All you have to do to find out who is on the box, generally speaking,
is perm any combination of: both of the North London mobs, both scouser
teams, and the Mancs, regardless of how they are playing or where they
are in the league!
Fan of none of the above.

You're right. We've had English league game of the week here for the
last few years and its seems the teams you mentioned are most often
in the spotlight. Then again, why shouldn't they? They are the best
teams. In addition, its big business and the larger the audience the
bigger the paycheck. People like me that will watch a football game
at any chance, don't care about any particular club (Most of the time).
I've hated Liverpool since I was a kid and yet sat and watched them
many times because they played great, exciting football.

| Re:last
I would question your word 'best teams'.
If you mean their league position, then they certainly are not the BEST
teams, perhaps teams with greatest tv pulling power, but certainly NOT
best performing. For once this season, the Mancs can justify their tv
appearance on performances, but in the past this has not been so. All
you end up with is the bigger clubs getter the coverage, while the
smaller, better placed league-wise, getting almost nothing.
The Super league will fix this, whearby the clubs at the top get the
bulk of the tv coverage and money, instead it going by who the club is!

94.6 | | TOTH::CHAVES | | Fri Sep 27 1991 19:54 | 14 |
| You make a good point. In the final analysis, however, it is the size
of the TV audience that dictates the fee the clubs, leagues, etc.
receive and because footballing enterprises rely on international
telecasts for significant amounts on money, clubs such as the Mancs
will appear often simply because they have world-wide appeal/support.
One way of ensuring fair coverage is to do what the NFL does:
Each league club receives an equal share of the TV revenues. This
applies to national telecasts, only. individual teams have their
own cable and local telecast contracts.

94.7 | A fairer deal? | WELCLU::NELSON | things that make you go hmmmn | Mon Sep 30 1991 12:39 | 14 |
| I think that the new super league starting next season will be fairer
to all teams whether their on the box or not.
As far as I understand, the new system for spliting the tv dosh is;
50% of the tv money is evenly split between all 22 clubs.
25% " " " " to the better placed clubs in the table.
25% " " " " split between whoever is actually being televised.
This is far better than at present where all the money goes to clubs
that only appear on tv, which as we both know is the usual bunch!
This wont stop the boring old games still being televised, but at least
everyone gets a slice of the money.

94.8 | Even payouts = better games | GEMVAX::HILL | | Mon Sep 30 1991 18:02 | 11 |
| How do you definte "the better placed clubs in the table"? This does
put a little incentive for mid-table teams to cross the magic line.
Considering that the top handful will be playing in European cups they
would get a little more from the league. In a lot of ways it makes
sense to divvy up the TV money a little more evenly. If a smaller club
has a little more money coming in they can now buy/develop better quality
players, resulting in more parity. More parity in the league means more
close matches and potential for upsets, which all translate into more
entertaining football.

Quite simply, 'the better placed clubs' means, the higher in the table
a club is the more tv money it gets, and better chance of appearing on
the box. This is what clubs like mine have been waiting for, now the
incentives are their to be as high in the table as poss, week in week
out, in the knowledge of a fairer deal tv wise.

They only report FA Cup results and totally ignore League or League Cup

their part? I suspect the latter as BBC radio and BBC's partner, Sky,
give a full results service in their bulletins.

the League and League Cup. BSB also has rights to ZDS and Autoglass
games - the ZDS won't be there next season, the Autoglass trophy will
still be there.
Tonight, the Beeb is showing highlights of the Mancs and the Saints,
and 10.10 pm, BSB is showing the game live.
I find BSB live coverage better than ITV / BBC, especially the 1/2 hour

94.45 | Quality of Coverage | CODS::D_DALY | | Thu Sep 16 1993 11:56 | 28 |
| I had quite forgotten how bad ITV coverage of live football was. As a SKY Sports
subscriber I had become used to lengthy (if not always quality) pre, inter
and post match analysis. The memories of those live ITV matches on sundays when
they promised in depth comments from the guest after each break to return with some
inane question and answer followed by another ad break had nearly dissappeared
from my memory but last night brought it all back.
At half time there was a long ad break followed by a quick comment from ST.Glen
Hoddle followed by another long ad break. The match itself finished at around
8:50 with coverage due to end at 9 oclock so they took another break followed by
a comment from Mr. H and ended without even reviewing the goals. Then there was
another ad break before Coronation Street which started on time at 9.
The highlights later on were just as bad. The commentator on the Arsnal game was
an Ian Wright groupie. The match analysis was short and humourless and lacked any
depth and steered clear of criticism. The anchor man was the same guy who covers the
athletics on ITV.
Sky sports has its weaknesses and Andy Gray can be a right asshole at times but
there is an attempt to analyse the weak and strong ponts of teams and there is
a sense of humour. While there are just as many ad breaks in the coverage they
allow time for the guests to earn their money.
I also see that ITV have copied the clock and score display idea.

derek.

With ITV is a compact coverage you saw the goals plenty of replays etc etc..

Yes, I agree, we are all at the mercy of the Global Media Thugs.
Satellite/Cable TV in the UK has not be welcomed with open arms as the
likes of Murdoch, etc. expected. They offer extremely poor general
programming and then snaffle, with the collaboration of the BBC, the
rights to screen the (English, not sure about rest of UK) premier league
football and charge extra for it.
As far as I am aware, the monies raised from subscription to Sky Sports
comes nowhere near the amount they spend on coverage and it's kept afloat
(unlike BSB and its proprietor ;-)) by the extremely huge wallet of
Murdoch (or maybe his employees' pension fund ;-)). This is obviously in
the hope that Joe Public will eventually say 'Oh well, it's only XX per
month, I might as well subscribe...'.
I know I would rather save the money and go see a game on Saturday
afternoon near to home, irrespective of who's playing, once or twice a
month, than (eventually) line the pockets of Murdoch and his share-holders.
However, if you don't subscribe to Canal+ you still have to watch the
grubby films in 'wobble-vision' ;-).

Steve.

That just shows hopw crap the game was in those days. It's much faster and
better nowadays. You don't get bloaty old folks playing until they're 97 like
you seemed to in the 70s. I'd have probably ended up liking rugby if I'd been
watching telly then. Desperate.

| Apart from "Supermac's" sideburns the most hillarious image from last
nights show was the invasion of the "Parka Youth" on the two occasions
when Hereford scored.
Delightful coats were'nt they? Green was definitely the colour on this
occasion, with a red lining topped off with that distinctive fur trimmed
hood. I had a penchant for the dark blue range me-self. It complimented
my high waisters and wedge shoes and I have to say that with my vinyl
addidas bag I must have like a complete and utter prat as I walked to
school of a morning.

94.76 | Anyone else ever see "Southern Soccer"? | VARESE::TRNUX1::IDC_BSTR | Oh no! NOT Milan Kundera again! | Thu Aug 03 1995 16:01 | 20 |
| One of my least fond (unfondest?) childhood memories is of the
"Southern Soccer" programme that used to be shown in the south-east on
Sunday afternoons. We in Brighton, for some reason, used to get the
London "The Big Match" programme most of the time. However, about once
in every 7 or 8 Sundays, we'd get lumped with "Southern Soccer"...so
instead of Chelsea v. Leeds, it'd be Reading v. Exeter or Aldershot v.
Barrow.
My brother and I would race through the Sunday washing up and take our
places in front of the telly with baited breath. The music that
accompanied Southern Soccer was a bit like the music for the Hovis
advert, and put me off brass bands for life. And the whole aura of
Southern Soccer was epitomized by this balding midfield player called
Kettleborough who played for Portsmouth (or was it Bournemouth?
Reading?). Absolutely useless he was, too.
Probably not even good enough to make our Baldies XI, come to think of
it.

| Did anyone else watch `Kicking and Screaming' on BBC2 last night????
Probably not because it was screened at the same time as Lady Di's
interview, but it was a cracking good programme which looked at the
history of hooliganism and compared the grounds pre-Hillsborough to today.
It amazed me that fans could have put up with such treatment over the
years. Herded like animals, although a few of those people in the
programme last night deserved no better.
I had forgotten the scenes from the 86 Cup final, (Liverpool v Everton),
with blokes jumping from the top of the Wembley gates and grabbing
their mates hands who were hanging from the 2nd storey windows to try get
into Wembley. Lunatics!!

It was an excellent series. Last night it looked as if Dein was going
to be asked about whether he thought the bond scheme had been a
success. He would probably have replied 'Yes' but there you go. Thank
christ I don't sit in the North Bank Stand on a regular basis. The live
band would drive me nuts. I might go to one of the Ladbrokes booths and
ask if they are taking bets as to how long before someone decks the
band members in the name of good music.

| I sat down last night to watch the video of `Best night'....
What a player! What a man!. To summarise, it was mainly about Best but
there was also an excellent program about ManU during the `lean' 26
years between league triumphs....
Best thought that his greatest goal was against Chelsea, (strong run
from midfield, surviving a `Chopper' Harris hospital tackle, rounding
the keeper and scoring)....They showed ManU hammering Benfica 5-1 in
Lisbon in the 66 European Cup, supposedly Best's greatest game and
Michael Parkinson interviewed him on his 50th birthday....
And Best is now married to a 23-year-old blonde babe! As everyone keeps
saying to him, "Where did it all go wrong?.."
Tommy Docherty came out of the ManU program very badly, (his treatment
of Willie Morgan was a disgrace), and Best was not too complimentary
about him either....
All in all, a great night's TV....

Morgan's side of the story....
There was a summer to Australia (I think), and Docherty told Morgan
that he didn't have to go on this tour, that he should take a holiday
or something like that. Next morning's newspaper headlines...
`MORGAN REFUSES TO GO ON TOUR' and he's shown the exit door....
Docherty refutes this account, (well he would, wouldn't he?)

can't speak for the poor souls who wanted to watch from grass-level down at

What I still don't understand is - why weren't the 'crush-barriers' staggered
so you couldn't go more than a few yards? Maybe it would be more dangerous to
have lots of people pushed into them?

re: standing on the Kop
A movement of about 10 rows was pretty normal. The secret was to stand
in front of a barrier. What happens is that you cannot see as the ball
approached the goal (especially in the 2nd half) and you stood on
tip-toes. This made it rather unstable and everyone fell forward.
People who fainted or got crushed were passed down to the St John's
medics over everybody's heads, which was very effective but a bit scary
for the casualty.
