765.0. "ise or ize ?" by UNTADH::IBRODIE (Iain Brodie, IS ADG Munich.) Mon Jan 15 1990 20:56

Ho hum, I sha'n't sleep tonight for fear of being referred to a previous
topic, but I did a 'dir /tit="ize"' and a 'dir/tit= "ise"' and nothing
    looked right; hence ...

When asked by some of the locals : 'Is "Authorize" or "Authorise"
correct English; "Organize" or "Organise", etc. ?', I'm afraid I
insisted the "ise" variant. Later, I looked in my Concise Oxford
English Dictionary and found the "ize" variants listed before the
"ise". I always thought the affinity for "z"s was American.

Is anyone able to remove some of this egg from my face; even if only
with some obscure historical explanation ? Or have I had it ?

    Thankyou, Iain.

Well, you are not alone on prefering the 'ise' instead of the 'ize'
variants ... An earlier discussion in these notes somewhere provided
me with some education on one particular 'ize' word which I hated ...
"burglarize", which from all accounts is just as valid as "burgle".

So, I think it is primarily a matter of the preference of your
educators! There are just a few where 'ize' seems better than 'ise'
though ...

As I noted in 500.20, the choice isn't always there.

That's because you mixed up the parts. tit's a bit titillating,
but the ize just don't have it. Sorry.
