| 'matricule' is the french word. 'registration number' is the
translation given by my Harrap's Mini.

| I think I remember hearing that it is 'handle'. I'm reasonably certain
that 'handle' was used in various contexts to mean what a person is
known by other than his/her real name, long before CB and BBSes.

Yes, handle has been used in that sense since at least the
restoration (it's used in one of Ford's plays).

| My sister worked in the maximum security prison in Canon City,
Colorado. She says the term for the perps (perpetrators) number is
simply "number".
The term she found oddest was "attitude", as in, "He has an attitude."
As used in the big house, it means "bad attitude"; a "good attitude"
is an oxymoron.

In California, it's not even an "attitude" anymore, it's a "'tude."
