Barnsley are a good second division team, as they have proved
recently by beating Newcastle 3-0 and Grimsby 4-1.

Yup - 1 Yorkshire - Leeds and (speaking quieley) 1 Lancashire - Burnley.
(Burnley was the nearest club to my home village of Giggleswick, and
also my dad followed their fortunes. Leeds, they were Yorkshire, and
the the easiest to get to on the train - the line from Skipton to Colne

Yes, the station is now at Ingrow West on the K&WVLR, and there is a
long tunnel on the Leeds and Liverpool canal.

Foulridge is real 'Border Country' - I remember going to see my Uncle
who was headmaster at Kelbrook Prinmary School, and he pointed towards
'Darkest Lancashire' 200 yards down the road near the old Stone Trough

    EXACTLY!
so, Andy, stop taking the mickey cos i support Barnsley too!
after all, i cant help NOT being born in Liverpool.
you might say, well, why do you support Liverpool then?
i learned this weekend that the reason that i started to support the
pool was because they were against Man United in the '77 cup final
(when i was a mere 6 years old) and i have ALWAYS hated Man United,
so i supported them and was upset when they lost.

Russel Harty taught at the school 1964-1966, I just missed being taught

reasonable result, that Nogan chappie scored a well deserved equaliser
after Watfords early pressure had been absorbed by the Barnsley
defence. Barnsley broke out to take the lead with a goal from Mark
Robinson. Watford came back with Nogans goal but it was the Watford
Keeper James who kept a point for the home side with a string of good
saves as the reds finished the stronger side.

Barnsley continued their recent run of form (5 wins out of last 6?)
with a somewhat suprising defeat of league leaders Blackburn.
And i missed the chance to go :-(
Blackburn took the lead in the 28th minute through Shearer but Barnsley
levelled after about 60 minutes and Rammell hit the winner 18 minutes
    from time.
it seems to me that Barnsley either start the season well and finish
badly or start the season badly and finish well! if they could get the
two together i think they could have a good chance of promotion.
staying up there would be a different matter, but they seem to raise
their game to higher opposition...(and lower it to lower opposition :-)

An ex-TOBY TYKE,now living on foreign shores, found great delight upon
finding a conference on the Super Reds. Then great dissapointment to
find it was a few years since anyone wrote in it.A lot of things have
happened since the last note,A new manager,A new stand,a new team, and
the same results. As the season nearly closes, and the Reds looks like
they are going to be in the first division at least one more season,is
there any body out there in the great Digital world who would like a
    chat about it all.

"Battling Barnsley", as the Chronicle so often refer to them, are on
a bit of a roll at the moment. They managed to go down 1 nil to Palace
but that's not too bad - considering. They beat Sunderland by 4 goals
to nil a while back, which marked the turning point of Barnsleys
season. They have clawed their way up to 6th(?) from bottom, with games
in hand and look certain to maintain their mid_to_bottom of the 1st
division domination for yet another year.

I don't support them (my wife does), but I do like to see them do well,
as long as they aren't playing The Owls that is.

If you missed the first leg it was Darlington away which ended 2-2
after Barnsley were leading 2-0.The return leg at Oakwell, reached an
exciting climax and ended after extra time 0-0.Barnsley going through
    on away goals rule.
This brings me onto what everyone at Barnsley always talks about, the
ability to turn it on,and get results against the good top teams, but
flop miserably against the bottom poor teams.Just think when Barnsley
finally get into the premier league, they'll win every match (apart from
Wimbeldon, coventry, and the likes) then tear Europe apart winning
everything in sight. The bigger the team the bigger the thrashing.
What an awesome thought, come on you Reds!

Barnsley aquitted themselves very well and at times made Newcastle look
a bit shaky. Redfearn scores after 20 mins, the first time that
Newcastle have been 1-0 down this season.

Should be a good return match at Oakwell in front of a capacity crowd
no doubt. I wonder if the toon army have decided which 5 of their number
are taking the away allocation of tickets?

Is Malky Shotton still playing for you's or is he just coaching now??

He had a great rapport with the fans & the players up here, a lot of
the fans were unhappy when he left.
I'll tell you we could do with him back just now to get us out the rot
we're in.seemingly it was him that ran the show & Stainrod didnt have
much to do with the coaching side of the game.

Well, I went to see Barnsley play Pompey while I was back for Easter.
8 quid for the cheap seats! The weather was foul. I was sat towards the
visitors end of the "covered" seating of the new stand. The cheap
seats don't afford much protection however, and I was soon regretting
    not bringing an anorak(!).
The game was just as foul as the weather, it was a bit like watching
a sunday league match. Barnsley won 1-0, and all the other results
went our way, to lift us briefly into a play-off position.
Monday at Grimsby brought the boys back down to earth though, despite
dominating the second half Grimsby's 3rd minute goal was enough to
    earn them the points.
Saturday saw 'boro at Oakwell, the points were shared. Which
realistically means the end of Barnsleys play-off hopes. We now have to
rely on one of the other teams (Reading probably) slipping up, and
have to win all remaining matches. Sheff Utd, Southend and Oldham to
    go - not easy games.

In the Chronicle there was a lot of speculation that The Owls were
after Danny Wilson. Both Barnsley and Wednesday are denying it but...
The Owls chairman was apparantly at Oakwell for the Middlesborough
match too, so there might be some truth in it.

This is presumably the same ( Meet ) Danny Wilson, who was responsible
for the 80's seminal pop classic, "Mary's Prayer".

    Stuart,

You are quite correct, following in the footsteps of Kevin Keegan and
'Hoddle and Waddle' the great Danny Wilson took time off from playing
for SHeffield Wednesday to produce the said seminal pop classic. He
then did a stint as the stand-in vocalist for Andrew Ridgeley with
'Wham'. His talent obviously comes from the fact that his mother is
Mari Wilson (sp?) who produced that fine example of anti-materialistic
80's pseudo-ballad "Ive never been to me".

    Al,

To be honest I reckon the Grimsby game did for us.
Its a shame because to see Barnsley in the playoffs would be fabulous.
I mean, this is a team with next to nothing in terms of financial
backing and its holding its own with the 'big' clubs of the first
division with really very few outstanding players. Its all just pure
old fashioned teamwork and team spirit that keeps them going.

Theres always next season, but I think I join Danny Wilson in being
dead proud of the way theyve stuck to their task this season.

Forget Danny Wilson.....Go for Robert Runcie, Shakin Stevens & Mick
    Hucknall.
They're not getting a game at the moment, as Billy The Fish has
brought in the Three Degrees to replace them.

Is Malky Shotton still playing doing the business at Barnsley? He left
Ayr Utd a season or two ago and the club has went downhill since. If
only we could get him back to replace Stainrod, I'm sure things would
    improve drastically.

Shotton is still playing at Oakwell, I couldn't tell you how he's
doing though - since I only see them every blue moon.

Ian - couldn't agree more, it will be a shame if they don't reach the
play-offs but they have done really well this season - I think all of
Barnsley are proud of the team.

I was sad to read the news about Hucknell, and especially Shakey.
Personally, I can't see the 3 degrees making the same impact as these
    two great strikers. Pitty.

Listened in on the world service at half time, 0-0. It must have been

Once again its time to resurrect this topic after Barnsley make yet another
marvelous start to the season. Expect them to lose 5-0 in their next game.
But for now, they are top of Division 1 after hammering Reading 3-0.

Scottish U-21 Andy Liddell (I once had the dubious pleasure of having him run
rings around me on the footy pitch as he used to board at my best mates house)
scored twice and Sheridan got the other (great shot).

I was in Barnsley Saturday. Trust the team to be playing in Manchester!
