1157.0. "Old Fight Songs and Alma Maters" by wook.mso.dec.com::mold.ogo.dec.com::lee (Wook like "Book" with a "W") Wed Sep 27 1995 00:15

That last bit I wrote about old fight songs made me wax nostalgic for a
moment. The words to the fights song at Harvard are all so quaint in this
day and age.

For example:

Yo, ho! The good ship Harvard
  Is goalward bound again.
All the crews are at the halyards.
Give a cheer for Johnny Harvard's men!
Bright crimson at the forepeak
  Rides high above the foam
As we sweep through the deep blue.
  Harvard strikes home!

I'm not really sure why I started this topic. Maybe I'm just feeling
melancholy.

Well, we didn't really have a "fight" song at Grinnell College (in
Grinnell, Iowa), although the singing group had a couple of old songs
    that we sang.

However, we had a few great cheers that we used now and again...

    Euripidies, Eumenidies, the Pelopennisian(sp?) war!
      X-squared, Y-squared, H-2-S-O-4!
Come on gang, who're we rooting for?
      Who cares...

    Cheers (haha),

Northwestern University is well-known as an excellent business school
with a losing football team (though this season they've set a school-
record winning streak). Toward the end of their games as the inevitable
approached, the students in the stands would cheer:

    	That's all right. That's OK.
You're gonna work for *us* someday.
