| I think DOCUMENT puts the footnote reference in square brackets, with
no space after the word, if you request "line-mode" output (terminal or
mail).
e.g.
That's the way the money goes --
Pop[1] goes the weasel[2]
Footnotes:
[1] "Pop" was a term meaning "pawn."
[2] The weasel was a hatter's tool.

| You can create the superscripts in many different ways. "If it
can't be done in TECO it isn't worth doing". Your main problem is
probably that your terminal cannot display the superscripts even though
you have created them for the benefit of others.
How does , , look on your terminal. That is superscript 1, 2
and 3, created with compose key, and displayed on a VT220 terminal.
If you want to know how to create them with the hardware and
software you have then you will have to tell us more about what
hardware and software you use. If you want to display what you have
created on your own terminal then it may not be possible. Most
terminals manufactured during the last 7 or 8 years will display such
characters, though.

| >How does , , look on your terminal.
On my terminal, the portion from "does" to "ook" looks like:
d o e s space double-width-square-box space double-width-square-box
space space double-width-square-box o o k
My terminal is a JDECterm terminal emulator running on a DS5000 station.
The appearance was the same on a VT382 terminal following a 15-second
delay, and the appearance is the same on an LN03 Plus printer also
following a long delay. All of these have been manufactured during
the last 7 or 8 years. Fortunately a workstation window does it
without delay.

| If you find that "compose" key doesn't seem to work (as I did at first)
it may be that you have to press and hold "compose" followed by
pressing the space bar, then releasing both. Then type 1/2/3,etc,
followed by ^

| The question was directed at the author of the base note. I think
you know the problem with your terminal ;-) while he was asking for
assistance. My diagnosis is that you have a terminal adapted for the
Japanese character set, and I advise you to change it immediately
before you get eye problems from looking at those
double-width-square-boxes. Incidentaly, if they are double width and
also square they must also be double height.
And while we are putting on pedantic hats, my grandfather was a
schoolteacher in a British public school at the age of 16, and the
headmaster required him to wear a top hat when he addressed the class.
He thought that was a bit over the top(per) since he was only a couple
of years older than the boys he was teaching.
(I don't think the author of the base note will mind me ratholing
the topic a little since we have been exchanging more practical mail
:-)

| I have no eye problems with the double-width square boxes. I used to
be irritated with VT382 terminals, and remain irritated with LN03 Plus
printers, for delaying ages before displaying the boxes. And sometimes
I can't figure out what the characters were supposed to be. (For
example, pound sign and unknown digit, followed by readable digits.)
>Incidentaly, if they are double width and
>also square they must also be double height.
Nope. Single width would be 8x16 pixels, not square.
