, how can you expect the
ref to take you seriously when you ARE fouled?
    i laughed and laughed.

re .56

But if you play your football in Italy (he plays with Parma doesn't he)
that becomes an unbreakable habit.

The greatest feeling of all was actually last winter when Arsenal
were getting beaten by Benfica (yes, yes Portuguese I know) and in extra time
some Benfica guys gets tripped and starts rolling over and over and over and
over...writhing and squirming in 'agony', when one of the Arsenal players comes
over and rolls him off the sideline!

Priceless!!
