I. Introduction
DIGITAL INTERNAL USE ONLY
The Digital computer network, known as Easynet, is a private network
for exclusive use by Digital. Computer conferences (or note files)
on various subjects exist on the network, and many are open to all
employees on the network. Conferences thus promote free exchange
of information among employees.
Not all conferences on Easynet are open to all employees. Some
conferences concern specific projects or areas of interest. It
would not be necessary or even appropriate to announce the location
of such conferences.
Some conferences contain information that is proprietary to Digital.
Such information need to be handled with particular care. Corporate
policies require that proprietary information be labeled as such.
The fact that Easynet is NOT public, and that only employees have
access to the network does not eliminate the requirement to comply
with policy.
TYPES OF CONFERENCES
1. Conferences that are open to all Digital employees and contain no
proprietary information should be announced in EASYNET_CONFERENCES.
2. Conferences that are open to all Digital employees, but contain
information that should not be distributed outside Digital, should
include the DIGITAL INTERNAL USE ONLY notice. Announce these
conferences.
3. Conferences of special interest groups are usually not announced
in EASYNET_CONFERENCES. They may be unrestricted conferences if
they contain no proprietary information.
4. Special interest conferences that contain proprietary information
should be restricted conferences, and should include the DIGITAL
INTERNAL USE ONLY notice. If these conferences are announced, only
name(s) and address(es) of moderator(s) should be given.
5. Special interest conferences that contain highly confidential material
must be restricted conferences and must NOT be announced in
EASYNET_CONFERENCES. The conferences must include a DIGITAL INTERNAL
USE ONLY, DIGITAL CONFIDENTIAL, or DIGITAL RESTRICTED DISTRIBUTION notice.
In latter case, a DO NOT DUPLICATE OR FORWARD type of notice is also
recommended.
6. DIGITAL PERSONNEL material should never appear in the types
of conferences listed above. If the Personnel department creates
any private, restricted conferences with DIGITAL PERSONNEL
data in them, they must keep them strictly private, restricted, and
unannounced.

|
Some basic conference rules.
No wagering.
No Ticket Touting.
No foul or abusive language.
Do not create a new topic unless you are sure that a similiar one does
not exist already.
Please remember that this is a worldwide conference read by many
people of different races and creeds.
Gary.

If you wish to create a topic for your club, please mail me or one of
the moderators. We would like to keep them all together.
Please don't create a topic unless you are going to occasionally use
it. (even if it's only once every couple of months). There's no point
creating a Halifax Town note just because you think it's a good idea
and you have no intention of ever entering a reply.

| Dear moderators,
There seems something is going wrong with this notesfile (or is it with
my favourite VAX ?)
First time I entered this note, I had a look at topic 3 (directory)
and saw that there was one reply for topic 10 (introduce yourself)
I decided to read that reply and found out that actually there were
17 or 18 ;
Next time I entered the notes file I got the message "no more new
notes" and there *were* new notes (at least in topic 10)
What if we can't rely on Notes system messages :-)
Desperately yours
Philippe
P.S. : JF has not
- introduced himself
- written a report on ASM-Rennes game (can understand why)
- written a report on ASM-Cannes (can't understand why)
Is JF still alive ????????

Gordon,
I think you have to be in the node that you were in when you
entered the note.
After that it's just a case of "reading" the note you want to
delete then type "DEL", it will then ask you to confirm that you want
to delete it, type "y" for yes, and the note will be gone!!
Any problems give me a shout at changeover time.

| I'm not that good at figuring out technical stuff, but here's another
way to revise your notes.
If you want to correct the information in your note, you can extract
it, edit it and re-post it. To do this, type EXT xx.xx (number of note)
and hit return. Then you can delete the note, since you already have it
on your system. Then you exit notes, and at the promt type EDIT xx.xx
(must be exact number of note). Then type C and return. You can edit
your note, and when done, type EXIT twice. Go back into notes and when
you are at the note you'd like to reply to, type REPLY xx.xx
The note you were just working on appears as a reply. You can still add
to it or change things at ths poit as well. You might want to delete
the top portion of the "notes" heading, since it will automatically
appear anyway.
Hope this helps

Subject: A message to employee interest notes file users
A MESSAGE TO EMPLOYEE INTEREST NOTES FILE USERS
Over the last few months I have received a number of complaints
from employees, and individuals outside of the company about
material communicated in electronic mail systems and posted in
various employee interest notes files. After reading some of this
material it is clear that a reminder about appropriate comment and
behavior in these systems is necessary.
First, and most critically; the electronic mail systems and notes
files are company facilities subject to normal workplace rules of
conduct. As such, the same rules that govern conduct and comment
in any other Digital workplace apply with equal weight in these
systems. Stated simply, if you wouldn't say something in a
Digital business meeting, you shouldn't say it in electronic mail
or notes. PERIOD.
Statements that attribute improper, illegal or immoral motives or
actions to others; statements that cast aspersions on the
character or integrity of others or that amount to libel or
slander are not permitted. PERIOD. In this regard, it does not
matter whether the individuals subject to the comment are elected
public officials or directors of organizations disfavored by the
author. There is no "Public Figure" exception in these systems.
Comments of a sexual nature are not acceptable whether they are
about the author or directed at others. Similarly, comments that
degrade, devalue or discriminate against others are also
prohibited.
Neither the notes conferences nor electronic mail should be used
to solicit other employees. This prohibition covers efforts to
solicit employees for personal or political gain, to sell or
market goods or services (except authorized marketplace or
discount conferences) and efforts to solicit employees to take
action, sign petitions or support particular causes or candidates.
Finally, employees should remember that it is never appropriate to
spend working time in employee interest notes for non-work
purposes. Personal or entertainment activities in these notes
files should be limited to assigned break times, lunch time and
before or after business hours.
Employee interest notes files and conferences provide an
electronic forum to share ideas and opinions about matters of
common interest. In supporting these conferences, the company
understood that there would be occasions where employees would
disagree on issues being discussed, but we believed and continue
to believe it is possible to disagree without being disagreeable.
Personnel Policy 6.54, Proper Use of Digital Computers, Systems
and Networks provides further information about appropriate
conduct and comment in these systems. Employees who fail to meet
these expectations, or who use company computer systems in ways
that are contrary to the letter or spirit of that policy are
subject to Corrective Action and Discipline up to and including
the termination of their employment.
The moderators of these conferences, along with your system
managers, personnel representatives and the Personnel Policy
Manager are all available to answer any question you might have
about appropriate use of these systems.
Please feel free to forward this memo to other Digital notes
files and conferences.

OK we're back again. The size of this file and the number of links are
causing problems.
Hopefully networking should be less of a problem now as most of the
contributors are in the UK.
As for the size, well the best way that I can see to keep the size down
is to stop the prediction topics. There are over 2,000 notes on
predictions. What I suggest is that somebody volunteer to collate the
predictions and predicitions are mailed to this person rather than
posted. He/She can then post the predicitions on Friday and the
results on Monday.

How apt it would have been - Arsenal the home of football and ARSNAL
the home of football notes.

I've received another in a long list of complaints about the language
and tone of some of the notes in this conference. A number of people
are very unhappy with these notes. The main culprits seem to be
Scottish noters.
This conference is for discussing football. It is not to be used for
insulting opposing fans or opposing teams.
Setting notes hidden does not seem to be enough. If this persists
certain people will have to be banned from this conference.
Please remember this is a public notesfile read by a large number of
people.

The other rmoderators and I have had cause to write a number of notes asking
people to calm down. This has come to a head recently with some very serious
complaints over the content of the Rangers and Celtic topics.
Due to the content of some notes we have decided to put some noters on
probabtion. One more offence and they will be banned from this conference.
We will be contacting them through mail. This sort of behaviour is not
acceptable in Digital.
We suggest that Rangers and Celtic fans stick to their own topics and stick
to discussing football. If you wish to continue the sectarian banter please
set up your own notes conference.

You two have got every right to complain! In fact, just to redress the

introductory messages that celebrate Scottish footballing heroes of the

How about this for starters:

TUESDAY: "Thanks for everything, Mr. McLeod!"

I have to disagree here. God Save the Queen is crap, (musically). I

Don't knock "God Save The Queen". At least it is within the vocal
range of the average member of the public. Which is more than can
be said for the U.S. national anthem.

true, true,
on UK TV recently they showed some celebs trying to sing the Star
Spangled Banner at sporting events and making complete arses of themselves,
there was the infamous Roseanne Barr version, and the even worse effort by
that great American Carl Lewis....he sang it in at least 3 different
keys and still couldn't make the high notes....
I prefer Roseanne's version tho, it has to be better than the total
hammering given to it by Whitney Houston et al, she takes about 10
minutes to get thru the bloody song, ie.. "the
laaaaAAAAaAaAaaaaAAAAAAaaaannnddddDDDDddd offffFFFF theeeeEEEeeeEEE
ffffffffFFFFFrrrrRRRRRRRREEEEEEEEEEEeeeeeEEEEEEe, and the
hoooooOOOOmmmmEEeEEEE offf ttthhhheeeee etc.etc."
best of all is Sinead O'Connors' version of it tho....(silence)

| All very interesting, this debate about Englaan & God Save The Queen. The only
problem is that it ISN'T the English national anthem.
It's supposed to be the BRITISH national anthem (despite the questionable bits
about crushing the rebellious Scots - which doesn't seem to have been all that
succesful !).
It annoys the arse off me to go to Wembley, have "Land of Hope and Glory" played
quietly over the tannoy as the teams walk out, then have to sing GSTQ (I don't
!).
On top of this, you see all these jerks with the Union Flag instead of the Cross
of St. George. I don't see many Scots at Hampden or Welsh at Cardiff using the
wrong flag, so why do so many of us English seem to want to use the wrong flag
and anthem. It's probably the old (and especially London based) arrogance that
England (or London) IS Britain.
Now I've got that off my chest, I'm going to have to go for a lie down in a
darkened room. Nurse, the screens.....

confuse people from other countries about the status of the various

Since you mention it, it makes no difference at all. If you're
recognized as a national entity, you should be allowed to compete in
international football.
The UK is recognized as a national entity, England/Scotland etc aren't.
It's as simple as that.

Asians or West Indians or something, you're note would have been zapped off the

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! FRIENDS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It is now time for me to say good-bye to you all.
As of February 21st, 1995, I will not be reachable through the
Digital network as I am leaving the company voluntarily.
I will be on "Garden Leave", i.e. look for a job while keeping my
Digital badge, with a work discharge.
I have not decided on the next steps apart from taking some
well-deserved vacation after 7 years at Digital.
I started as a translator in DEC-France, then moved to ISE in
Valbonne where I held several positions to culminate as Delivery
Manager-cum-Vendor Manager-cum-IDC Supervisor while retaining my
core expertise in enterprise-wide desktop publishing.
It has been a lot of fun working with you. I know I will miss most
of you. If I ever decide to keep on working in the same area I am
quite sure that we will meet again.
The FOOTBALL Conference epitomizes the fun I've had all these years.
It all started in 1987 as I discovered Notes and realized there was no
conference dedicated to the game we all love despite recent events.
And the conference grew and grew!
Thanks for all the fun.
