Now that the F.A. cup is beginning to 'hot-up' I thought I'd
post the First round results from 26-Nov-1991:-
	FIRST ROUND
		WINDSOR & E	2	4	WOKING
	1st ROUND REPLAYS
		CREWE 5	3	CARLISLE
		FARNBORO'	4	0	HALESOWEN
		GILLINGHAM	1	3	BRENTFORD
		HEREFORD	3	0	ATHERSTONE
		TELFORD 2	1	STOKE
	**	ROTHERHAM	3	3	SCUNTHORPE
				7	6
** Rotherham won after penalties decided the result...
What does everyone feel about the re-introduction of the
penalty shoot-out decision in the F.A. cup..?
I think the shoot-out decision method was last used around 120 years
	ago in this tournament..!
I did feel that last years F.A. cup did begin to grow a little
tiresome for players and fans, with regards to the excessive
number of replays that were needed to decided the results....
However, I do feel that using penalty shoot-out's at this
early stage in the tournament can be the only solution........
Although how fans may feel after their club's been knocked out
in the latter rounds by penalties will be interesting..!
				Cheers Al.

I think using the spot kick method to finalise results in replay's is
fine up until the semi-final stage, but from then on, I think a second
replay is necessary. After going so far I don't think any supporter
would be happy about his/her team losing on penalty's. We all know how
it feels - England (Italia '90).

| 80.19 | Famous victory (just) | FORTY2::ETHERIDGE | Blimey....with a big B. | Wed Dec 18 1991 11:24 | 30 |
| | Farnborough 4(2) - Torquay 3(0)
Torquay made all the early work, and had a couple of chances, then
Dean Coney (ex Fulham and other big clubs) scored what looked a good
shot after some scrappy play. Then Simon Read races away for a second,
and suddenly Torquay, after looking in control, are 2-0 down. Deep joy.
The gravity of Torquays situation being neatly summed up by a chap stood
near us. "They'll need to score 3 to win now", and you know, he'd hit
the nail right on the head.
Second half Torquay came out fighting, and it was sand bags and
barbed wire stuff for the Farnborough boys. The keeper made a couple
of good saves, then spilt one but the Torquay lads couldnt capitalise.
Next Simon Read races away down the right and crosses for Doherty
unmarked to head home and leave the chaps in a state of euphoria on
the temporary terrace. A safe position we all thought; surely made
even safer when, errm, number 4 popped a looping header in to
seal it. Well not quite. Torquay could have layed down and said
"sod this" but no. Lightning war ensued, with crosses raining like
things that rain in. I quipped "A quick 4 and we're back in it",
a favourite gag on Sunday mornings, but Torquay meant it and scored 3
and should have had 4 at least. Farnboroughs sandbags and barbed wire
lay in tatters and in the end Torquay had enough chances to win it.
However Farnborugh held on, and its now off to Upton Park to get
mashed up by the Hammers. If they play like they did in the last 20
my game plan would be dont bother going. Still a great result.

With a maximum of ten 1st Div. teams to possibly progress to the
5th Round, is this the year for a 2nd Div. winner?

Only two 1st Div. teams are gauranteed a place, with Chelsea v.
Everton and Southampton v. Man Utd. Several of the remainder have
    	some tricky ties in prospect..

    	ie.	Sheff. Utd @ Chalton
    		Wednesday v. Middlesboro'
    		Norwich v. Millwall
    		Notts County v. Blackburn

Liverpool and Villa have no easy task either. Probably only Forest
and West Ham will fancy themselves to get through without too much
    	trouble.

This season's FA Cup could well provide a surprise line-up in the
final with 5 of the top 10 in the 1st Div. already out..

Apart from Le Tissier Southampton could have been one of Bassets or
Howes teams. "Get the ball up front as quickly as possible" is the nice
way of putting it. United weren't much better, but at least carved out
some chances in the second half. Pallister should really have walked
for that ridiculous retaliation near the end. Ince was unlucky when he

Well if Brian Clough is ever going to win the FA Cup this will
be his best chance. No Leeds, Man Utd, Arsenal, Spurs, Man City,

| 80.47 | Darren Anderton for England??? | FORTY2::ROBERTSON | That's me in the corner | Thu Feb 27 1992 18:57 | 27 |
| | RE: Boro v Pompey
The first half was very even. Boro went ahead ( Can't remember the goal - there
were 21 last night ;-) ) the pompey equalised through a great move between
Anderton & Clark, with Clark putting the ball away.
Boro retook the lead with the No 9. getting a free header from a corner for his
2nd goal. (What is his name???)
Pompey's second equaliser was superb. Anderton got the ball in the area with his
back to the goal. Controlled it and took the ball to the byline, then whipped in
a low cross which Clark put past the keeper at the near post with Lineker like
accuracy.
The 2nd half wasn't as memorable. Anderton scored directly from a corner, the
ball going through 2 defenders before going in.
Anderton then made it 4 with a blistering low volley from the edge of the area.
Clark could ( and should ) have had 2 more, a 1 on 1 with the keeper went wide,
and a chip hit from 6 yards hit the bar, and he had 1 disallowed.
In summary Pompey looked very good going forward and deserved their win.
Anderton definitely won't be at Fratton park for much longer if he carries
on the way he is. On last night's performance I'd put up along Giggs &
Mcbananaman.

    Three other methods for getting tickets;

i - Book a 'cup final weekend holiday' - loads of foreign holiday
    companies do them nowadays.

ii - Be a 'prominent member' of some obscure football association -
they normally get at least one ticket per League.

iii - Make friends with that well known ticket 'distributor' - Bobby
    Charlton.....

But seriously, the cup final ticket allocation has always been a joke -
the clubs only used to get 25,000 tickets each when Wembley held
100,000 - I hate to think what it would be now. The majority of tickets
go to organisations affiliated to the FA.

| | Brian,
I think the noter in .74 is referring not to the quality of Rushes
penalty but to the way it made its way into the net due to the
appalling state of the pitch. He did not hit it well and could have
bounced anywhere on that pudding. I for one noticed two players
    slipping during their run ups.

I think had you polled all footy fans as to where they believed the
replay should have been held 99% would not have said Villa Park due to
    its present condition.

Only the F.A. could have made such an idiotic decision, and one which

| | Peterborough & Kingstonian have been told to play their 1st round replay again.
This is because during the first replay, a "Fan" threw a coin at the K's
goalkeeper, when the score was 3-0, causing him to have to leave the field.
Peterborough went on to win 9-1.
The FA ruled that the injury to the keeper changed the outcome of the game and
ordered the game to be replayed.
Chris Kelly, the K's manager, thought that the result should have stood, as Posh
were already in control of the game at the time of the incident, and he could
have trouble getting a squad, as some players aren't sure if they can get the
extra time off work.
The game is to be played behind closed doors on friday at 2pm

Re -1. Too True. Did you see the Wimbledon owner on TV the other day (Sam
Hassam?). He reckoned that "everyone" in the game loved Wimbledon for what
they had achieved as a liitle minnow up against the big fish, and indeed they
were an inspiration to every small businessman in the country (cough splutter
pass the sick bag). My only question to him is : if a team makes no pretence
or desire to play anything like attractive football, and indeed nobody wants
to watch them whther they do or not, and you're losing 100,000 pounds a day
trying - then.... WHY BOTHER!??!!

| | I don't like Wimbledon as much as the next man, but I just wish that
everyone would leave them alone because they are "one of the smaller
    clubs".

Wimbledon have acheived their success by playing the long ball game and
though not very attractive, no one can deny them there place in the
Premier or the FA Cup 5th Round.

According to all reports of the Villa game they deserved to win and
Villa were lucky to even get to penalties.

I think the message their chairman was trying to get accross the other
night was that they are a small club who have sell players just to stay in
business!!! That couldn't and wouldn't happen in countries like Italy
    and Spain.

Liverpool and Manchester United supporters can't even manage to understand
what that must mean and I also think that Gary Lineker's comments the
other day on Match of the Day were a little bit out of order.

I just look forward to Wimbledon beating Tottenham on Sunday.

Wimbledon are always looked down on for not playing attractive football
but there are other teams like Man. Utd. who don't exactlty set the place
alight either. Wimbledon are not on their own and too many people are
criticising them at the moment. They have won as many leagues as some of the
other big teams over the last 25 or 26 years.
They can't be all bad players when other clubs have spent approx. 12 million
pounds on Wimbledon players over the last few years. Man City spent 5 million
on Curle and Phelan, Wise & Beasant for 1 million each, etc. They also have
players on the fringe of English squads (if that means anything) like
Robbie Earle & Warren Barton who will also go for big sums.

A confident prediction, as this game doesn't kick off for another 7 hours or so.
Should read
Sheffield Utd or Blackburn v. Sheffield Wednesday or Derby County

| | Actually, it should read:

Blackburn or Sheff.Utd vs. Derby or Sheff.Wed.

I think the convention is that you always put first the home team from
    the previous round.

Plenty more worthless info where that came from.

Talking of the ticket allocation, I wonder if the Arsenal Management
Will use their own registration scheme as a basis for the cup game, ie the people
in the scheme would have preference over the general public.
Of course I being one of those privelged few!! 8^)

Technically, it was an own goal. The ball hit the crossbar and bounced
away from the goal line. Only the ball hitting Woods' leg caused the
    goal. Good shot though.

I remember a few years ago, John Fashanu hit a shot against the crossbar,
the ball rebounded off the Newcastle (Martin Thomas) keeper's head and
went in. That was credited as an own goal too.

    Useless information:
According to my Geoffrey Green bible, the 5th round was the last 16 for
    the first time in 1925.

    Even more useless information:
Manchester City celebrated (5th round/1925) by beating Palace 11-4, but
the record books prefer to show a subsequent 10-1 v. Swindon as their
    record cup win.

apparently Arsenal will not entertain any non season ticket holders

I seem to remember reading in the papers that the FA are seriously
thinking of moving the Cup final and England home matches away
	from Wembley.
Which got me musing that this could be the last year that the cup
final is played at Wembley and the likely participants are the
two that fought out the first Wembley cup final. Hopefully, it
will be 2-0 to West Ham this time.

contract for somewhere to the tune of 50 million. The contract is due
to end in the year 2002, so that gives the FA 8 years to build a new
footballing superstadium, where they may as well base their
headquarters. Somewhere in the midlands would be best, as it allows
people in the north an easier chance to see the national team and cup

Arsenal......of course it's all coming flooding back..

It was Arsenal's third consecutive final having won 3-2 against Man U
the previous year and being beaten 1-0 by Ipswich the year before that.

It was West Ham's third cup triumph having beat Fulham 2-0 in the 1975
final and Preston 3-2 in the 1964 final. However the Hammers have also
tasted defeat in the cup against Bolton in 1923....The 1964 final was
said to have been the best cup final since Old Carthusians beat Old
Etonians 3-0 in the 1880 game.. By coinsidence the scoreline was also
the the same as the 1896 game when Aston Villa beat Everton by a 3-2
    scoreline...

Prediction For the F.A.Cup Final on Sat. 20th May 1995,
     between Everton and Man Utd...........

         EVERTON 2 V MAN UTD. 1

A small wager is going on this correct score(maybe) with Paul Rideout
     scoring the first goal.

    Not bad.

You didn't say when Rideout would score the first (and only) goal. ;-)
I hope you bet on the result and not the score.

| | Sixth round draw

    Sheffield Wednesday v Wimbledon

Portsmouth v Leicester City or Chelsea

Derby County or Coventry City v Middlesbrough

    Chesterfield v Wrexham

The most intruiging thing has to be the last game, a Div 2 side in
round 7!!! The only other non premiership side is little old
    Portsmouth, hurrah!

    Alen.
