Note 86.0 Tranmere Rovers & Aldo. 2 replies
ESSB::MCUNNIFFE "It's a long time since '67" 13 lines 20-AUG-1991 16:32
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This topic is the Tranmere Rovers topic and is to be used for any
information on the team.
They started off in Div. II very well with a superb win over Brighton
at the Goldstone Ground with two superb strikes from the one and only
ALDO who had a hat-trick denied him by the woodwork on two occesions.
With ALDO spearheading the Trannie attack, then they must be among the
favourites for promotion to DIV. I.
I will submit any informaion on matches each week and the goals as
they are scored because there certainly will be an abundance of goals
with Aldo around.
rgds,
Martin

Aldo is a second-rate player, playing for a second-rate team, in the
second division, after he flopped in spain, after being sacked by
Liverpool 'cos he wasn't up to even their (low) standards. He's a
donkey, he always has been and he always will be. He only gets into the
national squad 'cos they haven't got anyone better!

Didn't think it would take toooo long for this note to appear, but
never mind I'm sure it will be an interesting topic !!??
My other half's friend was married to Eric Nixon who plays in goal for
Tranny, met him a couple of times, bit of a big-head though so didn't
stay long!!
Must admit that I'm glad that they are were they are, (because it keeps
a southern team out), and can't wait for your UN-biased opinions of the
game and tga !!!??

66.9 | Cunno is back. | ESSB::MCUNNIFFE | THE SCOUSERS TROPHY CABINET IS FULL | Wed Sep 25 1991 20:09 | 29 |
| Hi all,
It's great to be back in the notes again but they seem to be
totally messed up.
Before I forget, I must wish The Great Aldo belated birthday wishes as
he was 33 on the 18th September and is currently playing the best
football of his career having notched up his 10th goal of the season on
Saturday. I was also very pleased to hear that he had increased his
international tally with a goal against the Hungarians. I haven't yet
seen the goals but I heard reports that Sheedy has tried to claim
Aldo's goal. All I can say is that if TGA claims a goal, then he is
indeed the scorer. It's as simple as that.
I had a great holiday in Crete and during the two weeks, I had a
fantastic scoring record that even the great one would have been proud
of. Like Aldo was so successful on the continent, I too was successful
with the continentals having scored against the Dutch and Germans.
Besides having a wonderful holiday, I also made people more aware of
Aldo-ism by talking about him and wearing a tee-shirt reading on the
front TGA THE GREAT ALDO and on the back
ALDO SIMPLY THE BEST STRIKER. Many people would come up to me and ask
me what TGA meant and then I would proceed to spread the word of Aldo
to the masses, be they Greeks, Dutch, Swedish, Germans, English, Irish,
etc. So now, I can rest more easily knowing that ALDO is known about
all over Europe besides the notes conference.

But in Martins case it was a barrage of goals that lifted the roof

Newcastle were the latest team to feel the might of Aldo as they
crashed out of the Zenith Data Systems cup at Prenton Park last night.
Newcastle found themselves 5-3 down five minutes into extra-time but
fought back to lead 6-5 two minutes from the end when Micky Quinn
completed his hat-trick from the penalty spot. But deep into injury
time, Aldo not to be out shone by Quinn also completed his hat-trick
from the penalty spot.
Quinn, Lee Clark and O'Brien all failed in the penalty shoot-out for

It seems that there is no stopping THE GREAT ALDO.

"WHO'S SORRY NOW"
During the summer, Liverpool, Notts For and Spurs paid out over 7m on
Dean Saunders, Terry Sheringham and Gordon Durie but none of them can
match Aldridge's goal spree. Tranmere picked him up for a mere 275,000
and now he's worth his weight in goals. The following is how some of
the mamagers rate TGA.
"You just have to look into John eyes to see how hungry he is"-
Tranmere's John King.
"Many bosses probably underestimated what Aldridge can still do"-David
Pleat.
"John will always score goals"-Manchester city's Peter Reid.
"I'm an Aldo fan-if things had been different I'd have taken him"-
Oldham boss Joe Royle.
The sight of John Aldridge banging in the goals for Tranmere must be
enough to make some first division managers reach for a revolver to
blow their brains out. Already this season, TGA has scored 14 goals,
more than Saunders, Sheringham and Durie all together.
Next Saturday night, I am going to a testimonial dinner to honour the
greatest midfielder of the last 10 years, Ronnie Whelan and who knows,
Aldo might even be there himself.

You and I both know that Aldo is one of the greatest
strikers to grace the game and Tranny and Ireland are blessed to have
such a rare talent at their disposal. You must be aware of the fact
that Aldo has done tremendously well at every club from Newport to
Oxford to Liverpool to Real Sociedad and now Tranny and we both know
that many 1st div. managers blundered by not signing him when he became
available from Spain. Finally JC, it is you who are kidding yourself
when you fail to acknowledge what a great scorer he is.

met TGA in the Burlington hotel for Ronnie Whelan's testimonial dinner.
We spoke for a short while and I informed him of how highly he is
regarded as a striker by most people in a certain notes conference. He
is a very genuine person on top of being a great goal getter and I also
had a photograph taken of the two of us by former Liverpool great,
Steve Staunton. I have sent all the photos to get developed and am

against Chelsea? I don't remember.
Anyway, in topic 33 (Leeds) someone quotes a radio announcer as
saying Tranmere could have been 3 up at the break if they had a
finisher. That pretty much explains why TGA was not picked up by a
first division team. 6 or 7 seven goals playing in the second division
hardly qualifies anyone as a GREAT SCORER, as TGC has said many times.
The other remaning questions is: Will he ever score for Ireland?

I have just learned that the man who was responsible for bringing THE
GREAT ALDO to Oxford Utd. and who a few seasons later informed Aldo
that he was wanted by Liverpool is now feared dead. The man in question
is tycoon Robert Maxwell who is missing and feared to be drowned as he
is missing from his luxury yacht in some exotic area of the world.
Despite his vast business acquisitions and wealth, he will always be
remembered for bringing THE GREAT ALDO TO Oxford where he was chairman
and then bearing great news to the great striker that Kenny and the
Anfield reds were after him.

Cunno once again beats both BBC world service and CNN to the news that
matters - it appears true that the star of Billy the Fish and archenemy

of the U.S (CNN).
How significant that TGA's most recent strike was against one of
Big Bob's Maxwell House family of clubs.
I hereby nominate .35 for note of the year - clearly the BBC picked up
their feed from this note (:==:) and I rang CNN to let them know!!

"Robert Maxwell's home in Oxford is as imposing as the man himself.
They are both larger than life. He dominated the room when I walked
into his study for the meeting I hoped would secure my 750,000 transfer
to Liverpool. It was Maxwell who began the talking as he said to me "I
could have held out for more money but I didn't want to ruin it for
you". "You will tell no-one", he said as he glared at me in a way that
was both frightening and intimidating. He didn't have to say so , but I
knew that a leak to the mirror's main rivals could damage my move and
he was the kind of man who had the power to call my transfer off.
After the deal had been concluded, Maxwell rang Liverpool chairman
Peter Robinson and I heard him say "I want you to pay him really well
because he deserves it. He is a really good player".
He is an amazing man, Mr Maxwell. He loves football without knowing
much about the game, and has done so much for Oxford and other clubs.
He has power, money and on that Sunday morning, I knew he had my career
in his hands".

Martin,
I for one, will not lose a minutes sleep over Cap'n Bob's demise. I had
a very low opinion of him , on most counts, but his forays into the sport
that I enjoy, demonstrated that his only interest was one of self-promotion.
Maybe, in the interests of entente cordial, you should confine your

During the summer holidays of 1986, I worked in Tescos London. During
that time I worked with a friend who was from Oxford and was a fanatic
supporter. At that time also, Rushie had left the Pool and there was
all the speculation about who would take his place. I kept telling my
Oxford friend that it would be THE GREAT ALDO but he couldn't face up
to the fact of losing the lethal striker. Eventually, Aldo did leave
and little did either of us know the huge success that was to meet Aldo
at Anfield.
THE GREAT ALDO joined Liverpool in Jan 1987 and the following are
his amazing statistics::
Season 1986-87
==============
League appearances Goals
9 2
Season 1987-88
==============
League appearances Goals
36 26
FA Cup appearances Goals
6 2
League Cup app Goals
3 1
Charity shield app Goals
1 2
Season 1988-89
==============
League appearances Goals
35 21
FA Cup appearances Goals
7 6
League cup app Goals
5 2
Season 1989-90
==============
League appearances Goals
2 1 (v Palace in the 9-0 thrashing)
So, Aldo played 104 games for the Pool and notched 63 goals in the
process and yes Gary, you were absolutely correct in that quiz.
Perhaps an easier way to look at the amazing statistics::
|1986-87| |1987-88| |1988-89| |1989-90|
----------------------------------------------------------------
League app 9 36 35 2
Goals 2 26 21 1
-----------------------------------------------------------------
FA Cup app 6 7
Goals 2 6
-----------------------------------------------------------------
League C app 3 5
Goals 1 2
-----------------------------------------------------------------
C Shield app 1
Goals 2
-----------------------------------------------------------------
No matter which way one looks at it, the facts are still amazing.

Re last two notes,
It's not the first time that legendary players have got
away scott free after doing something blatant. We all remember the great
Maradona "hand of God" goal in the 1986 world cup. Other lesser players like
Best, Charlton, Law, Robson, Hughes, Ince, Bruce have also conned referees and
who will forget that challenge by Toni Schumacker on Battiston in the 1982
world cup semi-final when he wasn't even cautioned so THE GREAT ALDO isn't the
first to get away with something.

Tell that to the ref who sent Kevin Brock off, for deliberate
(allegedly) handball after 3 mins. in Newcastle's game at Derby.
Not to mention the other 2 players and Terry Mac who also went for an
early bath.

66.129 | Aldo super strike sinks Albanians. | ESSB::MCUNNIFFE | The Mancs are out of the cup | Wed May 27 1992 19:22 | 24 |
| Aldo scores against the Albanians when it needed the touch of a
genius to break the deadlock. What a superb goal it was with a lovely
weighted cross from young Keane to the deadliest striker in the game who
made all his experience tell by getting in between defender and keeper to
head the ball into the corner. If this had been Linekar, people would never
stop talking about it but I suppose we have come to expect these things
from THE GREAT ALDO. I myself wasn't at the game but rian Long was there and
he seemed to be very impressed with him saying that he never stopped running,
could have had a hat-trick and that if United want to win the league, then they
should sign him. Aldo now has scored against the Turks, Maltese, Tunizians,
Swiss and Albanians and after being top scorer in the Euro qualifier group
must be favourite to top the scoring charts for this world cup group. There
are also rumours around that Everton are interested in Aldo. He wouldn't
need to be much of a striker to be better than Mo Johnston. I also wouldn't
be surprised if Kenny made an offer for him as Kenny knows exactly what he
is capable of.
By the way, Aldo will be here in Digital Ballybrit on June 20th as a
member of a football coaching school so that's one day I'll have to put
in my diary.
P.S. I'm also in London this weekend as it is a bank holiday and I'm going

I have just taken part in a 6-a-side soccer tournament in DEC Galway.
We played three, drew three, conceeded no goals & scored no goals. For a
while I was very depressed about the whole outcome. I was also substituted
in all three games even though I played exceptionally well, holding up the
ball, astute passing, chasing lost causes to the corner flag and generally
all round intelligent play. Then I sat back and began to analyse the
situation. The greatest striker in the modern era, John Aldridge has also
suffered the same fate. Like myself a great finisher but not getting the
ball as often as he would like and how many times has he been substituted
in the green shirt after running himself into the ground, unselfish play &
after laying on several chances for teammates.
There are not many players around who understood what Aldo must have
gone through after he was called ashore during a game but after these three
games in the 6-a-side, I can sympathise with his plight. Two talented
players but no matter how good we are, we can't do much damage if we don't
get the ball supplied to us.

ball and affect the play in one way or another. It's not as if you're
standing wide on the wing, waiting for something to happen while the
far-side fullback is trying to break out. Three games and three
scoreless draws, huh? Guess you must be a real goal scoring threat.
Just curious, how many shots did you take, and how many of them were on
net? Great scorers make things happen, one way or another. It's not as
if all you have to do is wait upfield until one of your team-mates
feeds you a perfect pass...

Now for a real shock - something about Tranmere in the Tranmere note....
Friday 24th July
Tranmere 2-2 Oldham
? & ? Sharp, Henry
(wasn't Aldo)
The first outing for the Digital northern football supporters club
witnessed a truly sad event, the end of a legend. Having read so much
about 'The great dildo', a number of us from the northern CSC decided
to trek off to Prenton Park to witness 'the great one' in action. What
a shock, Aldridge was by far the worst player on the pitch, he looked
slow and clumsey and even though he was playing against a very average
defence only managed one half chance, which he fluffed badly.
Oldham settled quickly and took an early lead when Sharp showed
all his class and thundered a superb header passed Nixon in the
Tranmere goal - Aldridge should have equalised soon after, but despite
looking yards off-side, he had a free header which went well over the
bar. Tranmere stormed back and equalised after a fine run by the centre
half. Oldham regained the lead in the second half when Henry volleyed
the keeper's clearence back over his head into an empty goal. By now,
Aldridge had run out of energy and seemed happy to play the 'klinsman
role' (occasional wanders into the box and ludicrous dives if an
opponent came anywhere near him). Oldham made an inspired substitution
by introducing Neil McDonald and this lead to Tranmere's second
equaliser, some neat build-up in midfield by passed McDonald and
Milligan, resulted in a good cross which was well converted. (I didn't
buy a programme and the game wasn't on telly so I haven't a clue who
scored)
A fair result, but I think both teams will have problems next season,
Tranmere's defence and midfield looked solid, but they'll struggle with
such a poor forward line. Oldham had new signing Ian Olney partnering
Sharp up front, but Olney didn't little to justify his transfer fee.

Yes, the great one is showing his worth once again being joint top

not signing him. He will probably go on to score even more goals than he

I have been very busy all day so it has taken me quite some time
to get to the notes but here I am.
I was in Dublin yesterday to witness what I can only call a marvellous
occasion as I was one of the very privileged 30,000 plus crowd who saw
THE GREAT ALDO at his best once again. Never in my lifetime have I seen
such precision and clinical execution in front of goal.
His two headed goals were the best ever seen at Lansdowne Rd and his
penalty taking has developed into a very fine art. He is now into double
figures for Ireland and one wonders where does it all stop. He has now
netted 11 goals against the Tunizians (1), Maltese (2), Turks (3), Swiss (1)
Albania (1) and Latvia (3). The Danes and the Spaniards are in for a rude
awakening when they face the great one.
I think that it was fate that made me go to the match yesterday as I only
decided to go late on Tuesday evening. You are all probably aware of the
photo of Aldo and I taken at Ronnie's testimonial in Dublin last October,
well I going to blow up the picture and frame it and put it over my desk at
work. If I don't get inspiration from Aldo, then I never will.
It was also a great day for Ronnie and I will be paying a tribute to him
in the Liverpool note and the Man. Utd note of course.

Re last,
THE GREAT ALDO has scored league goals for every club that he has ever
played for. At Newport county, he was a prolific scorer alongside Tommy Tynan.
At Oxford, he scored countless goals alongside Billy Hamilton. He was top
scorer for Liverpool in his two seasons there. At Real Sociedad, he was also
a prolific scorer for an average team and he is doing the same thing for Tranny.
So it doesn't matter about the opposition, THE GREAT ALDO will score no matter
what.

Great to see THE GREAT ONE get the soccer award last night. It just shows

scored four goals, he is not in ALDO's league. Aldo does much more work in a
game than Van Basten, much more chasing and closing down. Anybody could score
goals if playing with AC Milan. With the amount of possession that Milan get, I
would score four goals a game myself.

Yeah, Van Basten only plays in what is universally recognized as the

Brian,
Three years ago, I made my debut for Kilkerrin Utd. in the
Roscommon league and scored a typically Aldo-like goal. Three weeks ago, I
made my debut with Renmore reserves, and believe it or not, I hit the net
again with a brilliant strike. Ask Shaughs or Mac if you don't believe me.
I also played a game since that and nearly scored. I beat the defence with
my Aldo-like anticipation and reading of the game. I was facing the keeper
but then as I was about to shoot, I slipped because half of my studs had
fallen out. Nobody ever told me that I was supposed to tighten them after
buying them.
Anyway, when I play football, I don't think about people like Van Basten. I
always base my game on Aldo and I can't go far wrong in doing that.
If Utd. had purchaded Aldo some time ago, then they might be able to score
a goal or two instead of those two plonkers they have at the moment. Even
Mike Phelan would score more than them.

There is no way that Tranny would have lost their way if THE GREAT ALDO
had been playing. Since he has been out, they have struggled badly. We often
hear that one man doesn't make a team but in this case, one man certainly
makes the team.
When Aldo was with Newport county, they did quite well. Now they are gone
from the league.
Oxford Utd. were doing very well in division one when Aldo was there. Now
they are languishing in the old third division.
Liverpool were hugely successful while they had ALDO, winning the League
and cup. Now they are struggling as well.
Real Socidad thrived while THE GREAT ONE was there. They finished very high
up in the league. As far as I know, they are struggling at the moment.
Now Tranny who were pushing for promotion right behind Newcastle are slipping
down and whose missing from the team, THE GREAT ALDO.
It just goes to prove what a sensational player this man is. Very few players
are in dispensable and ALDO is one of them.
Also it is no coincidence that Ireland's great success in recent years has
come since ALDO joined us.
I hear that Inter Milan have splashed out $12 milion on Dennis Berkhamp & Wim
Vonk. They would have spent it more wisely if they had put in a bid for the
greatest striker that the world has ever seen. I just feel that I had to
express myself and I will continue to do so.

Rumour has it that Celtic & Eire striker, Tommy Coyne (Aged 30), has
joined Tranmere for the fee of 350,000.
Can anyone confirm this (Before I go home off the nightshift & read it
in the papers for myself btw) ?

He's one of a number of players that Tranmere have been linked with
(Rosenthal of Liverpool & Garry Thompson of QPR are the others),
nothings been agreed yet (well not according to the radio). Aldridge is
out for at least another month, possible for the rest of the season.
Tranmere won their second game in a row last night - 1-0 at Brentford,
Nevin scored.

Tranny have just signed Tommy Coyne from Celtic for 450,000 to cover for
TGA who is out for the remainder of the season and to help them in their
promotion bid. Coyne will need to impress because once TGA gets fit, then it's
the bench for Coyne.

I certainly have not retired. Aldo is still my favourite player by far and is
still banging in the goals and will finish top scorer in div 1 and my
prediction is that he will finish top scorer in USA 94. Without a shadow of
a doubt, he is the best striker going to the finals so it's look out for the
Italians, Mexicans & Dutch.

I am over the moon at the moment. I have just received a TGA autographed
number 8 Tranmere jersey that the ace marksman has worn. On the front, it's
autographed by the whole Tranny team and on the back, it's signed by Aldo.
I am going to frame this and put it up in my home. I'm just over the moon at
the moment. It's the best present I have ever received. Imagine having a jersey
that has been worn by the greatest striker in the world. Well I have it. When
Aldo scores the winner for us in the world cup in July, the value of this
jersey will go through the roof.
I don't know what it is but Aldo's jersey must be having an influence on my
game at the moment but in the evenings recently, we have been playing at
home and I just can't stop scoring. Typical Aldridge play, hanging around the
box picking up the bits and pieces, meeting the ball at the far stick, Buddy
Holly's from the edge of the box, getting on to the end of things from the
ball played over the top, getting the flick-on at the near post, chasing
balls to the corner flag and creating chances for my teammates. I'm
definately playing the best football of my career and I owe it all to my Aldo
jersey. I have met the great one and now I'm wearing one of his jerseys and
terrorising defences wherever I play.
I'm just over the moon at the moment.

Martin,
I'm glad you're happy with your WALDO autographed jersey. May I suggest
that your next acquisition be the following garment...........
It's an off-white colour with long sleeves...which incidentally buckle
behind your back. I'll even get it signed by that legend, R.P McMurphy.
I'm sure Nurse Ratchet would come after you dressed in that attire.
P.S.

Yesterday I watched the Tranmere 0:0 Leicester playoff first leg.
I saw a spectacularly good display be the Leicester goalkeeper and
a spectacularly bad display from a referee who failed to give a penalty
for a blatant handball by a defender on his own goalline.
Is it fair of the F.A. to expect a totally blind referee to do two
matches in two days ?
Outraged,
Blackburn.
p.s. I bet United gave him a lift up the M1/M6 on Saturday night !
