673.0. "Quayle eggs anyone?" by TALLME::FRIDAY (Patience averts the severe decree) Thu May 25 1989 00:27

Our vice president seems to be saying things that might be
suitable material for this notes file. How about it?
anyone out there want to contribute Quayle eggs?

Several weeks ago Dear Danforth was in some poverty-stricken place
and commented to a large crowd, "You all look like happy campers
to me!"

Just how healthy *is* George Bush?

The AP newswire carried a story about D.Q. trying to repeat
the line used for Black US colleges -- "A mind is a terrible
    thing to waste."

Well, he tellingly mangled the line to be (approximately):
"It's terrible to not have a mind."!

Someone somewhere may find it re-assuring that in the UK we'd almost
forgotten that the US has got a VP.

And until reading 673.0 I'd forgotten his name.

Must be great to be such a high profile and memorable international
    statesman.

A story in the Guardian diary a couple of days ago (they were good
enough to concede that it may be apocryphal, but a real diarist never
lets the truth get in the way of a good story). Mr Q was making a
speech somewhere in Latin America, and began by apologising for being
unable to speak the language - they didn't teach Latin at his school.

I'd put a big fence around Kennebunkport now, if I were you.

I think this is the fourth place I've seen this story posted. Somebody
claimed it was a joke written by Q's own staff. Perhaps we should start
a topic concerning the gullibility of those who dislike Quayle.
673.6chapter and verseCOOKIE::DEVINEBob Devine, CXNThu Jun 15 1989 21:2021
Last night on US's National Public Radio there was an interview
of one of the co-authors of a book about famous quotes that
    never were spoken.

Some names and quotes I remember:

Dan Quayle's "I wish I had studied Latin..." quote was stated to
be the fabrication of some comic though the convolution of "A
brain is a terrible thing to waste" was true (NPR even played
    a tape of his gaffe).

Churchill's "blood, sweat and tears" was considered an improvement
on what he really said: (approx) "We have nothing to offer but
blood and guts, tears and sweat".

Many of the quotes attributed to the Hollywood mogul Sam Goldwyn
were in fact creations of the studio's publication department.
Sad to say, but, such gems as "Gentleman, count me out" and
"the film was so bad it made the hair on my teeth stand on edge"
were bogus. The author said there was a running contest for
the best Goldwynism every day -- ten bucks to the winner.

I think it's blood, toil, tears, and sweat.

Nah, he's dumb but his spelling isn't *that* bad.

Your American president of vice Dann'l Quayle reminds me of the
most interesting excuse ever given to me by a customer for not working
    on his equipment.

I had been sent from Reading to Leicester to install an option on
a Laboratory PDP8E in the mid 1970's and the dear Doctor Wiedemann
(spelling uncertain) asked me to come back in an hour as he'd...

"just got the Quayle used to the dark!"

Could it be the same Quayle?

Well, Our Boy is still at it.
This month, while recounting the 20th anniversary of the First Moon Landing he
called on the crowd to "Remember those three famous Americans- Neal Armstrong,
Michael Collins,and Buzz Lukens...

(Buzz Aldrin was the astronaut. Donald R.'Buz' Lukens is the Republican
Congressman now under investigation for fooling around with a teenage girl).

Re .8: I think that "include me out" is uttered by
Bertie Wooster in one of P.J. Wodehouse's books,
perhaps "Stiff upper lip, Jeeves"

As stated in .8, "Include me out" is first attributed to Goldwyn.

I think it more than possible that Bertie Wooster was supposedly
quoting Goldwyn, courtesy of P.G. Wodehouse -- who did a lot of
    writing in and for Hollywood.

    You missed my '89 favorite:

In an August 11 interview on Cable Network News, the head of the
National Space Council, Vice President Dan Quayle, explained why the US
should undertake a manned mission to Mars: "Mars is essentially in the
same orbit. Mars is somewhat the same distance from the sun, which is
very important. We have seen pictures where there are canals, we
believe, and water. If there is water, there is oxygen. If oxygen,
    that means we can breathe."
