160.0. "Football Journalism" by SUBURB::INV_LIBRARY (Who hell he?!?) Thu Feb 20 1992 16:43

This topic is for the discussion of football jounalism. Examples of
both good and bad writing will be welcome plus any discussion of how
journalism and journalists affect the game (I'm referring to TV and
radio as well as the papers).

This is prompted by an appalling piece of "journalism" I read yesterday
in the Daily Mirror by so-called football writer Harry Harris. In it,
he launched a scathing (and in my view quite disgusting) attack on
Graham Taylor, saying that he had ruthlessly dumped Lineker from the
England team and implying that he had been betrayed by the manager. It
was obvious that the whole article was purely a venomous attack as
there was no basis for it whatsoever; indeed, I'm sure that if Taylor
had picked Lineker, Harris would have written an article condemning him
for not experimenting with new strikers.

In my view this kind of "journalism" does nothing but harm to the game.

    What say you?

Didn't read it, but if it's true I'd have to agree. Amazing how some
people get their kicks really, isn't it ? As if we didn't know already,
there isn't a journalist in the land who couldn't do the manager's job
    better, right ? !!

    Agreed.

We suffer the same type of journalism in Scotland. One particular guy
called Alex "Candid" Cameron (sic) has a particular talent for missing
the point and filling endless columns with very little of interest to
the paper buying public. The rest are just as bad and rarely tackle the
real issues of the game. They are all scared to criticise a referee or
a player for a bad display but never miss the chance to sink the boot
into a manager when his team are struggling (witness the recent sacking
of Alex Smith, the first Aberdeen manager to be sacked, this being
brought on by a paper campaign as much as by bad results)

TV reporters are just as bad. We have a rival to Motson and Coleman in
Jock Brown of BBC Scotland. Last night against N.I. he said after a
shot from Durie had slipped past the post, " If That had been in, the
goalie would've been in trouble" Very Good Jock, now go and lie down..

To be honest, zi best Football mag in the world is

    				FRANCE FOOTBALL

I've read lots of footy mags in several countries (USA, Ireland, UK,
Germany, Italy, Spain) and they look to me their public is young boys
    or morons, or both.

France Football is decent, well-informed, international. Try to get a
copy, even if you can't read French, you'll see what I mean.

Tabloid, weekly, thick, 12 Francs an issue (1 20 pence).

On the subject of Harry Harris, here's a few quotes from Wednesday's
    paper:

"England captain Gary Lineker was brutally and ruthlessly axed by
    manager Graham Taylor last night."
"No amount of sympathy wrapped up in Taylor's perfectly delivered
explanation of "logic" can disguise the hurtful truth."
"Taylor's decision to drop Lineker ranks alongside his controversial
move in dropping Paul Gascoigne for the qualifying tie against the
    Republic of Ireland in Dublin."
"Lineker is not the first superstar to be discarded by the ruthless
    streak in Taylor."
"His goal takes Taylor and England to Sweden. His reward - the axe."

And then, as if by magic, from Thursday's paper:

"Saint Taylor was the real winner as his controversial axing of Gary
Lineker turned out to be inspired. It was one in the eye for Taylor's
critics who questioned the England manager's sanity for dispensing with
one of the world's deadliest scorers."

Yes, all these quotes are from the same man!

Unfortunately, the ONLY rule which these writers adhere to is that they must
sell papers. Truth and/or objectivity has nothing to do with it - much too
'boring'. If they can sell papers by printing lies and speculation then
they'll do it.

At least that gives us a reply - don't buy them!!

Actually I don't buy the Mirror (my old man does), but there are
millions who do. I simply believe that this type of "journalism" is
totally destructive and harmful to the game in general. For instance,
the sort of campaign the tabloids waged against Bobby Robson did the
England team no good whatsoever and I would hate to see Taylor undergo
    the same trial.

As a further example, Harris writes yesterday:

"..the only slight problem for Taylor will be that England will now
leap ahead of the French as the favourites for the European
    Championships."

This kind of raising of false expectations is done specifically for the
purpose of shooting them down if they fail. This kind odf garbage can,
    and does, destroy careers.

The Grauniad is usually ggod for fair football journalism. Mondays
edition is the one to get for the weekend reviews, which usually leads
with david Lacey's comments. There none of this bold typing of words to
try to make a point like some of the tabloids. Whichever paper allowed
the infamous Emlyn Hughes comments should be banned from every football
ground in the land .. as that was 'journalism' at its worst.

The Emlyn Hughes episode was in the Mirror; strictly speaking, any part
of the media that allows Emlyn Hughes to air his views ought to be
    immediately taken out of circulation.

A further point about football reports in the tabloids is that they
rarely tell you what happened in the game; most of the report is taken
up with managers' comments and opinions about how the 'star' players
    performed.

On the subject of the Gruaniad, Stephen Bierley is an excellent
football writer; amusing as well as informative.

I normally like Lacey and his colleagues writings, but he has a hatred of
Palace which is probably born out of being a Seaweed fan. Harry Harris of
the Mirror lives within gobbing distance of "the Mecca" and he too has a
a big hang-up about the F.E's - but there again he's a Tottenham fan.

cant say Ive noticed his (Lacey) anti-Palace comments (except for their
FA Cup final replay last year, where they kicked everything but the
ball )...but then again Lacey usually comments on the big game(s) of the
    previous weekend.......

160.16The Faber Book on FootballULYSSE::CHAMPOLLIONric leads LeedsFri Mar 13 1992 16:4119
    I bought a book called

                        'The Faber book on Football".

has a green jacket, couple pictures on it with George Best, Adams and
Gazza, and the Hand of God. Only Pel is there to remember us that
football is played inother countries :-0)

Apart from that it's excellent stuff. It traces all kinds of newspaper
stories, books, essays etc. through history. One of the first pieces is
about "The death of the Game Football" pronounced in 1862 or whenabouts
and goes to the World Cup in Italy.

I started reading backwards, with interviews of Barnes and Waddle... a
piece on English thugs in Turin (frightening).

Worth every penny. Can be found everywhere I would think.

I couldn't find an obvious place to put this - hopefully the mods
will move it if it needs to:

I just got hold of the Observer newspaper dated Mar 15th and there's
an article on page 2 entitle "Red Card"

"A soccer fan, Richard Shaw, 29 of Sheffield, who dropped his trousers
and danced in front of women at a London tube station, was banned by
Horseferry Road magistrates, London, yesterday from every football
match in the country for a year"

Apart from it being funny I guess I don't understand how an offence
committed at a tube station is punished by a ban from football.

What next? Parking tickets that ban you from cup games?

    Regards,
