1008.0. "Word at a time story" by PEKING::RANWELLJ (Good Old-Fashioned Lover Boy) Tue Oct 06 1992 04:46

    The idea is to write a story one word at a time.

    Please limit your replies to one word (if you hadn't already grasped
    that), and observe the common rules of English grammar and punctuation.

    In order to maintain a level of continuity, it would be helpful if you
    would read the replies leading up to your own. (sub-scripts can be
    added to your head-note)

    Good luck (let's see how long we can make the string, can we beat word
    association - football)

re .something near the beginning. How about allowing punctuation to be
altered, within limits. A full stop ought to be able to be mutated into
a comma or semicolon, for example.

In this note I removed the unnecessary comma after the exclamatory
quotation at the beginning of the next-to-last line.

    Re .47

    Gyre is indeed a verb - it means to move in a circle, from the Greek
    gyros, circle. It's a synonym for gyrate.

    But it's gyrfalcon, John, not gyrefalcon. The word derives ultimately
    from the Old Norse geirfalki, spear falcon, and it's clearly unrelated
    to gyre.
